Can I use the same middle names for both daughters?!

Hi,

My first daughters middle name is after my mum, she passed away when I was a teenager, I've been wondering would it be strange for my second daughter to have the same middle name to?! Has anyone else ever done this?

Obviously the name does mean a lot to me because it was my mums name but I also just love the name.

Thank you in advance!!

I would be more inclined to use a similar name instead. In this case I would go for something flower related so it still holds meaning..... Blossom, dahlia, iris... That kind of thing

damekindness · 02/10/2019 09:57

My sister and I were given the same middle name and it's lovely to have that link. Particularly for girls who might change surname when married - it feels good to share something in our names

NataliaOsipova · 02/10/2019 09:53

I thought about doing this (for similar reasons) and decided against it. I’m glad I didn’t; you find that middle names are used for kids more than you might expect and I think it’s nice that each child has her “own” name.

KUGA · 02/10/2019 09:52

Sounds nice tbh.
How lovely.

Joeybee · 02/10/2019 09:48

I think it's kind of nice for siblings to share a middle name. Tbh it's not often that anyone has to say their middle name, it doesn't really matter what the middle name is. You're picking something that means a lot to you and that's important. I say go with it.

Proseccoinamug · 02/10/2019 09:46

Nothing wrong with using the same middle name.
Flora and May are also lovely.

As another thought, what about the name of their other grandmother?

Blackopal · 02/10/2019 09:38

My children have the same middle name for sentimental family reasons.
I wasn't sure if it was a bit strange but they are older and like it. Apart from that it just never comes up, it's fine.

Bishbosh84 · 02/10/2019 09:36

I think it’s fine.
I have three girls. The name of my eldest girl is the middle name of my two younger girls. I love the name so used it three times!

RuthW · 02/10/2019 09:34

It's fine. No problem

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 02/10/2019 08:56

I think maybe a floral first name and may as a middle name would be lovely, did your mum have a favourite flower? Eg if it was roses you could have Rosa May. Alternatively if you really want to use fleur maybe have two middle names this time Olivia jayne fleur for example.
I think it's lovely idea 😊

HoHoHolyCow · 01/10/2019 22:13

My DC both have the same middle name (My maiden name)

Sewingbea · 01/10/2019 22:12

I think it's fine. My Dad, his brother and two sisters all have the same middle name. Nobody will ever know anyway, all you ever really see of middle names is initials on letters.

Allgirlskidsanddogs · 01/10/2019 22:08

My Granny didn’t have a middle name but she gave my Mum one. My Mum gave me the same middle name, my daughter also had the same middle name and it didn’t feel right not to give it to my second daughter as well. My daughters have different first initials and so a middle name in common won’t cause confusion. I would love it if they use the same name if they are lucky enough to have a daughter, but I wouldn’t be devastated if they didn’t.
Personally I like a middle name, but I prefer one chosen for a reason other than just liking it. Meaning, symbolism, family connections all make a middle name more important and that’s what a middle name is about for me.

daisydalrymple · 01/10/2019 22:06

I think it would be lovely for them both to have the same middle name, especially for such a lovely reason. Coming at it from your daughters’ points of view in the future, given you will Likely be telling them all about your mum, it may be more equal for them to feel they both share her name.

Fuiseog · 01/10/2019 21:54

Some lovely ideas here already, as well as the option to use Fleur again. What about looking into what flowers are associated with her birth month and if any of them would be a nice middle name?

CareBlair · 01/10/2019 21:53

I'm not a particular fan of it, but know a few people who have done this and is not uncommon. I can see why people like the idea especially if children have different surnames it can bond them.

Starrgreen72 · 01/10/2019 21:10

Yeah course you can , do want you like because if you didn’t do it then someone in school had two kids with the same middle names you’d of wished you did it

Alicenwonderland · 01/10/2019 20:14

In Cyprus your middle name is just your father's first name initial so if your husband was called Bob all the kids would have a B as a middle name.

bellalou1234 · 01/10/2019 20:06

I think its lovely

gubbsywubbsy · 01/10/2019 20:05

Both my kids have the same middle name because it means something to us and I like the way the initials flow .. we all have the same Middle initial .. middle names are kind of pointless aren't they anyways

sheshootssheimplores · 01/10/2019 20:01

I have two children with the same middle name (my surname).

PaxtonsCrown · 01/10/2019 19:54

I think May is lovely, as would be a similar name to Fleur. However I see nothing wrong with giving both girls the same middle name. They may both or either change their surname at some point in their lives and the middle name gives them a link lasting a lifetime and maybe even on to the next generation again as there is such an emotional family story to the name.

Ohhgreat · 01/10/2019 19:51

Love the idea of May and Flora - would two middle names work with the first name you've chosen?

Cakeandmarshmallows · 01/10/2019 19:32

My husband is one of 6, they all have theit father's first name as their middle name. My son's middle name is his father's first name, seen as traditional and honouring the family. If that's what you to do, then go for it!

LoobyLou2709 · 01/10/2019 19:31

I think May as a middle name would be lovey! Something a bit different from your other Daughter but still has a lovely meaning to you, x
