Winifred

Thoughts on Winifred shortened to Winnie.

I imagine most won't like it but I can just picture a little toddler Winifred. Not sure it would be liked as a teenager but Winnie surely wouldn't stand out amongst the Connie's, Millie's, Frankie's etc

Dreadful

soundsystem · 12/09/2019 19:05

I like it, and it's on our list too.

IsadoraQuagmire · 12/09/2019 19:01

It's lovely. I have a aunt called Winnie.

Icantthinkofanynewnames · 12/09/2019 19:01

LOVE Winnie! Not so sure about Winifred... I wouldn’t be brave enough to use it but Winnie is fab x

Minty82 · 12/09/2019 18:56

I know two small Winnies - one is just Winnie and one is Winifred. I wouldn’t choose it myself but don’t see anything wrong with it! The full name is fabulously 1930s maiden auntish/Malory Towersesque, and the shortening is sweet.

StrictlyComeMarie · 12/09/2019 18:47

Yes go for it!

Orangeleavez · 12/09/2019 18:12

Sorry but this is simply a hideous name with no redeeming features.
It is frumpy and ugly sounding and a noise a horse makes if you nn it.
I have no idea how it could be seen as a nice name.

DramaAlpaca · 12/09/2019 18:03

Just awful. I couldn't inflict that on a child.

Chickydoo · 12/09/2019 17:31

I adore it!!!!! Gorgeous, sweet.
Wanted it for DD but vetoed by DH, although he was crumbling towards the end, nearly got my way.

Bonkersblond · 12/09/2019 17:26

Just no, was my grandmothers name, for extra effect add Gertrude as a middle name, for years I was told these were my middle names after my GM, not quite sure if this was a joke or to keep GM quiet that her name was being carried on, I can not tell you how I hated them.

WaynettaSlobOnTheSchoolRun · 12/09/2019 17:23

I know one in a toddler group I go to. (Herts, if it makes a difference). It's ok.

AwkwardSquad · 12/09/2019 17:20

I love it, I think it’s an excellent name. But just in case you’d like an alternative, how about Bronwyn? That could still give you Winnie as a shortened version.

RoseMartha · 12/09/2019 17:19

I also dislike it.

Like @LarkDescending , I too had an elderly relative who had that for a first name and always used her middle name instead.

Howtotrainyourhamster · 12/09/2019 17:17

Don’t like it, it’s just not a pretty sound. One of my kids has a Winnie in their class and try as I might I still don’t like it. It’s a name that is not even redeemed from ugliness by association with a child ‘making it their own.’

bridgetreilly · 12/09/2019 17:13

I love it! But I would use Freddy as the nn.

IHaveBrilloHair · 12/09/2019 17:12

Terrible.

ClaraThePigeon · 12/09/2019 17:11

In so shocked people don’t like this name. Don’t listen Op. go for i

Why are you shocked? It's hideous. And who are you to tell the OP who to ignore?

Drogosnextwife · 12/09/2019 17:06

That's my mums name, with the shortened version used as her name. I really wouldn't.

ladycarlotta · 12/09/2019 16:56

I think it's lovely. I wouldn't choose it myself but I think it's kooky and sweet and if someone I knew called their child that I'd definitely be quite impressed! Can totally picture a little Winifred.

sunshine5997 · 12/09/2019 16:45

I love the name! Go for it OP

MissHenty · 12/09/2019 16:44

In so shocked people don’t like this name. Don’t listen Op. go for it

Spoonsmum · 12/09/2019 16:36

I wanted Winnie but was overruled. I love that name.

FlashAHHHH · 12/09/2019 16:35

Winifred is awful. Winnie, it's cute but kids might start calling her Poo which wouldn't be nice for her.

Cyberworrier · 12/09/2019 16:35

I like Winifred! Have to admit I’m not so keen on Winnie, but I like Freddie for a girl as a nn. Or Win, as PPs great aunt!

HepzibahGreen · 12/09/2019 16:34

I bloody love it! It makes me think of a plucky WAF in the War in red lipstick and a uniform. I can also picture a very cool 17 year old Winifred. She could be Winnie or Freddie too. Do it!
Also, Winnie the witch is ace.
