Hi,

I'm due in just a few weeks and we don't know what we're having. We're settled on a girl's name but are still musing on a boys' names. All together our families are Scandinavian/Scottish/English/French, and our surname is French. We like the following:

Front runners:
Louis
Ralph (pron. Rafe before anyone asks).
Laurence

On our long list:
Lysander
Rollo
Magnus
Hector
Frederic

I have one favourite from these: the others don't quite click as being 'the one'. What do you think? Any other contenders?

Love Louis

@MrsJoshNavidi Rollo's not made up I'm afraid, and perfect if you have French and Scandi heritage: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rollo

And yes it would be a short 'o'. DH isn't a fan of Rollo though so I just kept it in to be cheeky really.

Loving all your comments so far - Louis (for me the French pronunciation is the only one) and Laurence have been our two faves, but DH isn't sure Laurence is the one. I still really like it. We're agreed it will be a middle name if we don't use it for the first name though.

Love Louis.

MrsJoshNavidi · 20/09/2019 17:36

Just realised you've put Rollo, not Rolio (not wearing my glasses Blush)

Rollo gets my vote, as long as you're using a short o not a long one

MrsJoshNavidi · 20/09/2019 17:34

Louis - "Lewie" or "Lewis"? But neither floats my boat

Ralph (pron. Rafe before anyone asks). Ok, but will get pronounced incorrectly.

Laurence - yes

Lysander - no

Rollo - no (?made up)

Magnus - only if you're Icelandic, or big

Hector - ok, ish

Frederic - yes, but with a ck at the end

IckleBear · 20/09/2019 17:09

I love Hector and Magnus!

Fivebeanchilli · 20/09/2019 14:42

Louis - I like this. It would worry me that some people would pronounce it wrongly though (Lewis)
Ralph (pron. Rafe before anyone asks) - I'd spell it Rafe. Otherwise he'll constantly be telling people.
Laurence - I love this.

Lysander - not keen, too Midsummer Night's Dream
Rollo - not keen at all
Magnus - lovely
Hector - lovely
Frederic - really nice but too many Freddies around

Grufallosfriends · 20/09/2019 14:28

I like Magnus a lot. Or how about Quentin or Fabian?

FairfaxAikman · 20/09/2019 10:02

I love Ralph. Would have been on our list but we went for something very Scottish.

LarkDescending · 20/09/2019 09:53

Louis! Love it.

I also love Laurence, but you say you have French family links, and it’s a female name in France.

MikeUniformMike · 19/09/2019 10:35

Louis - ok, but Prince Louis
Ralph (pron. Rafe before anyone asks). - no
Laurence - no

Lysander - no
Rollo - no
Magnus - yes
Hector - no
Frederic - ok, but lots of Freddies

whatausername · 19/09/2019 10:32

Rollo is Rolo to me. Tasty although I swear they changed the chocolate a few years back. Also sounds like some rotund posh-o caricature in a comedy.

whatausername · 19/09/2019 10:30

Louis and Ralph! Although I do like Hector despite it sounding rather harsh.

Frith2013 · 19/09/2019 10:28

Louis - ok
Ralph (pron. Rafe before anyone asks). - don’t like this one

Laurence - fine

On our long list:
Lysander - sounds like a treatment for head lice
Rollo - I know and despise one
Magnus - great
Hector - hectoring
Frederic - ok

Cookit · 19/09/2019 10:23

Rafe is the traditional pronunciation of Ralph.

Loveislandaddict · 19/09/2019 10:10

Lysander reminds me of Jilly Cooper, but I quite like. It

Loveislandaddict · 19/09/2019 10:10

I love Magnus and Frederic

MissHenty · 19/09/2019 10:05

Louis or Rafe

Petrichor11 · 19/09/2019 09:49

Lysander

crustycrab · 19/09/2019 09:37

Nobody heard of Ralph Fiennes then? Confused

However, I think wreck it Ralph is more popular these days so he'll get called Ralph.

Louis or Laurence of those choices

PrincessHoneysuckle · 19/09/2019 09:34

I like Rafe but if you spell it like Ralph its Ralph.I think everyone would pronounce it like that.

Chillisauceboss · 19/09/2019 09:33

I've never heard of Ralph being pronounced Rafe? I've always known them as two different names? How common is Ralph but pronounced Rafe?

Jossina · 19/09/2019 09:32

Hector, Lysander or Laurence.

CampfireZen · 19/09/2019 09:22

Louis for the win.

NoSauce · 19/09/2019 09:18

I like Magnus and Rollo.
