Not sure I love my baby's name anymore

We called our baby Sebastian.

I felt a little rushed as after a week everyone was badgering us for a name. I really loved it at the time but as times gone on it feels really odd to say his name. Every time I say it it just doesn't feel right. It's too late to change it and he responds to his name.

Will he grow into his name?

Any positive comments on the name Sebastian to help me love it once again?

(Please don't make me sad with negative comments)

I totally love Sebastian.

OvalCanvas · 18/09/2019 19:49

I felt similarly about the name we chose for our youngest. I realised after a few weeks that the full version is a bit 'big' for him while he's a baby , we shortened the name and it suits him perfectly.

Fwiw, I like Seb.

Congratulations btwSmile

Hi OP, I do had major name wobbles and I regretted naming my child a longer formal name that I didn’t feel was her as we said from day one She would be known as the short name which isn’t the obvious shortening and one a lot of people in the real world other than mumsnet don’t even no it’s short for the longer name. After 4 months we ( my husband and I) decided to change it. I was so Down about registering the longer name and not the name She is known as and decided to make the change when she was 4 months. I just wanted to send my love and virtual hugs as I know how this can consume your thoughts which if you haven’t been through this other people don’t tend to understand as much. please do what you what to do not what others think.

I love the name Sebastian. Lots of room for nicknames. Sadly it doesn't go with the surname at all so we didn't use it.

Paddy1234 · 18/09/2019 19:43

I love the name Sebastian!

jitterbugg · 18/09/2019 19:43

My brother is Sebastian (Bash)
It is my DS middle name.
I love if

BergamotMouse · 18/09/2019 19:42

81Byerley - your grandson is very lucky to have a grandparent like you.

I'm sure I will get used to the name, especially once his personality starts to develop.

I felt exactly the same about my daughters name. Loved the name when we picked it and loved the name once she was born but it felt wrong for her initially. It felt so strange calling her that name at first. I was really worried for a while thinking we’d made the wrong choice. She’s 4 now and her name suits her perfectly. It fits her personality. It’s also a great name to shorted, like Sebastian, so we’ve got several nicknames for her which she loves.

I love the name Sebastian. That was our first choice if we’d have had a boy. I think it’s a great name for all ages and has lots of great nicknames. I’m sure it’s perfectly normal to have doubts. Try not to worry :)

You're welcome BergamotMouse.

How old is your precious DS?

BergamotMouse · 18/09/2019 19:39

Thanks MrsDimmond for reiterating that. I had hoped my end comment would prevent those kind of responses but I guess not Sad.

And thanks to those with positive comments. It has helped and knowing that others have felt similar but they're children have grown into their names help.

Even though it shouldn't matter what others think, it does help that people think it's a nice name so thank you Smile.

I love the name as well. But if you don't feel comfortable, try to shorten it and see if that feels better. You will get used to it. My little Grandson decided to be a girl at aged 4. It took me about a month to get used to calling her by her chosen girl's name, and now it would be weird using "he" and her boy's name. If I can do that, I think you can get used to your little boy's name!

MrsDimmond · 18/09/2019 19:32

Ffs why post your negative opinions when OP made a specific request not to Hmm

And countering your negative opinion with "but my opinion doesn't matter" doesnt help at all.

OP hasn't said that the issue is with other people, it's about her feelings which she would like to revert back to feeling positive!

Sebastian is a great name OP. Definitely classic, and scope for nick names that can develop with him! I hope your positivity returns asap!

I think if you don't like it then the earlier you change it the better.

ilovemykids5 · 18/09/2019 19:28

I love the name Sebastian.

I was in the same situation when I had my daughter. Everyone nagging for a name. I called her scarlett in the end. It took a while for me to get used to it.
I still don't love the name but it suits her and you couldnt imagine her with any other name.

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 18/09/2019 19:27

I love it and love seb

Windydaysuponus · 18/09/2019 19:25

Ime whatever name you choose it seems like you are playing a game and using a fake name until your dc gets some personality!

Then they own their name!

Starrgreen72 · 18/09/2019 19:23

If you really don’t like it anymore just change it to he’s middle name before he’s gets too old . This is why I never told anyone the name I choose until he was here so no body could change my mind - good luck

EssentialHummus · 18/09/2019 19:21

DD was exclusively called “Squidgy” for the first year because I couldn’t come round to her name. It’s fine now Grin.

MamaFlintstone · 18/09/2019 19:20

I felt weird calling my DD a name. Before she was born she was known as 'the baby'
It felt very forced but it got easier.

Same for me, it took a good few months for me to be used to calling her by her name, now she’s 2 it suits her perfectly.

leomama81 · 18/09/2019 19:15

I really like it, and I'm not into pretentious names. I'm two months off having a little boy and if I didn't have a good friend with a son called that I may well have gone for it myself.

Do you generally call him Sebastian, or Seb / Sebi? Perhaps if the former it is because it's quite a grown up name for a baby? Maybe calling him by a diminutive now and letting him grow into the longer name would make it feel more natural?

Grufallosfriends · 18/09/2019 19:15

I don't like Sebastian as it reminds me of sebaceous and I don't like Seb or Basty.

But what we think is irrelevant. YOU have got to love it. If you don't and he's under one year, it's easy to change

pictish · 18/09/2019 19:12

I’m sorry but I don’t like Sebastian. I think it’s a fussy, pretentious name. So sorry again. Not saying that to be hurtful but if you’re thinking along the same lines as me...
My opinion matters not one jot though - please don’t take that to heart or as a personal dig. It’s not.

flowerstar19 · 18/09/2019 19:09

I also love it! I agree classic but not over used, I don't think you can ever go wrong with a classic name :)

KatyaK · 18/09/2019 19:08

I really like it Smile Seb is a cool NN
