No it’s not. (Honestly what is wrong with people?)

ThinkingIsAllowed · 06/10/2019 14:29

Yes it is, sorry

calmalamadown · 05/10/2019 22:28

The only one I can think of is the chap that was married to Amy Winehouse, it wouldn't rank high on my list.

If I heard it used I'd assume it was the person's surname they were being referred to by.

hopingformoremoremore · 05/10/2019 21:53

I think American sounding names can sound chavy. However I've only met one Blake and his mum seemed posh-ish. I actually though "oh that's nice" when I heard it as is unusual. So I'm on the fence.

InTheTempest · 05/10/2019 20:34

Straight away I thought of Blake Fielder-Civil. The associations with him alone would put me off...

Grammar · 05/10/2019 20:16

Personally, I don't like it, but chavvy?
What about Blake Morrison, poet and author?

Definition of chav
British slang, disparaging
: a young person in Britain of a type stereotypically known for engaging in aggressively loutish behavior especially when in groups and for wearing flashy jewelry and athletic casual clothing (such as tracksuits and baseball caps)

cushioncovers · 05/10/2019 20:14

I cAnt say that name without saying it the way Key and Peele say it in their teacher skit. Grin

cornstarch · 05/10/2019 20:10

No

joystir59 · 05/10/2019 20:09

What is a chav?

EdWinchester · 05/10/2019 20:09

Yes, it is.

daisypond · 05/10/2019 20:07

Chav is not an acronym of “council house and violent”! Where do people get that idea from? It is probably derived from a Romani word meaning “child”.

Cbeebiesrehab · 05/10/2019 17:56

AMA chav is literally an acronym of ‘council house and violent’

AMAM8916 · 05/10/2019 14:43

Oh and brash... check again to a lot of MN's members. Maybe not as middle class as you all thought 🤭

AMAM8916 · 05/10/2019 14:41

The word chav actually means a young person that is loud. Nothing to do with council estates.

Using the correct term, there's far too many chavs on MN's. Loud and outspoken little chavs!

Mrsjayy · 05/10/2019 11:48

I only know 1 Blake he is primary age just a normal little boy from an ordinary family it is a fine name , but heyho we would rather die than be associated with chavvy names

pinkribbons · 05/10/2019 11:43

Yes a very derogatory word which means different things to different people too.

fairybeagle · 05/10/2019 11:30

Oh get off your high horses it's just a word 🙄

Thanks for all the replies, it seems that yes, overwhelmingly seen as so. I wasn't sure how much I liked it anyway, and it was a definite no from DH as he sees it as a surname only.

Anyone who looks down on someone else because of their name, or social circumstances, is stuck up, nasty and judgemental. Calling someone a chav because they are lower than you is inexcusable

preach @Itsreallymehonest!

pretty much call your kids whatever, they are stuck with you as a grim role model

peppinanna · 05/10/2019 09:15

I don't think it is. The one I know certainly isn't

CeeceeBloomingdale · 05/10/2019 07:50

It's a surname to me, used as a first name it sounds American. I'm not a fan and wouldn't use it. It's better on a boy than a girl imo.

Manicpixiedreambitch · 05/10/2019 07:47

It’s a certain ‘type’ of name that goes with Taylor and Lily-Mae. Not a bad thing, but not to my taste.

Ohmygod123 · 05/10/2019 07:25

What? No! Not in Wales. I guess it depends where you are living to make it chavvy. Definitely not chavvy here
