Shepherd. What are your thoughts? Is it usable as a first or middle name?

I'm thinking of names like Callum Shepherd? Is it too out there?

Just seen that Shep was a Blue Peter dog. That's probably where I picked it up (I'm born in the 70s)

I like a lot of surnames as first names but Shepherd makes me think of dogs, pies and sheep. Makes me want to say baaaaaa. Shep in particular sounds like a dog's name.

It’s not a name. It’s a job description.

So are Taylor and Tyler. Plenty of those running about.
That said though on a personal level I don’t like it. If it was used as a mn. I’d assume it was either yours of DH surname.

Like Cooper or Harper or Mason or Carter or Archer or Chandler or Hunter etc, it's a great surname but a godawful first name.

It was also my maiden name. Hated it.

Always a shepherd never a Mary. Every teacher thought they were funny Hmm
'Where's your sheep, shepherd?' asked x10000 in every school along with the oh so glam nickname of Shepherds Pie.

I’ve previously taught an Archer. I like it. And Cooper. Me and DH have separate “job names” as surnames though.

Well we have Miller and Mason.
Look at the ONS baby names that came out today for less used names if you want inspiration. Though a better known name might be nicer.

There are very few occupations that lend themselves to being names, like Cooper for example.

Most don't, and Shepherd is one of them. Like Cowman, Ploughman , Milkmaid and Vet they just don't work, not even when hidden as middle names.
