This name seems to have become popular lately but, people can't seem to grasp how to pronounce it...
It's AARON as in air-on (biblical).
Fools say ARRON as in A-Ron.
It's simple English!
Can't understand why they do this.
This thread is in response to a member who said that it's pronounced ARRON: were that to be the case, then AARON would be spelt ARRON!

Any Aarons near me (Dublin) are pronounced Arron and theres loads over here! Recently came across an Aran.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/09/2019 19:53

The only Aaron I know is pronounced
A-ron. It’s a nice name

dementedpixie · 12/09/2019 19:53

Do you go to a bazaar or a bazair?

2perkins · 12/09/2019 19:48

And that - in my near 70 years on this planet - is the ONLY exception that breaks the rule: and that being because of the place of origin of the word!

OP posts:
Eminybob · 12/09/2019 19:48

Not aired-vark

dementedpixie · 12/09/2019 19:48

I have never ever heard it as Airon. Maybe it's because I'm in Scotland?

tempresistance · 12/09/2019 19:48

I have an Aaron and he is pronounced Arun, we like to call him A A Ron to annoy him Grin

howells · 12/09/2019 19:47

I’m with you OP!

I considered using Aaron as a name for ds1 but dh vetoed it. Quite glad now as I would have found it very annoying if people had pronounced it Arran. I had never heard it mis-pronounced like that at the time (18 years ago) - it seems to be a recent thing.

2perkins · 12/09/2019 19:46

Oh, my bad - if it's on Hot Fuzz it MUST be correct!

dementedpixie · 12/09/2019 19:45

Ard vark

NorthEndGal · 12/09/2019 19:45

Married to an Aaron pronounced Air Un
And he runs my errands
Grin

2perkins · 12/09/2019 19:45

Because every plum on TV says it that way - from newscasters to quiz hosts - and they feel obliged to follow suit,.
Just out of curiosity - how would YOU pronounce "aardvark"?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 12/09/2019 19:40

When has english ever been logical btw!?

dementedpixie · 12/09/2019 19:40

I know one Aaron and also pronounced as Arron. You dont get to decide how everyone pronounces a particular name

2perkins · 12/09/2019 19:37

I assume that they are "trendies"?
Aaron is a biblical name - and since RE at school some 60 years ago - it has been pronounced "air on".
Aside from that, it is grammatically wrong to pronounce it ARRON - as it follows NO logic in language!

AverageMummy · 12/09/2019 18:57

Air-on is how everyone used to pronounce it but given the Scottish Arran & the increase in different names spellings pronunciations its unsurprising it’s changed. English language evolves & changes all the time.

SconeofDestiny · 12/09/2019 18:54

It's A-Ron. Irish. You're welcome. Grin

pikapikachu · 12/09/2019 18:52

Is it regional? I've only heard Air-on once and Arrun hundreds of times.

Flamingo84 · 12/09/2019 18:52

Haven’t you seen Hot Fuzz OP? Aaron A. Aaronson pronounced it Arron!

Bobthefishermanswife · 12/09/2019 18:48

I'm on both sides of this.
I worked with a guy called Aaron and it was pronounced air-on.
But I also went to school with a lad called Aaron and it was pronounced Arun.

Pr1nc3ssP3rdy · 12/09/2019 18:48

Both Aaron's I know pronounce it 'Air- un' and I much prefer that pronunciation, I agree. However I don't think that there is one 'correct' pronunciation...

BertrandRussell · 12/09/2019 18:48

When I say Aaron is pronounced as spelt, I mean Air-on. I could, perhaps, have made more sense!

Bunnybigears · 12/09/2019 18:47

All the Aaron's I have know going back to the 80s have been pronounced Arun. I liked the name but didnt go for it for my kids as I dont like the Air ron pronunciation.

BertrandRussell · 12/09/2019 18:46

Biblical/Jewish name Aaron, pronounced as spelt. Modern name/Scottish island Arran- pronounced as spelt.

ohmysoul · 12/09/2019 18:46

Aaron is pronounced arron. Not every word or name in the English language is spelt the way it sounds.
