Do you ever see your unusual baby name?

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 22/09/2019 19:46

Just that really - on unusual names threads, if you gave your DC an unusual name, do you ever see it?

I’ve only come across one of my DC’s names once (it was a complimentary comment!)

Ooh and also while I’m here - when you chose an unusual name, did you do so to be different (in the hope there wouldn’t be many) or because you just liked it because it was different? My three have very unusual names - I think they all hover around the 3500th mark - but we didn’t choose to be different. We just liked the names in their own right. That being said...there is a part of me that doesn’t want to share what they are, just in case Grin

I'm assuming sum has a Balonz…

Haha, no. Not a joke to quite that extent Wink

DS1 has an unusual name (4 babies named in his year of birth, and has remained low since, though last year it was 8 babies so that's doubled!). It's an historical name, so it's well-known to people but often only through literature/history rather than knowing people with that name. It sometimes gets mentioned on here as an unusual name, but it's also been mentioned as one that posters weren't 'brave enough' to use.
DD1 also has an unusual name (53 babies in her year of birth), but it's a bit more commonly known as it's a few generations old. People often say 'Oh, my great aunt was called X'. It's not very popular when it's been mentioned on this website, but DH and I think it's a very pretty name.
We chose both names just because we liked them, but it was important that they weren't too common as well.

tabbycat985 · 24/09/2019 09:35

Can anyone link me to last years list? I can only find 2017!

When people ask DSs name, the first thing they always say is 'that's unusual' or 'l've never heard that before'
I didn't think it was that out there but I've never met another

diddlediddle · 24/09/2019 08:30

This thread is such a tease 🙄

Grufallosfriends · 24/09/2019 08:23

I think by definition a less popular name, one that is used under 20 times per year, isn't going to be very widespread. It will also not be 'loved' by everyone (including Mumsnet) because if it were, it would be more popular!

Byebyefriend · 24/09/2019 08:02

My dd has an unusual name, 31 others also named it the same year. Never met anyone called it

Ds has a very normal name, not met anyone under 30 with it but it's always top 20 name but must not be popular where we live.

Bol87 · 23/09/2019 22:17

My little girls name (well nickname, we never use her full name) is not unusual but not very common. I’ve only ever met one other child with her name randomly in front of us in an airport queue in Spain!

It’s a little more commonly used as a nickname amongst my Grandparents generation. My great-grandma had the nickname name too although I only found out after my daughter was born and my Grandpa was really emotional when I told him!

It’s a name I have always loved & my other half liked. He wanted a ‘full name’ so we went with one on the birth certificate but only nursery use it. She answers to both, doesn’t seem to confused!

StormBaby · 23/09/2019 21:34

My youngest sons name gets mentioned a lot on threads here as a suggestion. I've never met another. I'll be glad if it does rise in popularity as we won't get so many looks. He has the long version on his birth certificate so it's less 'nicknamey'.

NeverGotMyPuppy · 23/09/2019 21:28

DS is one of 34 babies registered with his name last year and there isnt an alternative spelling that would be the more popular version. We chose it because we love it, not because it was unusual. Funnily enough I looked up our preferred girls name (we didnt know the sex) and there were 32 of them!

GummyGoddess · 23/09/2019 16:23

No, I didn't think it was that unusual and assumed I'd meet a few others. Haven't met a single one so far! When I checked ons, only 6 children were given the name that year.

Stravapalava · 23/09/2019 16:21

My 2 have unusual names, they are very occasionally come across them on baby name threads on here. One is usually spelt incorrectly differently and the other, despite being seemingly more common IRL isn't really mentioned on here, but I see her unusual middle name mentioned a little more.

17caterpillars1mouse · 23/09/2019 16:16

Dd1 has an unusual name (10 the year she was born, 8 last year) I chose it because I loved it but being unusual was a plus. I met another baby born the same year with the same name in lidl though lol so you just never know.

Dd2 has a name that is uncommon but mentioned loads on here, generally positive. There were 53 born last year. We have yet to meet another one

My eldest was one of only 30 given her name 13 years ago, which jumped to about 150 a few years ago, from 2000th in the chart to about 180th over a decade. I first heard it screeched accross a playground by a smoking fake tanned mum, and was absolutely gutted. I've come across a few more in those years. Second born was the only one born with his name that year, there are between 0-5 born every year, it's somewhere in the 3000's in the charts. I've come across 2 others on Instagram but not in real life. 3rd born has a slightly more popular but still unusual name at about 150 born a year, and below the 300th in the charts, I've had people tell me they know someone else with the name, and I've seen some online, but not actually met one. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we did, though I would with middle child.

For me name doesn't have to be exremely unusual but I have written of names I really liked if they were in or fastly approaching the top 100. That is because I have had issues with a very popular name, I think very popular names date adults, and names lose something once they become very popular, particular ones to a certain generation and not timeless names. There were a few names that were more popular than what we ultimately went with that I would have been happy to choose though, if we could agree on them.

sleeveofstickers · 23/09/2019 07:36

My dd's name is unusual, only 6 others named it the year she was born I think. Chose it because we love it and I prefer unusual names. Not come across another until recently on a TV show!

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 23/09/2019 07:28

With my 3, I wouldn’t even say they were unusual names in that if you heard them, you’d say “oooh never heard that before!” It’s more just that they’re never used. One is even a very famous actress’s name that my dad habitually mispronounces.

It is very USUAL however for my middle child, DD1, to have her name picked up by other children as some kind of mythical creature at pre school and now Reception. So many parents have come up to me and said “Aaahhh THAT’s XXX - we weren’t sure if she was real!” Grin

My 2 have unique names, 1 was 1 of 13 in her year's ons name survey, the other was less than 1 in her year.

They are based on something we both love and as they grow they seem to suit them more! They do have a sensible (!) Middle name should they prefer to use (I hope not!)

tvdinnertracks · 23/09/2019 06:52

Never seen mine, dh or ds's name on here.

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 23/09/2019 06:49

Both of my kids have fairly unusual names (800+ in the name stats for the years they were born). We chose them because they were the names we liked best, but I wanted them to have names outside the top 50-ish. I have a very popular name (classic and doesn’t date, but was the top girls name for the year I was born) and wanted my children to have something a little more unusual.

I see my daughter’s name mentioned on this board every now and again, but I don’t think I’ve seen my son’s name mentioned more than once or twice. Neither are names I hear called across parks/playgrounds.

Currently expecting DC3 and our girls name is more popular than we usually choose (it gets mentioned here a lot); our boys name is mentioned here sometimes but according to the stats isn’t used much.

BethanyGilbert · 23/09/2019 06:29

My daughters name is top 10 so we hear it all the time. My niece as far as we can find out is only the second child registered with that name in recent times with the last on being in the early norties. My sister is very protective of the name like PP mentioned!

Geekynzmum · 23/09/2019 06:20

We called our DD Lillian and have only ever come across 1 other with that name and she was our local librarian. I've seen her name come up once or twice on threads, but never anywhere else.
We chose her name as it was a compromise with names DH and I liked - Lillith for DH, and Lily for me though I would have spelt it Lillie. Grin
Another unusual name that I love and would have used if we'd had another DD is Cassandra. I think it's such a lovely name and can be shortened to Cassie. I met a little girl with the name when I was in my early 20s (friend's flatmate's DD), and have loved it ever since. I would dream of having 2 girls called Lillie and Cassie, I got my Lillie but sadly won't get my Cassie as we stopped after DD. Smile

hooowl · 22/09/2019 23:21

hooowl is your ds called Anyfucker

Ahaha! Hmm not quite...
I really want to know all these names now... Will someone be brave?
I'm assuming sum has a Balonz...

gforg · 22/09/2019 23:04

Out of my 3 my eldests name is now 'popular' very annoying as the first few years of her life I'd never heard it. Bloody tv shows 🙄 my younger 2 I've never come across although my youngest is known just not used it seems xx

Trenchcoated · 22/09/2019 22:50

I’ve never met another of DS’s name. I don’t think any others were born in his birth year in this country. Absolutely the fact that it was very unusual was a factor.

It gets mentioned very occasionally on here as being a ‘brave’, out there choice, which I thank is a bit mad.

moodyblues · 22/09/2019 22:29

My ds has a Spanish name and apparently I am a dick for naming him that because we have no Spanish connections (according to mumsnet).

It’s a fab name and he really suits it so fuck it.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 22/09/2019 22:24

DD’s name is suggested occasionally on Irish girls’ name threads- we’ve only come across one other dc in the wild with the same name.

hooowl is your ds called Anyfucker Grin
