Alternative for Maggie

Hi all, my husband and I are really struggling to come up with girls names we both like, mainly because he is insisting on Maggie and saying no to everything I suggest. I really dislike it but said we could compromise and use it as a middle name, which he says isnt a compromise at all and why wont I let him have it when he wants it so much. So.. i was thinking are there any names out there that can be shortened to Maggie but aren't Margaret or Magdalene? I like Madeleine but that would be shorted to Maddie. The kind of names I like that he's said no to are Evie, Poppy, Maeve, Isla, Olive, etc.

Tell him not to be such an arse

But to answer your actual question:
Margot / Magdalena / Agnes

Or any combo with the sounds:
Miranda Georgia
Madeleine Agnes
Marnie Allegra

The way we did it was quite simple. Each made a list of 10 names. Went through them. Any the other person didn't like came off the list. Those they did like or didn't mind went on the list. Eventually the list got narrowed down to a few we both really liked. I couldn't imagine keeping a name on the list that either of us didn't like.. I had names I was keen on but the minute by husband said he didn't like them I just dropped them and vice versa.

You need a better method.

As pp suggested, you both make lists of five or ten names. You each get a few vetoes. You work with the list of what remains to chose the best, together.

Why are you trying to find a long version of Maggie, when you don't like Maggie?

That's not compromise, it's capitulation.

BananaPlant · 14/09/2019 23:35

He really doesn’t get what compromise means does he.

He can’t force the name, you don’t like it. End of.

And as a pp said, why would you find a longer name that can be shortened to Maggie if you don’t like Maggie. Personally I dislike it, it’s harsh sounding and ugly.

I absolutely LOVE the name Maggie (my username is from a book where the protagonist was called Maggie but used Margot when she was being a 'difficult' teenager) and wanted to call my DD Maggie.

BUT.......Thatcher. Game over, really.

Don't agree to a name you dislike.

Lovetunnocks · 14/09/2019 22:43

Meg? Marissa?

Modestandatinybitsexy · 14/09/2019 22:36

Why does he get to insist on a name? You're doing all the hard work that should be your right!

I hope you can find a compromise. You should really like the name too. And Maggie is quite marmite. If you don't like it now you probably never will.

Frith2013 · 14/09/2019 19:03

I don’t like Maggie either, reminds me of Thatcher.

I do prefer it to Margot, which is the world’s ugliest girl’s name.

strawberrye · 14/09/2019 18:46

How about Maisie?

NoSauce · 14/09/2019 18:38

I don’t like Maggie either. It’s ugly and hard.
You need to both love the name for your baby.

tigertruly · 14/09/2019 18:34

I know a Magda I love it

ZZPer · 14/09/2019 17:07

Marjorie, Majella

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 14/09/2019 16:58

If you dislike Maggie, why would you accept a longer version of the name? Your husband would still call her Maggie. Would you call her only the long version? Sounds confusing and not a great compromise.

roseenglishrose · 14/09/2019 16:56

Peggy
Dotty
Melody

ImportantWater · 14/09/2019 16:54

There are loads of Nordic girl names that shorten to Maggie - like Magnea.

lookingatthings · 14/09/2019 16:52

My DH also loves Maggie. We settled on Margot, nn Maggie. Then we had a boy 😂

Newhouse76 · 14/09/2019 16:48

DD knows a Magnolia who shortens to Maggie

challengeyourreality · 14/09/2019 16:47

Margolette

FoxSquadKitten · 14/09/2019 16:44

Megan?

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 14/09/2019 16:40

I'd be more concerned with why he's being so selfish than what you are going to call your baby. Is he usually like this?

msbevvy · 14/09/2019 16:37

Marguerite?

Ricekrispie22 · 14/09/2019 16:32

Agatha shortened to Aggie?

NoSquirrels · 14/09/2019 16:08

Pick on a name that you love and push it as hard as he's pushing Maggie

And ask him why he’s so mean he won’t say yes?

A good way to do it is get each of you to write a top 10 names list - no discussing. Then sit down with the lists. You each get 2 outright vetos - those are off the table completely. So you’re left with 16 names. Then you each put those in order. See if there’s any you both have in the top 10.

I love Maggie but if you don't like it you don't like it. Presume baby will be getting his surname!

I love Maeve from your suggestions. Tell him Maggie is rule out because you don't like it. I think you should stop suggesting every name under the sun in the hope he doesn't say no to it. That underlines the script he's got going there that he's the final say. That you have to submit names for his approval!

Pick on a name that you love and push it as hard as he's pushing Maggie.

This coming from a mother whose baby got its father's surname and he gave me a list of four names that were acceptable to him. They were the only four names he'd consider. I suggested every name in the baby book and he didn't even open the book.
