We've found out we're expecting a third girl (!!) and we are really struggling for a name this time.

I like Constance but DH has vetoed. He wants Mary or Madeleine but I hate both.

Help us please!

Why is the correct pronunciation of Sophia "so-fye-ah" and Maria "mar-eye-uh"? Are they completely unrelated to Sophie and Marie?

@daisypond I had no idea!

Jellycat00 · 11/09/2019 08:54

Sophia is lovely, but so popular now!

Abigail or Rebecca would be my choice.
Otherwise Genevieve or Laura.

daisypond · 11/09/2019 08:51

Pcosmama - no, so-fee-a isn’t traditionally right in the UK, though it’s taking over as a pronunciation. Just like Maria shouldn’t be pronounced Ma-ree-a but Ma-rye-a.

knittedgoldfish · 11/09/2019 08:46

It was previously commonly So-fy-a (and some people do still pronounce it this way eg Sophia Money-Coutts). These days I think So-fee-a is far more usual and so we would go with that. I prefer Sophia to Sophie with either pronunciation.

I would pronounce Sophia Soff-eye-ah, and Sofia Soff-ee-ah. I know lots of people with little Sophias/Sofias (all Soff-ee-ah).
I prefer Sophie.

Isn't Sophia always pronounced so-fee-a 🤔

How about Harriet, Isobel, Charlotte, Hannah, Alice, Annie, Jessica?

daisypond · 11/09/2019 08:16

Anna was my first thought.
Sophia is nice but how are you going to pronounce it- So-fire? It annoys me when people say So-fee-a. You could have Sophie.

Emmapeeler · 11/09/2019 08:02

I have a girl with one of your names and considered Rose, Matilda, Emma, Lucy or Alice for another. (We had a boy!).

Current front runner is Sophia. DH also keen on Matilda. We both like Philippa but hadn't considered the strong Middleton connection given we already have Catherine.
