I love the name Hugo but DH thinks it might seem a bit posh/pretentious. What do you think?

To clarify what I mean by that.. it's a name that used to be posh but is now one of those names that has become popular because people are trying too hard to be posh. I envisage the mum would shop at joules, drive a suv and have several holidays a year.. but behind the scene be drowning in credit card debt trying to keep up with the Jones.

I may have over thought this one... Grin

I think what a gorgeous name it is and how mad I am that we both would have sounded ridiculous calling our kid in the park: mancunian DH would be ‘yougow!’ And I would sound way too posh 😄 we’re in surrey but that’s just not me. Oh also we have an H surname and I have an H first name so it would just be too much.

SUCH a cute name though, and works for all ages I reckon!

Bart Simpson's evil twin who lives in the attic.

daisypond · 18/09/2019 11:15

It has a slightly posh vibe but is becoming more mainstream. But the only Hugo I know is very posh and rich.

ComftyCushion · 18/09/2019 11:15

It's a bit try hard ... as in trying to be posh but failing.

DarlingOscar · 18/09/2019 11:14

snort at Quentin....

Hugo is still v posh round here. Sorry.

Lavenderblues · 18/09/2019 10:51

Anyone can use any names, they really aren't restricted to a certain group of people Hmm

I agree that names like Sebastian, Quentin, Rupert and Hugo are becoming much more mainstream.

Peony99 · 18/09/2019 10:49

Love it.

I only know posh ones, but that wouldn't worry me.

Grufallosfriends · 18/09/2019 10:45

Names like Sebastian, Hugo and Quentin might have been 'posh' in the past but not anymore imo.

I know kids with these names at our local primary school

FizzyGreenWater · 18/09/2019 10:05

Yes exactly. We've got names like Otis and Hugo and Bruno popping up all over here. Not posh. Oh and a Rupert come to think of it!

FizzyGreenWater · 18/09/2019 10:04

No, Hugo is lovely. Nice laid back vibe and interesting but easy to spell. I know one whose dad's side are German thus the name, and one baby one who looks EXACTLY like a Hugo.

No class associations really for me.

MissHenty · 18/09/2019 10:00

Nah not anymore. Maybe 10-15 years ago. It’s a lovely name and one which is no longer restricted to a particular class.
A bit like Arlo, which is used by all sorts of people. Same with Rupert now. At our school Ruperts were posh but they aren’t nowerdays. There’s a kid from the council estate called Rupert. No one bats an eyelid
