Hi there. OH and I are settled on a nature led first name as we love the environment and it just feels right for us as parents. What do you think of this shortlist and do you have any suggestions? I’ve struggled to find names we agree on and almost all of these are very popular which isn’t ideal Confused

Girls:
Ivy
Lily
Rose
Violet

Boys:
Rowan
Robin
Kit
Hazel (my personal favourite for a son but OH insist it’s a ‘girls name’ Blush)

I’m not sure about Sparrow as a middle name (though it’s better than thrush!)

My friend’s middle name is Merlin (a small hawk, fairly rare in the U.K.). You could also have Peregrine, Acquilla (eagle), Ptarmigan etc.

AlliKaneErikson · 11/10/2019 11:49

When my dd was born the lady in the bed opposite called her newborn son Bear. It took ages to click why something was odd...her other son was Teddy. I kid you not.

Zanzan1 · 06/10/2019 19:06

How about Elowen. It means Elm tree

MissHenty · 06/10/2019 11:48

Ignore predictive text messing up first sentence

  • I agree with you to an extent and wouldn’t personally call my child “Bear”....
MissHenty · 06/10/2019 11:47

@MagicKindomDizzy I agree with you to an extent a small I personally wouldn’t call my child “Bear” but we need to get with the times a bit. 113 boys were called Bear last year in this country. It’s no longer an unusual name. I know someone called Wolf and someone called Fox (no one called Bear). I think we imagine a little boy called “bear” being in our playgrounds in the 1980s. Yes that little boy would probably have got teased. I think it’s very unlikely now

MagicKingdomDizzy · 06/10/2019 11:05

I've just come off a thread about a 13 year old girl wanting to change her name and the mother was very unhappy.

Your names Kit and Ivy are nice and mainstream, but some of the suggestions on here (Moss, Bear etc) show that people don't actually consider the child having to grow up with such a name.

AlliKaneErikson · 04/10/2019 07:59

I remember reading the book ‘The Family from One End Street’ as a kid; all the girls had nature names and when they had a bit they introduced him as ‘William- Sweet William’. I thought that was cute.

Kit River goes well, too.
Kit Winter/Autumn
Ivy Brook
Ivy Gaia (Earth Godess)

MissHenty · 02/10/2019 09:47

@Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav I like Ivy River , that’s a good suggestion

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 02/10/2019 08:39

Ooh I like that idea
Ivy sparrow
Ivy robyn
Ivy willow
Ivy brooke
Ivy sage

Kit river
Kit forest
Kit bear
Kit robin
Kit Bracken
Kit wolf
I'll stop now... 😂
Ivy river

LoveGrowsWhere · 01/10/2019 21:48

I think Prof Brian Cox son has the middle name Eagle?

MissHenty · 01/10/2019 21:43

@ForestDweller27

I actually really like Ivy Sparrow (Ivy is one of my most favourite names btw and Sparrow is nice- hasn’t Nicole Richie used it?)

Kit is lovely. How about middle name ‘Forrest’ if you’re wanting something nature based but very unusual. Or ‘Berry’? Or Radley or Ash.

Getting quite into this will leave it there. 🤣

ForestDweller27 · 01/10/2019 20:53

Thank you for the suggestions Smile

I think we’ve settled on Ivy and Kit as our first choices, with slightly more out there middle names. I love the idea of Ivy Sparrow, for example Blush

Would a child called Hayes come with an instruction manual?

123Dancewithme · 24/09/2019 00:24

You could have Haze or Hayes for a boy instead of Hazel.

dorothysredshoes · 23/09/2019 22:44

Love Rose and Rowan. Hazel def a girls name. I love the name Wren, Clementine, Skye

MissHenty · 23/09/2019 20:45

@MsJRMEsq I suppose it’s all relative. 742 is a lot if you want a fairly unusual name. Plus it’s not just the current number, it’s the growth of the name. The growth year on year of names like Roman and Arlo has been huge. They’ve come from nowhere to be top 50 and if the continue this trajectory they’ll be top 10 in a couple of years. A bit like Noah or Theo five to ten years ago. Those names weren’t that popular then but you could see the way they were going by looking at the statistics

MsJRMEsq · 23/09/2019 17:52

Being in the top 100 doesn't mean there are a lot of babies with that name - take Grayson (horrible name IMO) as an example, there were still only 742 of them born last year.

MsJRMEsq · 23/09/2019 17:42

Hazel is a girls name, like many have said.

I wouldn't use Rowan because of how similar it is to Roman - I hate the name Roman, probably because I only know one and he is vile just like his mother

FizzyGreenWater · 23/09/2019 17:39

Fave

FizzyGreenWater · 23/09/2019 17:39

Hazel - girl or rabbit, sorry.

If you like Hazel for a boy then go for Heath.

Girls - Linnet would be my nature name face.

Lilena94 · 23/09/2019 14:32

Hazel is a girl name!
Love Lily

MissHenty · 23/09/2019 13:38

Nature names for girls are much easier

Perhaps restricting yourself to boys’ nature names might prove tricky- would you consider looking beyond a nature theme?

For boys, if you’re concerned about popularity, I’d chose Robin from your list. I also liked the name Rowan but it’s dramatically increasing in popularity now and for the first time in history its entered the top 100 lists. On current trajectory it’ll be top 50 and then top 10 very soon. My bug bear about the name is also that it is so similar to the name RoMan. Again, a couple of years ago this wouldn’t have been an issue but RoMan has also come from nowhere to now be a top 50 name and on its current trajectory it’s going to be top 10 in the next few years as it’s growth is showing no sign of slowing. I wouldn’t always find it irritating when people ask “so is your son RoMan with an M or W”. I’ve heard that a couple of times at baby group. I guess both names could date very quickly if the disappear as quickly as they’ve burst into favour. This generations Keith or Darren

How about Radley (red forest)

I like the suggestion of Ash

VenusClapTrap · 23/09/2019 12:59

Joeybee I know a little boy called Marlow, so I think that one’s unisex.
