Quite like the sound of it, but is it too surname-y? Does Ramsay Bolton in GoT ruin this name?

OP posts:

My first thought was Ramsay Bolton followed immediately by Neighbours!

I don't dislike it, and I don't think GOT will be a problem in a few years, but Im not particularly keen on it either.

I think it's fine, as long as you dont have a namey surname. So, Ramsey Ross is likely to be called Ross , and Ramsey Henry would get called Henry. But Ramsey White is likely to be called by the correct name.

I would definitely spell it Ramsay not Ramsey, but yes, it's totally fine. Especially if you vote Labour.

I like it, never met a Ramsay but it's not that out there either. I did instantly think of GOT though.

Not uncommon in Scotland, I know a few Ramsays/Ramseys ... same vibe as Cameron, Fraser, etc. in my view

isabellerossignol · 20/10/2019 10:38

Although I should add I'm in rural N Ireland where the 'mother's maiden name as the name for the firstborn son' is very common. So I know loads of men with names like Thompson, Jackson, Ferguson, Miller etc

TheFatberg · 20/10/2019 10:38

I think it's fine - guaranteed one person you know will have a connection to whatever name you pick. Go for it!

isabellerossignol · 20/10/2019 10:37

I've known men called Ramsey, doesn't seem unusual to me.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 20/10/2019 10:37

I know a Ramsay in his 60s, it is an unusual but distinguished name. Haven't heard of any baby Ramsays though.

MoonlightBonnet · 20/10/2019 10:35

I think of Ramsay McDonald before Ramsay Bolton. Which may not be ideal either unless you have very specific politics. Also Ramsay street.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 20/10/2019 10:10

It’s a nice name ruined by GoT.

In five years though GoT won’t be as popular, and it helps that Ramsey is a actual name and not a made up word like Khaleesi.

MollyButton · 20/10/2019 10:05

The only one I can think of is Ramsey MacDonald - it makes me think Scottish Island first, and then the street in Neighbours.
I've never met one.

hungryhippie · 20/10/2019 10:05

Definitely too surnamey!
Reminds me of the TV programme, Neighbours.
