Do you associate this name with anything?

I'm assuming MN represents a decent cross section and me and DH have different views on a name, he thinks too many people will associate it but I think the reference is old and niche enough now that it isn't a problem for most people.

It's for DC2, sec unknown, if it's a girl I've suggested (and love) Inara

Inara is lovely and it would be on my list but the Firefly reference puts me off.

@CreatedBySombra he needs better reasons to veto a lot of the suggestions so far. One was shot down because he knew of a cat named similar or another was an but summery for a winter baby'.

I thought naming a second would be easier!

Inaya is also lovely. I think it’s Arabic and means grace.

Honestly, it sounds like a car. Vauxhall Inara. It's so not pretty!

If anyone flinches at Inara because she was a "space prostitute" of a niche kind of fame then you also need to clutch your pearls at such names as:
Josephine (Wyatt Earp famously had an affair with her)
Iris (Taxi Driver)
Lynn (LA Confidential)
Nancy (Oliver)
Belle (Gone with the wind)

I know women with all of those names and none of them have sold their body for sex despite the famous connections.

With all due respect codenameduchess your husband needs a more powerful veto than "space prostitute". If he doesn't like the name he just needs to say so rather than hiding behind a flimsy excuse.

Inara, in Hittite–Hurrian mythology, was the goddess of the wild animals of the steppe and daughter of the Storm-god Teshub/Tarhunt.

I found that after googling so now you know :-) (if someone else hasn't already said).

I can't say I am enamoured of the name but it's up to you.

If there’s nothing wrong with Magdalena or Vivian, there’s nothing wrong with Inara for the same reason.

And naming people after sci-fi is fine. Lots of Leias out there. Plus, she was a cool character.

@EileenAlanna I've not looked it up, but I love that and Artemis was another name I'd liked so the connection is fab!

I hadn't heard it before but I think it sounds lovely. This came up on Google

I think it's a gorgeous name... I also immediately thought of Firefly though. If that bothers you, how about going for something with a similar sound, maybe something like Amara or Elena? Smile
