Not sure I love my baby's name anymore

We called our baby Sebastian.

I felt a little rushed as after a week everyone was badgering us for a name. I really loved it at the time but as times gone on it feels really odd to say his name. Every time I say it it just doesn't feel right. It's too late to change it and he responds to his name.

Will he grow into his name?

Any positive comments on the name Sebastian to help me love it once again?

(Please don't make me sad with negative comments)

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I love it. My choice of nicknames would be Seb. Agree that babies grow in to their names. They are so small how can they suit any name really?

Puffykins · 18/09/2019 21:50

I love the name Sebastian. I also love Sebby and Basti as shortenings. It took me a long time to recognise my children as 'being' their names. I called them Tiny and Minnie for about the first three years of their lives.

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 18/09/2019 21:44

I felt the same with two of mine. First being Samuel, I didn't love it, I had a cousin with that name but it was the only name me and his dad could agree on. I was adamant that he was only going to be called by Samuel but it felt like such hard work everytime I said it
He's now Sam, unless in serious trouble and suits it so much better.
My daughter is called Niamh. It's a name I've always loved and pushed for it. When she was born, it seemed such a hard, harsh name to call a soft squidgy cute baby. I can't imagine her being anything other than that name now. It takes time it they really do grow into their names and Sebastian is a great name

Beautiful3 · 18/09/2019 21:35

I felt the same with both babies. They grew into their names.

Londonsuffolkmummy · 18/09/2019 21:31

Personally I love it

It’s my partners name I was going to choose it for our son decided on something else

Littledryad · 18/09/2019 21:24

I'm the same with my DS name. He's 6 weeks. I think it's because he looks like his brother and cousin and I keep getting muddled with names. I hope. Its the only name I wanted the whole pregnancy and now it feels weird to say. So you're not alone.
On the plus side all the Sebastians I know (3) they are all lovely

AlphabetMummy · 18/09/2019 21:18

I love Sebastian! But i dont think anyones name suits them or is comfortable to use in the beginning.. my oldest is always called his initials (AJ) hes now nearly 5 and if you call him his full name he denies thats his name. We thought wed carry that on with number 2 and use a shortened version of his name, but he very fast became a full name child, hes 3 now and calling him anything other than Bentley is weird! The last is nearly a yr and a half and I have called him his real first name twice maybe.. oops! His nickname is Ducky! And i spend more time explaining to people that that is not his real name, than actually using his real name!! Lmao! Should have just named him Ducky!!!
Now on number 4, well see.. in love with his name atm, but who knows! Different with every child hun!
Relax! Hell get to a certain age and insist you call him a version of his name that he likes! :D

SylvanianFrenemies · 18/09/2019 21:05

I know one, he's 11,known as Seb or Sebby. Really cool and distinctive.

AuroraBor · 18/09/2019 20:55

Love it! I know 4 Sebastians and all of them are charming, caring and very talented , so have the best associations with the name.

On the other hand, you not being too attached to the name might not be so bad. If your son will not like his name growing up you'll be more open to letting him change it and picking one himself. (Know a girl who hated hers but it was a struggle with her parents to get it changed.)

MunsteadWood · 18/09/2019 20:44

I love the name Sebastian but more importantly I wanted to reassure you that I felt this way about my DSs name for at least the first six months or so, probably longer (I lose track now). I also felt rushed into a decision and DH and I just couldn't agree on a name. We ended up going with one I liked but didn't love, just because it was the only one we found that neither of us disliked. I found the more other people used the name the more I got used to it, and particularly as DS started to learn his name and respond to it it started to feel like "him". Now he's aged nearly 2 and says his name all the time, I can't imagine him being called anything else! But for at least the first six months or so I was convinced we'd made a terrible mistake and could barely bring myself to say his name, thinking up all kinds of silly nicknames to call him instead. What I'm saying is that I think it's not uncommon to feel this way and am sure your DS will grow into his name in time.

Bash is a cute NN for Sebastian.

Oh it really is!

NoSauce · 18/09/2019 20:40

It’s a bit odd that you need strangers on the internet to tell you they like the name.

YOU need to love it OP. It doesn’t matter that others think it’s nice or their brother/son has the same name.

It sounds like you’re unsure. It’s a big thing, think hard whether this is the right name for your son.

bridgetreilly · 18/09/2019 20:20

I would try not to think about it too much. Soon enough the name won't even register as a name, it'll just be him and you won't even think about it.

thisusernameismine · 18/09/2019 20:18

Sebastian was my top boy name! But we had a girl. Seb is what my husband would have called him, I quite liked Basti. Sebastian is from my favourite childhood film, never ending story. It's a wonderful name xx

Thatnovembernight · 18/09/2019 20:18

I love the name. One of my friends has one always known as Seb and he’s great. I love Bastian as NN too. Good choice Smile

KipperTheFrog · 18/09/2019 20:15

Loved both my DD's names before they were born, and love them now. But there was definitely a period where I thought "wtf have we done?" I think it's normal to feel that way.
You chose that name for a reason, because you loved it. You will love it again.

Betty777 · 18/09/2019 20:14

I love it, it was my other choice for my DS. Lucky we didnt' go with it, as his best school friend is now 'Bastian'.

One of the reasons I think I like it in the first place is that I've known a couple of charming and handsome men called Seb :-)

Terriergrrrrrrrr · 18/09/2019 20:09

Lovely name. He'll grow into it.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 18/09/2019 20:01

As others have said, if you really want to it can be changed, but, not that my opinion matters I think it’s a lovely name when a formal full name is called for and it’s guaranteed he’ll actually be known as some shorter pet or nickname as he gets a bit older. You could actually choose one now, there are lots of possibilities and opportunities to do with his personality as it forms.

My DCs are grown up now and they’re always known by nicknames that have nothing to do with their given names. One of them has a given name I love and while I like another’s I would never choose it now and have always regretted it. The important thing though, is that they actually like it.

I think that these days and especially on MN , there’s a self induced pressure for perfection. Don’t let that get to you to doubt yourself, but if you truly are unhappy know that you can do something about it. What would you choose instead?

HeadLikeAFuckinOrange · 18/09/2019 19:59

I really like it, OP!

Are you maybe having trouble connecting such a strong sounding name to a tiny baby? They do grow into them, honest!
Far much more than a 35yr old bank manager called Tiger, or a CEO called Tinkerbell.

I had my heart set on Alexandra for DD1, there was no other name ever chosen and we used it. But for the first few months it didn't feel like 'her' name at all.
I didn't use it in pregnancy, she was Bean, or Squish.

But I've no regrets at all, she has grown into a lovely young woman who really suits her name, and always did...it just felt a very grown up name for my baby at the time.

pictish · 18/09/2019 19:57

Sorry again, I did skim read.

It feels weird calling your baby any name you choose rather than ‘baby’.
I’m sure you’ll grow to like it.
Apologies.

nespressowoo · 18/09/2019 19:55

I love Sebastian - it is on my list for when we have no2 Smile

AmericanLemonade · 18/09/2019 19:54

Love the name Sebastian, it was on the list if DD had been a boy. Her name is Imogen and it took ages to get used to calling her anything but ‘Bean’. She’s 8 next month and I can’t imagine her going by any other name.

BethanyGilbert · 18/09/2019 19:51

Bash is a cute NN for Sebastian.

riotlady · 18/09/2019 19:51

We nicknamed the foetus Pip when we found out I was pregnant and when my daughter was born it felt so strange to call her by her real name instead of Pip! It definitely felt weird for a while but I got used to it and I can’t imagine calling her anything else now
