Rupert as a boys name

Feedmylambs · 05/09/2019 09:58

I’ve always loved the name and it was the only nam I thought of during pregnancy for my little boy, so far the name has had negative reactions from generation above me ( that’s a posh name, Jilly Cooper character, army slang)
But opinions from my own generation seem more positive - I like the think name because I don’t know any Ruperts, but when I found out Rupert Was the name of the chap who played Ron in Harry Potter I thought it was a nice name!
I know there’s also Rupert bear but that’s cute and if i avoided kids tv show names I wouldn’t never find a name!
Please give me opinions for or against this name?!

I like it.

But I really don't like the nickname Rupes HmmConfused

sorrythisusernameistaken · 05/09/2019 20:37

It's on my list but my husband won't have it 😭 Rupes is such a cute NN too

MissHenty · 05/09/2019 20:34

@MarshaBradyo lovely middle name. Yes you’re right about this thread x

percheron67 · 05/09/2019 20:14

Great choice.

KronksSpinachPuffs · 05/09/2019 19:40

I think it's a bit too posh for my liking if I'm being really honest!

MarshaBradyo · 05/09/2019 18:46

That was ten years ago though

MarshaBradyo · 05/09/2019 18:45

Going by this thread then

Tbh I kinda fluffed it as just went with it for middle name

MissHenty · 05/09/2019 18:38

@MarshaBradyo it can’t be that marmite - there were nearly 600 kids named Rupert last year - it’s massively gaining in popularity and about to enter the top 100

MarshaBradyo · 05/09/2019 18:05

It is a marmite name for sure

Ohyesiam · 05/09/2019 17:36

If you like it go for it.
Some people will love it, some will hate it, but it’s hiw you feel about it that counts.

Jaguar2017 · 05/09/2019 17:28

Rupert! - is this a wind-up? Poor child having to live with that name.

aliensprig · 05/09/2019 17:21

@Feedmylambs I'm also in North Wales and would say the majority of people in this particular area have English names. I think it depends on the county, I assume towards places like Blaenau you'd have predominantly Welsh names in schools. We'd love to give our little one a Welsh name but I don't think it would be received well in the family (we're not Welsh in the slightest but learning).

Roselilly36 · 05/09/2019 16:30

Sorry I don’t like it.

SwizzelStick · 05/09/2019 16:26

Rupert is awful.

99bb · 05/09/2019 14:52

Love it

daisypond · 05/09/2019 13:10

You could always go for Robert - it’s the same name with the same roots and is due a revival. But I do like Rupert.

MissHenty · 05/09/2019 13:04

@Poppydaisys yes I remember a couple of years back everyone on Mumsnet putting someone off using the name “Ralph” as it meant pe*is in a Judy Bloom book or something. Now Ralphbis very mainstream and no kids even know about Judy Bloom! I often wonder if the mum regrets not just choosing her favourite name! 30+ year olds on Mumsnet seem to have a totally different view to children in playgrounds

sep30 · 05/09/2019 12:38

My absolute favourite name!

ItWillAllBeOkInTheEnd · 05/09/2019 12:27

I'm Welsh speaking too . Your choice totally for your child's name but it's always difficult choosing names as it's a name your child has to live with. Seems such a responsibility doesn't it. Pob lwc Smile

whattodowith · 05/09/2019 12:25

I love it.

Poppydaisys · 05/09/2019 12:15

The only teased name at our primary school i(that I've ever heard of) is actually William with Willy!

And parents still name their sons William.

Poppydaisys · 05/09/2019 12:13

A few years ago, Sebastian and Quentin were described as 'unusual' and tease worthy - I know kids with both these names and no one bats an eyelid!

Kids are far more accepting of different names than some adults on this thread.

MissHenty · 05/09/2019 12:10

I think where we sometimes go wrong is we imagine an “Albert” in our own playground from 30 years ago. Names have really changed since then. I actually knew a Rupert at school (was much rarer name back then) and never heard him teased over name.
The only person I remember being teased was “Abi” who was called “abi national bank” - you really can’t predict what names children will pick on. Unusual or not!

MissHenty · 05/09/2019 12:08

@ItWillAllBeOkInTheEnd ok sorry missed context! It’s a top 100 (almost) name in England and Wales so I still don’t see any problem. I know you can access the name data by region so maybe OP could do that. Compare to other names that are rising in popularity.
We have a wolf and bear at school and no teasing from what I gather.
I remember a few years ago MN was saying an Albert would get teased at school. Now it’s completely mainstream!

Feedmylambs · 05/09/2019 12:07

Thanks everyone so far for your views - it’s a very marmite name isn’t it but I think I’ll akways find people for and against any name - everyone has their own subjective views!
@ItWillAllBeOkInTheEnd I won’t say exactly where in north wales I am but as a welsh speaker and this child will be bilingual and have a welsh middle name, I’m surprised how many English names are in the schools here - and this is apparently the list of most popular names in wales

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-49510405

In my own experience there’s lots of unusual /posh/popular English names where I am despite it being a very welsh area!
