Rupert as a boys name

Feedmylambs · 05/09/2019 09:58

I’ve always loved the name and it was the only nam I thought of during pregnancy for my little boy, so far the name has had negative reactions from generation above me ( that’s a posh name, Jilly Cooper character, army slang)
But opinions from my own generation seem more positive - I like the think name because I don’t know any Ruperts, but when I found out Rupert Was the name of the chap who played Ron in Harry Potter I thought it was a nice name!
I know there’s also Rupert bear but that’s cute and if i avoided kids tv show names I wouldn’t never find a name!
Please give me opinions for or against this name?!

Definitely no Teds or Teddy's here.

ItWillAllBeOkInTheEnd · 05/09/2019 12:01

MissHenty I think you are missing the context here in that the OP lives in an area where they speak Welsh first not English.

MissHenty · 05/09/2019 11:59

If people are going to make fun of Rupert being a bear (which they wouldn’t anyway as that’s such an old reference), how are all the Ted and Teddy’s in the class going to feel? 🙄
Rupert is a lovely traditional name - I love it

ItWillAllBeOkInTheEnd · 05/09/2019 11:57

I'm in a Welsh speaking area and I know no Ruperts. I think Roo is a cute name and one he could use for life if he hated Rupert or had problems with it. My kids are still toddlers but I played safe and gave them names I hoped wouldn't cause problems as I remember to well how hard it can be to be too different in any way in secondary school.

MissHenty · 05/09/2019 11:51

Ludicrous to suggest that a child with a top 100 name will be “teased mercilessly”. Wtf!

A bit like saying “Nick” will be teased because it rhymes with Dick. Ridiculous

Heh1991 · 05/09/2019 11:51

I like the name Rupert. I think it does have posh connotations but I think many nice boys names do- Edward, Charles, George, William- all because of the royal family so for my taste in names I think it's unavoidable. Agree with a poster above that Roo is a cute nickname and its more unusual than most boys names.

ItWillAllBeOkInTheEnd · 05/09/2019 11:48

MissHenty the OP says she is in North Wales which is where they all speak Welsh and go to Welsh speaking schools. Rupert is an unusual name in the area that is predominantly Welsh names. Context is different to the 100 most popular names. Smile

Hiphopopotamous · 05/09/2019 11:36

I loved it but DH said no.

It's a bit marmite.

Blessedwithboys · 05/09/2019 11:33

I love it!

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 05/09/2019 11:30

Sorry but I think it's hideous. It just sounds very wet and foppish.

MissHenty · 05/09/2019 11:30

“Teased relentlessly in the North” for being called Rupert??

It’s nearly in the top 100 names! I think some people here are very out of touch with the current crop of names. I’ve met a Percy, a Clarence, a few Wilfred’s. The idea that “Rupert” would get teased is a bit silly really.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 05/09/2019 11:26

Love it.

Feedmylambs · 05/09/2019 11:25

There are welsh names round here but also lots of English names as said above, in fact I believe Noah is the most popular name for boys currently in many counties here! My friends little boy attends a very welsh school and there’s lots of weird and wonderful English names there! (And they speak welsh!)

If it's a welsh language speaking area with lots of welsh names then I could see how it may be an issue for him as he gets older.

Cbeebiesrehab · 05/09/2019 11:06

Teased and tormented endlessly for the name Rupert. Where on earth do you live? It’s a totally normal name.
I really like it OP.

Feedmylambs · 05/09/2019 10:58

I’m in north walesbut lots of popular English names here such as Freddie, Noah, Alfie, Oliver, Elijah, etc. I think names like Alfie and Freddie are lovely but I wanted a name that could grow with him a.g. Roo when he’s little and Rupert as an adult, whereas Alfie would be Alfred or Alf and I don’t like them!

It’s horrible I’m sorry.

Astronica · 05/09/2019 10:52

I love it.

Poppydaisys · 05/09/2019 10:50

What's teaseworthy about Rupert compared to Robert or Reuben? Especially for a child?Confused

PrincessHoneysuckle · 05/09/2019 10:47

Here in the north hed get teased relentlessly

LetsSplashMummy · 05/09/2019 10:46

I think it really varies by area. I know lots of little boys who go by Roo, but they are Rhuaridh or Reuben, Rupert would be a less popular surprise (like finding out a Will is really Wilberforce and not William). However, my family down south would say that about Rhuaridh and take Rupert in their stride. Where are you based OP?

However, I've seen kids with similar names, Percy, Walter, Cuthbert... carry them off - so even if you are in an area where it isn't liked - your child will still be fine being a Rupert.

MarshaBradyo · 05/09/2019 10:44

I love Rupert but I just used it as the middle name in the end.

Poppydaisys · 05/09/2019 10:43

Where I'm from in the north east he would be teased and tormented endlessly.

I'm glad the parents and teachers around here don't allow such behaviour Shock!

Where do you live?

MissHenty · 05/09/2019 10:42

Yes Rupert is lovely and would fit in nicely amongst the other names around today. It’s not that common but is rare enough for it to feel a bit different but not wacky. Go for it!! It’s perfect x

mordecaithomas · 05/09/2019 10:29

I have a ten year old Rupert. Got a lot of shit for it back then but seems to be making a slight comeback these days.
