I love both - Slight away towards Athena because of the Venessa in Gavin and Stacey Grin

Which do you like best?

Athena. There’s one in my DD’s class and I love it every time I hear it.

AlliKaneErikson · 26/09/2019 10:00

I prefer Athena. I don’t mind Vanessa (I also know a Venissa) but it’s a name I associate with an older age group (I don’t know why, as DS has a Vanessa in her class!).

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 25/09/2019 10:53

Vanessa is lovely, imho. I haven't met a Vanessa for years, and I think most people think of Ness or Nessa being G&S, not Vanessa...

Athena, to me, sounds pretentious and try hard if you don't have a family/cultural reason for using it...

VenusClapTrap · 25/09/2019 10:47

Not keen on either.

How about Venetia? You don’t hear that very often these days and it’s a bit more elegant than Vanessa.

MikeUniformMike · 25/09/2019 09:53

Vanessa. nn Ness.
Athena is nice too,

FizzyGreenWater · 25/09/2019 09:47

Vanessa. Athena is 80s posters to me. I've always loved Vanessa for some reason and I reckon it's due a comeback.

ELmi9876 · 25/09/2019 08:20

Vanessa

Moominfan · 25/09/2019 08:16

Athena is a lovely name. Although she was a really shitty god towards women and only ever helped men out.

AutumnalLeaves38 · 25/09/2019 08:07

Love Vanessa, nn Nessa. Hear it loads here in Wales.

"Oh!...What's occurrin'?" Grin

OP, Vanessa is quite nice, but Athena is unusual, strong due to 'wisdom and courage' Goddess link, so gets my vote.

userabcname · 25/09/2019 07:38

I love the name Athena. I don't like Vanessa - sounds quite dated to me.

Grammar · 25/09/2019 07:22

I love Vanessa, but then I have two close friends called and a good acquaintance.
Athena, as PP have said reminds me of the poster shop and, to me, is a bit "trying too hard".
But then, I'm a fairly traditional girl

Freedd · 25/09/2019 07:17

Athena is posters. Vanessa is v dated and NN Nessa sounds like Loch Ness Monster. Sorry.

painauchocolat84 · 25/09/2019 07:12

I love Athena! Of course you don’t have to be Greek to use it, ridiculous 🙄

Astronica · 25/09/2019 03:16

I prefer Vanessa, and like Ness for short form.

raskolnikova · 25/09/2019 00:02

Athena!

I don't see why you should only be able to use it if you're Greek Confused. And I'm too young to remember the poster shop.

123Dancewithme · 24/09/2019 22:21

Athena

OpiesOldLady · 24/09/2019 21:34

Love Vanessa, nn Nessa. Hear it loads here in Wales.

daisypond · 24/09/2019 21:29

I like both of them. Vanessa is great and I like Athena a lot. I know a young one with one Greek parent but I don’t think you need to be Greek.

user1493494961 · 24/09/2019 21:27

Not that keen on either but prefer Athena.

Oneforposy7 · 24/09/2019 21:09

Athena!
I hear Vanessa. I think Feltz.

villainousbroodmare · 24/09/2019 21:06

I like Vanessa and prefer it to Athena.

MissHenty · 24/09/2019 21:04

Sorry I really don’tike either and I usually like uncommon names

diddlediddle · 24/09/2019 21:00

😅 if you can't spell it I'd go for the other one! Athena is nicer anyway

Yeahsurewhatever · 24/09/2019 20:59

Love Athena but it's like you're trying a bit hard if you're not greek.
I'm not keen on Vanessa at all.
