I love the name Hugo but DH thinks it might seem a bit posh/pretentious. What do you think?

Vicar of Dibley

Jenniferat86 · 21/09/2019 09:54

Thanks for all the opinions! I was feeling really positive about the name from the comments at the beginning and then they've slowly diminished throughout the thread 😂 I still love the name though (and I’m not posh FYI) so it’s definitely one I’ll keep on my list!

I think of a Bulldog. But I do like the name.

Frith2013 · 20/09/2019 18:29

Man from Four Weddings and a Funeral

I like Hugo and know a few.
My first thoughts reading it on this thread were - white, posh, slim or small, right wing.
Interesting - those I know are not like that t all. Think it’s a name which’s till has quite a bit to throw off.
Like it as a name. Would like to see it used more.

BillieEilish · 20/09/2019 18:23

Really common in Spain, I like it though.

BethanyGilbert · 20/09/2019 18:21

I know brothers Braedon and Hugo

"Uncle Hugo loves you" Hugo Duncan, veteran NI radio DJ, proponent of country music

backaftera2yearbreak · 20/09/2019 07:07

Most irritating person I ever met at uni

DreamingofSunshine · 20/09/2019 07:06

I love it, but I chose it for DS1 so I'm biased.

@ComftyCushion no joules, suv or cc debt here! But we are 'posh' apparently so maybe that's why we chose it Grin

I like that DS isn't one of 5 with the same name in his class, but it isn't completely out there.

GaraMedouar · 20/09/2019 06:56

Posh

KatherineJaneway · 20/09/2019 06:43

I think Vicar of Dibley.

Charley50 · 20/09/2019 06:42

I love it.

AlliKaneErikson · 20/09/2019 06:42

aliensprig My cat Hugo is actually names after Hugo Lloris!

CarysRed · 19/09/2019 19:15

There’s nothing wrong with it, but I’m not a huge fan

BoudicasBoudoir · 19/09/2019 19:14

I think it’s a bit try-hard. One of those ‘aspirational’ names where the parents are quite newly middle-class... I prefer something plainer.

aliensprig · 19/09/2019 15:36

I know of two Hugos - one is the French goalkeeper for Tottenham Hotspur (Lloris) and the other is my neighbour's cat.

It's a pretty fun name to chant, if you're that way inclined... "HUUUUUUUGOOOOOOO" (The cat doesn't like it much.)

I quite like it Smile but sadly the football connotations rule it out for our baby!

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 19/09/2019 11:45

I think mega posh. Probably went to Eton and is a raving Tory.

Monday55 · 19/09/2019 04:36

Hugo Boss

devilishlygood · 19/09/2019 04:17

The Hugo I know is just the loveliest guy. Super intelligent, mildly sporty, witty. He is quite posh, but first and foremost, he’s just decent and he’s not audacious or ‘try hard’, he’s very down to earth. Before, I would have been pretty judgey about the name, but it has very positive associations for me.

SofiaAmes · 19/09/2019 01:40

I think of Hugo from Gang of 4. (who's lovely by the way)

UndomesticHousewife · 19/09/2019 01:34

It depends on where you live tbh.
Hugo, Rupert and Quentin are posh names, I don't know one person or child with those names and I live in a relatively 'well to do' area.
I know a few Sebastians though.
But Hugo is the best of the bunch.

mrgrtt123 · 19/09/2019 01:07

It reminds me of the movie Hugo, the kid who lives in a train station.
Asa Butterfield plays the character. All I know is that Hugo from the movie is a dreamer and he appreciates little things in life.

Newmummysu · 19/09/2019 00:59

Its cool, I know a Hugo and hes a wonderful little boy.
