MNHQ here: Which baby name tribe do you belong to?

AnnaCMumsnet · 29/08/2019 16:10

Hello, MNHQ here

Today the ONS have released their top baby names for 2018. (Spoiler: Oliver and Olivia both still hold the number one slots).

To coincide with the release we have been analysing our baby name boards and identified 13 baby name tribes - from the Tried, trusted, traditionalists (who prefer names like Oliver and Olivia, which top the ONS chart), to Classy classicists (Ptomely and Persephone) and Super moderns (Jaxon and Bear).

Then, using statistical textual analysis techniques, Mumsnet’s data science team analysed more than 4,000 threads and 170,000 posts to flesh out each tribe and uncover connections between them.

Like Ptomely? Then you might like Nigel. Like Bear? Then you might also be talking about Jeremy.

We've got lots more examples, including pretty graphics.

So which tribe do you fall into?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
MrsReader · 29/08/2019 21:30

None of the ones in the article, so I'll make up my own- girly and frilly

steppemum · 29/08/2019 21:25

wait a minute

flower power includes

Elizabeth, Grace, Mabel, Alice, Beatrice???? Why?

Winecheesesleep · 29/08/2019 21:24

Royal Babies for me Smile

steppemum · 29/08/2019 21:21

I don't fall into your sets.

Love some divinely inspired, dislike others intensely.
Love some Grandparent chic, can't bear others (Stanley is particularly awful)
Love one or two of the flowers names, find others unbearable twee.

The group I fall into is this:

  1. must be a real name (I'm definitely not a modern)
  2. must not be in top 100
  3. Must have normal spelling
  4. Must not be boringly obvious - like George

So vaguely traditional but only unusual will do.

By the way, how did Peaches get into the Royals group????

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 29/08/2019 21:19

I’m not sure I’m represented here, I think my daughters would fall under the “posh names you’d give your daughters in the 1970s” tribe

YahBasic · 29/08/2019 21:18

Divinely Inspired & Cautious Celt.

Would be good to see the diagrams for all the categories.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 29/08/2019 21:16

I’m not a cautious Celt, I’m a full on, dont care who can’t pronounce it or if it looks like a load of scrabble tiles proper old Irish names tribe member. Grin

Second favourite are royals and grandparents.

ImportantWater · 29/08/2019 21:16

Well both of my children’s names and my name are under Royal, so I guess that is what we are, although I don’t know how that is different to Traditional.

Kyvia · 29/08/2019 21:14

Super moderns, with most popular names including Bear, Jaxon, Leilani and Canary

Wtf, no way has anyone named their child Canary, let alone it being a ‘most popular’ name. Bullshit MNHQ.

Lavenderblues · 29/08/2019 21:11

Maybe classy classicists, if I had to choose...

Lavenderblues · 29/08/2019 21:10

Mine don't fall into any of your sets either.

LeafyWood · 29/08/2019 21:07

Mine don’t seem to fall into any of those categories - and I wouldn’t say their names are that unusual either Confused

WinterHare · 29/08/2019 20:32

I can't believe that anyone has actually named their child 'Canary' GrinGrinGrin

Cautious Celt, Hidden Gem and a bit traditional here.

Karmarama · 29/08/2019 20:19

How is everyone else seeing all the group's/tribes? I can only see three of them Confused

hubbletelescope · 29/08/2019 20:13

Divinely inspired (but not from the Bible) here.

Really interesting to see the names grouped. I can see the names of friends children tend to be in the same group.

twolobsters · 29/08/2019 20:13

Disney Divas which I resent, given she's named after a natural phenomenon and not a bloody Disney princess Hmm

CoffeeRunner · 29/08/2019 20:12

I like some from each set.

What does that say about me?

Fickle? Easily pleased? Permanently confused? Grin

LauraPalmersBodybag · 29/08/2019 20:09

Pretty pleased I don’t fall into any

MrsBertBibby · 29/08/2019 20:08

None of them.

ALoadOfTwaddle · 29/08/2019 20:04

I like the grandparent chic ones. But not all of them.

Frith2013 · 29/08/2019 20:00

There’s no such thing as a baby tribe.

Whoops75 · 29/08/2019 18:56

Normal names for me too

Karmarama · 29/08/2019 18:56

I can only see 3 graphics so I don't know what tribe I fall into! Are there more complete lists or all the graphics anywhere?

Walnutwhipster · 29/08/2019 18:53

Royal, traditionalist and grandparent chic.

pallisers · 29/08/2019 18:49

royal babies and cautious celt
