Advice on naming - dreamt of name

OnNo1 · 01/09/2019 17:26

A bit weird, I am not given to dreams or superstition much.

Just before my DS was born, I dreamt that we had named him a particular name. However, we are settling on a name for him so we can register him and it's a different name from my dream. Both names would suit him fine.

Has anyone else had this? What did you go for? How did it turn out?

I know it's a bit crazy so feel free to post opinion too ;)

AverageMummy if you change it within the first year the ‘original’ name is removed completely and there is no reference to it on the BC at all. It’s only if changed after a year the ‘original’ name remains on the BC.

AverageMummy · 03/09/2019 10:08

@Hecateh that’s not completely accurate - the birth certificate is formalised early on - I think legally babies have to be registered by 6 weeks old. You can change a baby’s name up to one year (if not baptised) but it’s an amendment on the original birth certificate - so both the former name and the new name appear on the birth certificate.

The special sign thing made me laugh - the foetus won’t even recognise their own name till they are 3 months old but they’re signalling it in advance?! Hmm

I am pregnant and recently dreamt I gave birth to a guinea pig - so I sure hope it isn’t a sign of things to come!

I second everything @Jellycat00 said.

Jellycat00 · 03/09/2019 09:49

I don't think it's a special sign. Dreams are usually just a result of the brain sorting through information, ideas and scenarios. You've probably spent a lot of time thinking of names, and doing it just before falling asleep, and that's resulted in name ideas popping up as dreams.
I do understand how you feel - is it a sign? - but i really think you should forget about the dream and choose a name that you both love. Smile

When I was first pregnant I dreamt of a name for my baby... Rosa. Had a boy, though!

Fourteen years later, I did have a baby Rose; nothing to do with the dream, I don’t think.

However we did name our dog after a dog in DDs dream!

Just use whichever name you like best, OP.

diddlediddle · 02/09/2019 19:40

I've had lots of dreams about things that I wouldn't dream of recreating in real life 😂 dreams don't really mean anything! It's not some special sign. Just choose the name you both prefer!

IckleBear · 02/09/2019 14:01

I would go for the name you've chosen that suits him.

sugarbum · 01/09/2019 22:27

Long before I had my boys I dreamt that I was the mother of two boys. Adam and Gabriel they were called. I said this to dh as I liked those names..still do in fact. But he hated them. And most other names to be honest. We didn't call them those names...sorry that.doesnt.help.does it

Crunchymum · 01/09/2019 22:19

What are the names?

OnNo1 · 01/09/2019 21:56

@Hecateh thanks I didn't know that. I suppose we can choose one and if it doesn't work out we can just change it. I know there are several cultures where the child isn't named until 3 or 6 etc months after birth so I guess this is how it's done.

You can change his name any time up to a year after he is born. My nephew's 3rd baby had 3 names used interchangeably for the first 10 months before they decided for definite which was on his birth certificate

OnNo1 · 01/09/2019 21:13

@noahsmum2016 the family name is one we have chosen, naming him after a relative. The second middle name is my surname as I didn't take my husband's name (very long and hard to spell).

noahsmum2016 · 01/09/2019 20:30

You say middle names are already picked but could you not lose one of those? As using the name you've picked with your husband and the name you've dreamed of will have much more meaning to him when he grows up compared to a family name, as its personal and special to him.

AnonymousMugwumpery · 01/09/2019 19:54

My mother had a dream that we were having a 10.5 lb boy called [NAME], and told me because she thought it was funny. We called him that and he was nearly 10.5lb too.

OnNo1 · 01/09/2019 19:47

The middles names are already chosen due to family or could do both as first and middle. He'd end up with three middle names if we used both names.
@Awwlookatmybabyspider that's the little part of me that's thinking about it. I blame my Irish ancestors (even though I have to go back 150 years to find them).
@noahsmum2016 it's less about what the names are as both are fine. It's more of a superstition/spiritual/existential(?) thing.

I had a day dream of 2 x dd's with 2 particular names. Prob not ones I would have chosen tbh! I did use the names!!

MeMeMeYou · 01/09/2019 19:25

I dreamt a name - Felix George. I didn’t really like it irl although the dream made me consider it for a few moments. I named my son something totally different!

SquintEastwood · 01/09/2019 19:23

@Awwlookatmybabyspider, I didn't think of that - quite like the idea that he's chosen his own name!

SquintEastwood · 01/09/2019 19:22

Choose whichever you prefer and would be happiest with long term.

What are the names - would they work as first and middle name?

Congratulations on your DS btw - whatever his name is :o

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/09/2019 19:20

I’m very spiritual, so I think It’s him tellling you He’s named himself. It’s surprising how many babies do that

BikeRunSki · 01/09/2019 19:18

Use one as a first name and one as a middle name?

Jamhandprints · 01/09/2019 19:17

I dreamed my DDs name then found out I was having a boy...but used DDs name 7 years later for DD! I felt like I had to, but also loved the name.

Hellie36 · 01/09/2019 19:17

I dreamt my second son was a boy and called Ivo just before I had him! That's what we called him & it totally suits him, it was meant to be!

TweakMyHouse · 01/09/2019 19:15

I dreamt a name for both my DCs.
First one I used it - he unexpectedly looked like dream baby (very blonde instead of expected dark).
Second one I didn’t. Didn’t like how the name looked written down. Was torn though as had named first with dream name
