Our eldest dd is an Elsie, we are due 2nd dd in Feb. I really like the name Eliza, but not sure if it's too much like Elsie??

If you love the name, then go for it. It's not as though it's going to be a surprise to you one day that they both begin with the same letter.

Spoken they sound fairly different.

MrsBertBibby · 19/10/2019 07:56

Far too alike.

I think you need to go back to the drawing board.

raskolnikova · 18/10/2019 21:25

And the sibilant is in the 3rd syllable in Eliza and the 2nd in Elsie, and the sibilants aren't the same either.

I think it's weirder because they are both from the name Elizabeth, rather than the actual sounds, which are different.

raskolnikova · 18/10/2019 21:13

Yes, aside from being popular 2-syllable, 5-letter girls' names that belong to the current trend for old lady names, beginning with the exact same syllable

Eliza is 3 syllables and Elsie is 2. They also have different first syllables - Eliza's is 'E' and Elsie's is 'El'.

But that aside I agree, they are too similar.

yellowallpaper · 18/10/2019 20:17

Mabel? Similar era and not alike.

IVflytrap · 18/10/2019 20:16

Yes, aside from being popular 2-syllable, 5-letter girls' names that belong to the current trend for old lady names, beginning with the exact same syllable and followed by a sibiliant and vowel sound in the second syllable, liable to the same shortenings by friends ("Alright, El?"), and being derived from the exact same longer name, they are absolutely nothing like each other.

RuthW · 18/10/2019 19:53

Nothing like each other. It's fine.

SemperIdem · 18/10/2019 18:08

Way too similar Confused

june2007 · 18/10/2019 18:06

Well since there both deriditives of Elizabeth ofcourse there to similar.

NoSauce · 18/10/2019 18:00

Bit unimaginative.

MissHenty · 18/10/2019 16:29

But I’ve already said I actually think it’s fine to use both Elsie and Eliza

MissHenty · 18/10/2019 16:29

Yes how about Edith (Eddie)

mistermagpie · 18/10/2019 16:10

I'm debating whether Fergus is too similar to Magnus at the minute so I know how you feel. My gut feeling is that they are too close and people might think it's weird, I can see why you like both names though but I'd try and think of something else. I like Eliza and Edith, maybe something like that?

december20100 · 18/10/2019 14:53

They are quite similar, but if you like it just go for it.

MarthasGinYard · 14/10/2019 08:07

Sounds like you've zero time imagination and far to alike

Grumpymcgrumperson · 14/10/2019 08:04

And who cares if they both come from Elizabeth? Neither child is called Elizabeth so what’s the problem? Mumsnet is so weird sometimes. If anything I think that’s quite a sweet link between the two names!

Grumpymcgrumperson · 14/10/2019 08:01

I think they sound lovely together!

RonaldMcDonald · 14/10/2019 03:39

Is it for a run in a Dickensian play on the West End?

Astronica · 14/10/2019 03:33

The problem is not that they are similar soundwise - if that was the case you could get away with it - but that they are both variations of the same name. Perhaps use Eliza as a middle name?

071019DD · 13/10/2019 22:08

I'm in the minority it seems but I'd have an Elsie and Eliza!

MillicentMartha · 13/10/2019 22:02

I know an Elsie and a Betsy sisters which I thought was rather odd, both versions of Elizabeth. Confused. Your two names are much too close.

peachypetite · 13/10/2019 21:17

Far too similar

Mamasaurus82 · 13/10/2019 21:12

Sorry OP, I agree with others that they're a bit too similar. Hope you find another name you like

MissHenty · 13/10/2019 21:04

Well I’m going out on a limb but I don’t think they’re too similar @rufus86 - I didn’t know they were both derivatives of Elizabeth - who cares though they’re different names and sound different

daisypond · 13/10/2019 19:25

They’re the same name, effectively.
