Shepherd. What are your thoughts? Is it usable as a first or middle name?

I'm thinking of names like Callum Shepherd? Is it too out there?

Cooom bye Shep!

moonpiggle · 29/08/2019 20:41

Just silly. C'mon behave.

saffy1234 · 29/08/2019 20:33

I actually like Archer Smile

pikapikachu · 29/08/2019 20:30

Just seen that Shep was a Blue Peter dog. That's probably where I picked it up (I'm born in the 70s)

pikapikachu · 29/08/2019 20:27

I like a lot of surnames as first names but Shepherd makes me think of dogs, pies and sheep. Makes me want to say baaaaaa. Shep in particular sounds like a dog's name.

MikeUniformMike · 29/08/2019 20:26

Butcher?

Frith2013 · 29/08/2019 19:59

No. Very silly.

I used to have a dog called Shep.

LoonyLunaLoo · 29/08/2019 19:30

Nope.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 29/08/2019 19:25

It’s not a name. It’s a job description.

So are Taylor and Tyler. Plenty of those running about.
That said though on a personal level I don’t like it. If it was used as a mn. I’d assume it was either yours of DH surname.

IdahoGreen · 29/08/2019 18:53

Like Cooper or Harper or Mason or Carter or Archer or Chandler or Hunter etc, it's a great surname but a godawful first name.

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 29/08/2019 18:49

And also being called Shep or Sheppy all the time

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 29/08/2019 18:49

It was also my maiden name. Hated it.

Always a shepherd never a Mary. Every teacher thought they were funny Hmm
'Where's your sheep, shepherd?' asked x10000 in every school along with the oh so glam nickname of Shepherds Pie.

Just. No.

Jemima232 · 29/08/2019 18:48

It's a surname OP.

Just don't do this to your child.

RebeccaRae · 29/08/2019 18:45

It's pretty bad, sorry!

ChicCroissant · 29/08/2019 18:45

Get down Shep was the first thing that came to my mind as well!

AverageMummy · 29/08/2019 18:43

It would lend itself well to his business ventures:
Shepherd’s Pie shop
Shepherd’s Dog Walking
Shepherd’s Bush Trims
Shepherd’s Security: watching your flock by night

detectivebird · 29/08/2019 17:30

it's my surname and i get called shep all the time. i hate it.

Pieceofpurplesky · 29/08/2019 17:28

This is my son Shepherd Chef Blogger the third.
No OP

BethanyGilbert · 29/08/2019 17:19

I’ve previously taught an Archer. I like it. And Cooper. Me and DH have separate “job names” as surnames though.

Poetryinaction · 29/08/2019 17:18

Well we have Miller and Mason.
Look at the ONS baby names that came out today for less used names if you want inspiration. Though a better known name might be nicer.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 29/08/2019 17:15

Farrier? Archer? Cobbler? Social Media Manager?

viques · 29/08/2019 17:15

Francis Crawford Thankyou! I thought that as well but didn't think the Op would get it.

viques · 29/08/2019 17:14

There are very few occupations that lend themselves to being names, like Cooper for example.

Most don't, and Shepherd is one of them. Like Cowman, Ploughman , Milkmaid and Vet they just don't work, not even when hidden as middle names.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 29/08/2019 17:10

May Sherpa or Wainright.
