I’m drawn to the ‘old lady’ name theme but don’t want a name that’s going to be the latest fad. What do people think of:

Marion
Mary
Margot
Marianne
Marianna
Martha

Thanks!

I adore Mary
I like Martha and Marianna

Joeybee · 21/09/2019 21:33

Margot and Martha are rising in popularity quite a lot. The others not so much. I love M names, they always, to me, have a perfect mix of sounding strong but feminine and never too popular.
I also like Millicent, Meredith and Marigold and Margaret.

KnickerBockerGlooooory · 21/09/2019 21:18

I have a Macy. I like Meredith (Merry) too.

VenusClapTrap · 21/09/2019 21:18

I love Marianne.

aibutohavethisusername · 21/09/2019 21:17

Marion is lovely

Bobbindobbin · 21/09/2019 21:02

Maud ❤️

Dobinette · 21/09/2019 21:00

Love the name Marianne. Haven't heard of many.

diddlediddle · 21/09/2019 20:41

Marion and Meredith are my favourites and least likely to be faddy. Both classy and classic names with nice history.

Marianne I find quite twee and also 70s at the same time (not in a good way)

Whiteandblue · 21/09/2019 20:34

Thanks yeah I knew Martha’s been on trend for a while & I thought Margot was catching up although I don’t know any. Wondering if Marianne & Meredith will follow...
I do like Mary but wonder if it’s actually a bit boring!

In ‘M’ names I like:
Maeve
Marnie
Mabel
Merryn

I think Margot sounds quite harsh and Martha is popular (not that that should put you off)

AndromedaPerseus · 21/09/2019 19:55

Morag
Miranda
Maggie
Mirabelle

Marchitectmummy · 21/09/2019 19:42

Margot was unusual but now it's so common. Everyone is using it since Margot Robbie. 20 girls in our youngest girls year 5 are Margots.

Chillisauceboss · 21/09/2019 19:36

I live in London and Margot, Martha are super super popular. Marion is also catching on too

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 21/09/2019 18:04

I've recently heard of a Maud and know of several Marthas. Marianna is too many syllables for me, I prefer Marianne.

I really like Meredith.

nuckyscarnation · 21/09/2019 18:03

I love Mary and Marianne. I was going to call one of my twins Marianne if I’d had two girlsSmile

Chocolateandcarbs · 21/09/2019 18:02

Miriam? Marie/a?

ButterflyOfFreedom · 21/09/2019 17:55

I'd say Martha is the most popular by quite a long way.
I like Margot but can see that getting popular too.
I think Mary is under used, I only know one under 45!!

Mariella
Margaret
Margarita
Maureen / Mo
Mavis
Morven
Marcia/ Marsha
Morve
Marina
Marta
Marjorie

Foodtheif · 21/09/2019 17:55

Margot is the only one I like out of those. What about Maisie / Marnie / Meghan

missmouse101 · 21/09/2019 17:52

Margot is hideous. Martha lovely but popular. Marianne is just beautiful!

Pantheon · 21/09/2019 17:49

I know one baby Margot and one baby Mary and a 30 something Marianne :) all nice names

florascotia2 · 21/09/2019 17:46

John Wayne's name and the female name Marion (both spelled in the same way) have different origins.

Marion is French (and also Scottish) female name. The 'on' ending is a diminutive. A short, informal, affectionate version of 'Marie' or 'Mary'. The name goes way back, to the Middle Ages.

John Wayne's name 'Marion' was a version of a SURNAME.

There's nothing to support the idea that Marion with an 'o' is masculine and Marian with an 'a' is feminine.

Oakandlove · 21/09/2019 17:03

Marianne is lovely, not as common as it once was I'd guess.

StroppyWoman · 21/09/2019 16:43

Oh, and I know 6 Marthas so I'd probably steer away from that.

I like Maeve, Maude, Mollie and Mabel in the old fashioned names, what about them?

BumblyBeeBum · 21/09/2019 16:41

I love Mary & Martha.

Martha is in the top 100 ONS list so it quite popular and rising year on year.

Meredith is a good shout too.
