I'm currently 34+1 with a little girl. I love the name Megan, but I prefer it pronounced in the American way. So to make it clear, I'm planning to spell it Maygan. Or is that too weird??

Maegan is much better

Grufallosfriends · 14/09/2019 14:38

I think Maegan would work.

FairyDust92 · 14/09/2019 14:36

Oh no! It won't sound right with an English accent!

CodenameVillanelle · 14/09/2019 14:31

Maygan looks awful and it's really unfair to give a child a name that they will always have to spell out.
Maigan doesn't look quite as bad but it is still a weird spelling.

Lavenderblues · 14/09/2019 14:29

Or Char-luh

Lavenderblues · 14/09/2019 14:27

Never heard Charlie as Charloo?!

Lavenderblues · 14/09/2019 14:27

The OP is wanting the name Megan pronounced in a way that's adopting a silly accent for most people OR she's going to invent a non name.

She could also invent a new name. New names continue to be invented and every single name was once 'invented'

I think Maegan would work really well. It's easy to say, spell and pronounce.

LolaSmiles · 14/09/2019 14:15

No. It’s always Charlie

Or take names ending in an a like Rebecca. If you're from Newcastle then the a at the end is a sounds different than say received pronunciation.

How hard is it to realise that vowel sounds differ by region?

LolaSmiles · 14/09/2019 14:13

Sunshineys
I've got friends from Yorkshire and the 'lee' sound at the end of names often sounds like "luh/leh"'

Essentially my point is that names will sound different when people speak in different accents. It doesn't change the name though.

The OP is wanting the name Megan pronounced in a way that's adopting a silly accent for most people OR she's going to invent a non name.

HeadintheiClouds · 14/09/2019 14:12

Char-luh? Confused No. It’s always Charlie.

Sunshineys · 14/09/2019 14:06

It's a bit like Charlie can sounds like char-lee or char-luh in different accents but the name is still Charlie.

Chat-luh as in Charloo?! Confused

Never heard Charlie other than Char lie (lee)

ColdCottage · 14/09/2019 13:15

I'd say too weird.

People will get used to how you pronounce it and when she is older she will let them know too.

Cyberworrier · 14/09/2019 12:51

@frith to rhyme with ray gun, snort

Frith2013 · 14/09/2019 12:46

@Awwlookatmybabyspider to rhyme with Ray gun?

Awful.

LolaSmiles · 14/09/2019 12:39

The name is Megan. Megan may sound different in different accents but the name is Megan.

It's a bit like Charlie can sounds like char-lee or char-luh in different accents but the name is still Charlie.

Anna can sounds like Ah-Nah or an-nuh. The name hasn't changed.

It sounds like you want a non-name and for everyone to put on a silly accent for the name

Sunshineys · 14/09/2019 12:28

Megan = Meg an

Maegan or Maygan = May gan

So if you want the second pronunciation, go with either of the second spellings.

diddlediddle · 14/09/2019 12:06

Utterly ridiculous and naff

Heyboyo · 14/09/2019 11:59

Don’t ask mumsnet. They hate Americans. People pronounce words wrong all the time. Lots of mumsnetters put R’s in words that aren’t there so I don’t know why they would be bashing this pronounciation. If you like it, go with it

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 14/09/2019 11:55

@Frith2013. She wants it pronounced Maygan. Hence the spelling

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 14/09/2019 11:44

Lay with a g & leg are identical to you??

Yep. Northern Ireland.

Frith2013 · 14/09/2019 10:19

It’ll always be pronounced May-gan, which is ridiculous.

Just spell it properly.

thebakerwithboobs · 14/09/2019 07:34

@AverageMummy say it again but in a Northern Irish accent and bingo!

OP, a million reasons not to do this. Your child's school mates will take two seconds to jumble it and call her Gayman for a start. This spelling is right up there with Ezzmay for me.

AverageMummy · 14/09/2019 07:27

@JoxerGoesToStuttgart you pronounce them the same ?? What accent is that? I keep trying them in different sounds & just can’t work out who they’d be the same for?

Lay with a g & leg are identical to you??

Icantthinkofanynewnames · 13/09/2019 19:44

I don’t like it, sorry OP

Antonin · 13/09/2019 19:30

Well don’t mo e to NZ or Australia where Megan is generally pronounced mee - gan !
