I feel differently to you as it's a family name that has been well used in the past and now is popping up in the most recent generations.

Also interestingly I have met 3 other child Teddys in the last few years. So yes It is making a comeback in my experience.

I think the stats of 'rising' names will also bear that out.

On this thread a pp mentions she has an older relative ( female) who is named Teddy ( from Theodora? ) . I agree that unusual.

Sorry to be pedantic, but 'come back' is not the right phrase, if you're using it in relation to a girl.

It has nothing to 'come back' from, since it's never been a girls' name.

It would only be appropriate to use it for a boy. And even then it's not correct, as it's never been a particularly popular name for boys, such that it appeared, waned, and then 'came back'! It's been consistently in the background since it came into use.

I agree it should be in combo with a longer BC name like Theodora. Luckily it takes all types.

It hardly qualifies as a 'come back', if it's for a girl. Grin

Honestly - would any of you want it for your own name, and with no actual decent name as a back-up? And if you say yes, I simply don't believe you, because no self-respecting woman wants to be named after a toy (at best), or an item of lingerie (at worst).

Except hardly anyone will even think of the latter two people. Not exactly household names, are they?

The point was that people's first association with Teddy is a Teddy Bear rather than these people!!

Unisex just means it's a boy's name doesn't it? How is having a cutesy toddler boy's nickname helpful for a girl?

Have any of the unisex name advocates hot unisex names themselves? I have, and it has been anything but helpful.

I like it. It's cute and unisex, which I think is always helpful for a girl. So long as she has a grown up name too, so she can change to Thea or Dora or Eddie etc if she wants to as she gets older. (Theadora is lovely. Or Edina/Edwina if you have to.)

If it’s short for Theodora then fine, otherwise no. I hate diminutives being used as first names, my Mum did this with me and I changed my name by deed poll to the full name as soon as I could.

Def bit more unusual for girls though.

I read a story about a girl called teddy. Her mummy had made her a birthday cake using made cakes from the supermarket ( stuck together with icing 🤭) both cake and name were absolutely ridiculed.

We think of Teddy as a baby name as the average age of the population called Teddy must be about 1 years old. That’ll change as all these Teddy’s grow up

I love this! I can’t imagine she’d be a laughing stock, names don’t have to just be traditional to be pretty.

Theodora nn Teddy is fine. Teddy on it’s own is not.

I think that of Teddy as a stand-alone for boys too.
