One of my best friends growing up is Shireen so I like it.

I don’t watch GOT so had no idea it was in that.

GeorgianaDovesHouse · 23/10/2019 13:46

It reminds me of Sharon which I don’t like. The “een” ending is a bit old fashioned. Not influenced by GoT because I have not watched it ever.

feelingverylazytoday · 23/10/2019 12:50

I think it's very pretty, but obviously wouldn't use it in an area where it's associated with a woman's privates. That would be unkind. As for GOT, I like some of those names, the association wouldn't bother me.

Namechange765 · 23/10/2019 12:16

It's my name. It's a beautiful Persian name meaning sweet in Farsi. These idiots talking about GoT and saying it's made up are just bloody ignorant.

SpinneyHill · 23/10/2019 11:02

*There is One Fan on my facebook -that should say

SpinneyHill · 23/10/2019 11:01

I've not seen GOT (tried to watch several but it's boring) , but I'm not convinced people will remember names from it in Ten years. There's 1 fan on my Facebook and lot's of "I've seen a few" fans they usually mention tits and shagging.

Shireens lovely I was at school with a shireen she was frighteningly clever and very good at sports, deputy head girl, invited to every birthday but couldn't afford to go to all of them and was really honest about how skint her family was.

A side note - Her brother was the sort of hot that could have caused a lot of trouble, had he not been completely obsessed with Cricket and Football with ZERO interest in any of us.

givememarmite · 23/10/2019 08:59

We had this on our list but spelt Shirin (DH is Afghan and it was his grandmother's name) but I actually found it a bit too sweet and not quite strong enough.

Do you have any other favorites?

I've been trying to think of some names that might sound similar if it's the sound you like...

Zareen
Roshni
Soraya
Shahin
Sahar
Sanaz

PS we watched GoT but it never even occurred to me to link it to that character!

Starryskiesinthesky · 23/10/2019 08:06

Haha not sure why I didn’t work that out!!! Was thinking too much of Shereen 🤪

ArtificialArctophile · 23/10/2019 07:01

@Starryskiesinthesky

Shireen? What do you think?
ArtificialArctophile · 23/10/2019 06:59

@Starryskiesinthesky what does Jim Delahunt rhyme with? A part of the female anatomy... 😉

Starryskiesinthesky · 23/10/2019 06:50

@ArtificialArctophile come on! what was it?!

Oblomov19 · 23/10/2019 06:42

I knew one at uni, but it was spelt with an 'e' not an 'i' and it was much softer.
Now with GoT, I think it's probably not as good.

DeeAndMe · 23/10/2019 06:30

I know a Cherin, it's a lovely and very feminine name. It is also used in the Arabic world.
Not everyone has seen Game of Thrones, putting the name in the thread title will have attracted the posters who have seen it so the answers you are getting are skewed.
In any case, no one will be talking about Game of Thrones in the future.

sashh · 23/10/2019 06:23

Back n the 1990s I worked with a Dr called Shireen. She was smart, funny, down to earth and had the broadest Manchester accent ever. I can only think good things about the name.

ArtificialArctophile · 23/10/2019 06:21

@Starryskiesinthesky
Shereen Nanjiani's fellow news reader Jim Delahunt created a similarly amusing which appeals to my very immature sense of humour rhyming slang phrase for the same body area 😃

Starryskiesinthesky · 23/10/2019 06:11

@rooftops

Shireen? What do you think?
BellaBattenburg · 23/10/2019 06:08

Never seen Game of Thrones but, to me, it is a mix of Doreen and Shirley- 2 very old fashioned names.

Starryskiesinthesky · 23/10/2019 06:07

From Edinburgh and I know it as rhyming slang for fanny!

HeadlessGummyBears · 23/10/2019 06:03

Almost all the Shireens that I’ve come across have been Egyptian, Persian and Pakistani bar one who was Afro-Caribbean called Chereene but pronounced as “Shireen”. I think it’s a nice name. I also like Serena which has the similar feel as Shireen.

VashtaNerada · 23/10/2019 05:45

Immediately thought of GoT Sad Lovely character but awful ending for her! Betrayed by her parents and killed horribly...

AdalindMeisner · 23/10/2019 05:43

Should have said I like it, beautiful name.

AdalindMeisner · 23/10/2019 05:40

I knew a shireen once, a long time ago. Never heard the name since (30 years or so ago!) don't watch GoT so would T have associated it with that.

pollywobble · 23/10/2019 05:22

Horrid, especially when said with an Aussie accent-which it is screaming out for...

GeorgiaGirl52 · 23/10/2019 04:27

Like you squashed Shirley and Noreen together.

Pemba · 23/10/2019 03:47

Wow, people are being so narrow-minded on this thread.

It's a real name, just from a different culture. Has a nice sound. Also, not everything is about GoT, the name predates the character.
