I love the name Hugo but DH thinks it might seem a bit posh/pretentious. What do you think?

Posh, pretentious, try hard.

It may have been seen as posh some years ago but I would never describe it as pretentious and puzzled by try hard.

It's a lovely name and I hope you're not put off by the inverse snobbery on here.

Mrsthomasshelby1 · 18/09/2019 17:11

Boss

Blue7 · 18/09/2019 17:09

I think of Hugo Horton

Me too.

Cattenberg · 18/09/2019 17:05

I’ve always thought of Hugo as being a name for chefs. I’ve only recently worked out why - Hugo the chef in the 80s kids’ programme, Pigeon Street! Great show. Hugo was married to Clara the long-distance lorry-driver and he’d have a hot meal waiting for her when she came home.

PlatoAteMySnozcumber · 18/09/2019 16:32

While many of the traditionally ‘posher’ names have become more mainstream, Hugo remains pretentious and try hard if you aren’t posh in my opinion. No idea why I think this, it’s just instinctive.

Astronica · 18/09/2019 16:27

Great name.

Mrscog · 18/09/2019 14:20

I think of my DS1!

And @ComftyCushion I do drive an SUV, but I don’t shop at Joules (too country middle class) or have multiple holidays. No credit card debt either. Main shops we use are H&M, Poundland, & Aldi. Grin

GummyGoddess · 18/09/2019 14:15

Guybrush Threepwood, Mighty Pirate! Grin

I have met one little Hugo, he has red hair and is very cute. Doesn't seem to be many where I live at the moment.

Sunflowersy · 18/09/2019 14:02

I think Hugo is a lovely name.

We're in Greater London and there are quite a few Hugos as well as Sebastians, Quentins and lots of other unusual and foreign names. No one bats an eyelid! I'm actually surprised at how narrow minded and 'judgmental' some posters are.

DarlingOscar · 18/09/2019 13:44

@Pippilangstrumpfi am South East London - we have lots of milos and ollies but no hugos or quentins that I know of......

Pippilangstrumpfi · 18/09/2019 11:46

@Darlingoscar, I wonder where you live as you find Hugo 'very posh round here' and find Quentin snort worthy ConfusedGrin? I'm genuinely interested!

BykerBykerOoh · 18/09/2019 11:37

Posh, pretentious, try hard. But if you like it, use it.

Lurleene · 18/09/2019 11:36

I think of the film Hugo, about an orphan who lives in a Paris train station. It's a lovely film and a lovely name.

JustOneSquareofDarkChocolate · 18/09/2019 11:34

Only pretentious when pronounced “you-go” with great emphasis by decidedly non-posh, English speaking as first language mother. (In DD’s class. Lovely little boy)

chesterdraws1 · 18/09/2019 11:34

We have a Hugo nn Hugs or Hugzy and he loves his name! And we ain't posh Grin

FrowningFlamingo · 18/09/2019 11:33

@KipperTheFrog me too! Ruled it out for us even though I liked it otherwise.

Letthemysterybe · 18/09/2019 11:32

Ten years ago I would have assumed Hugo = Posho. But not anymore. I think it’s a great name and I know a few little ones who are not posh, and a few big ones who are!

elQuintoConyo · 18/09/2019 11:31

Hugo Weaving, fantastic Australian actor.

It's a lovely name and one we considered, but we're in Spain and it's pronounced 'oo-go' here, ommiting the H completely.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 18/09/2019 11:30

"Bart Simpson's evil twin who lives in the attic.

I came here to say this.

KipperTheFrog · 18/09/2019 11:29

I think of Hugo Horton!

forkfun · 18/09/2019 11:28

I think of the drink.

Pippilangstrumpfi · 18/09/2019 11:28

More importantly, people become their name, not the other way round Smile

Pippilangstrumpfi · 18/09/2019 11:27

Yes, much more mainstream nowadays. I know Hugos from all sorts of backgrounds. I also hear Sebastian, Quentin and Rupert around here much more. All fine names imo.

bloodywhitecat · 18/09/2019 11:24

I think of a real little character I know, very cheeky, funny and brave, his name suits him down to the ground.

Antonin · 18/09/2019 11:18

Nice name and no longer has the posh overtones that Hugh has.
Go for it if you like it. A name that suits all ages and doesn’t need a nn
