I like the name a lot and I don't think it's common for young children anymore. Opinions please?

it won't go away completely. Like Sarah and other names, it was so popular that it appeared dated.
The modern world has opened the range of names we hear about. Before tv, internet and so on we just wouldn't have known of a lot of the nmaes.

FizzyGreenWater · 07/10/2019 11:14

Oh really? Well you learn something new every day. Odd because I was only thinking a day or two before reading this thread that I'd noticed John popping up as a name choice! There you go OP looks as if it's more likely to stay a rare one.

MissHenty · 07/10/2019 10:03

@FizzyGreenWater look at the ONS stats! It’s definitely not on its way back. It’s on its way out! A shame because it’s nice...

I think it’s classy and understated.

misspiggy19 · 07/10/2019 09:29

So, so boring

Phoebesfleas · 07/10/2019 09:27

I have a friend with a DS called John, they felt it was too grown up for a baby so they call him Johnny.

Dljlr · 07/10/2019 09:25

It's my DSs middle name because it's a family name and I do love it.

FizzyGreenWater · 07/10/2019 09:23

Be warned, it's on the way back! I know two babies called John.

It's going to be part of the next wave of comeback names replacing (at a guess) the Stanley and Wilfred type names.

Next up will be John, Peter, Robert.

It's never going to be two a penny like Oliver though so I'd go for it. It's nice.

OtraCosaMariposa · 07/10/2019 08:48

There are a couple of kids called John and Jonathan at our school.

Brilliant name. Just don't double barrel it with Thomas.

BillyAndTheSillies · 07/10/2019 08:47

DS's best friend at preschool is John.

fairybeagle · 07/10/2019 08:35

Lovely positive replies! I really like the name, still not 100%. It would definitely be John rather than Jonathan (not keen on Jonathan/Jon/Johnny).

So boring.

autumnkate · 06/10/2019 23:25

Much prefer John to Jonathan (which is a bit wet in my opinion)

Igotthemheavyboobs · 05/10/2019 22:02

I like John nn Jonno

drumandthebass · 05/10/2019 11:27

Terrible idea

paperandfireworks · 05/10/2019 10:28

Perfect.

Clownfish123 · 05/10/2019 10:19

I love the name John (especially nn Johnny) I think it's a bit ubiquitous for 30+ men but would be refreshing on a child, but not old fashioned or 'dated' because its such a classic.

MissHenty · 05/10/2019 09:33

Does anyone else think Jonny sounds rude? Like rubber Jonny? ... just me!

Anyway like the name

Wanderingraspberry · 05/10/2019 09:31

There's a Johnny in DC1s class, yr6 and a John in DC2s class yr4. I like it.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 05/10/2019 09:22

It’s my sons middle name. I love it.

PrincessLouis · 05/10/2019 09:20

100% love! Wanted to call DS this but vetoed by DH. Johnny is an ace nn. John is much much much nicer than Jonathan or, shudder, Jon. To the pp who said there has never been an interesting John, may I respectfully suggest John Lennon, JFK, King John, John McEnroe, John the Baptist...

userabcname · 05/10/2019 09:07

I'm a teacher and wouldn't say it's that unusual but not common either - there's always a handful of Johns/Johnnys in each year group I'd say (big school). I'm secondary though so perhaps it's less popular among little ones now.

Jellycat00 · 05/10/2019 08:50

I absolutely love it!!! My DH wouldn't agree to John, but we did agree on Jonathan (which i do love too), but we ended up with a girl.
I have come across a Johnny (now aged 7) and a Jonathan (2years old) and know theres a John in my nephew's class (age 5)

TheApprentice · 05/10/2019 08:35

I have certainly met some interesting John's in my time!

My ds (12yrs) is Jonathan, Jonny for short but I really like John too.

PillowLid · 05/10/2019 07:37

Hate that name. So dull. Have you ever met an interesting John?
