Thoughts on the name Emmeline for a girl?

Yes I was going for Emma-leen pronunciation! I agree it’s a beautiful classic name and love the Pankhurst connotation. Didn’t realise it was coming back into fashion potentially though. Thanks for all advice and so glad that (mostly) it’s loved!

I think PP was thinking of emmental?

AverageMummy · 28/08/2019 22:06

I’m confused how Emmeline could sound like cheese ?!

june2007 · 28/08/2019 21:58

Emmaline where have you been, "I went to the queen and she says my hands are perfectly clean" Or something like that. (AA Milne.) I knew an Emmaline at school if you like it why not.

BeanBag7 · 28/08/2019 21:36

Its lovely but Emily is one of the most popular names, I think Emmeline will always be mistaken for Emily

joystir59 · 28/08/2019 21:34

Brilliant strong name, reminds me of the suffragette.

Xpost momo!

Emmeline
Has not been seen
For more than a week.
She slipped between
The two tall treees at the end of the green...
We all went after her. "Emmeline!"

“Emmeline,
I didn't mean — I only said that your hands weren't clean."
We went to the trees at the end of the green…
But Emmeline
Was not to be seen.

Emmeline
Came slipping between
The two tall trees at the end of the green. We all ran up to her. "Emmeline! Where have you been?
Where have you been?
Why, it's not more than week!"
And Emmeline Said, "Sillies, I went and saw the Queen. She says my hands are purfickly clean!"

  • A.A Milne

Lovely name!

tabbiemoo · 28/08/2019 21:13

Lovely name but I always think of it as Emma -line not Emma-leen
Nn Emmy is very cute

hungryhippie · 28/08/2019 21:12

I really love this name and I would have used it if my children had been girls. Such a nice sound to it.

momo01 · 28/08/2019 21:08

Crikey, sorry for the typos, the website I copied from didn't proofread (and neither did I)

momo01 · 28/08/2019 21:06

In addition to the Pankhurst reference, this A. A. Milne poem is cute:

Emmeline
Has not been seen
For more than a week. She slipped between
The two tall treees at the end of the green...
We all went after her. "Emmeline!"

“Emmeline,
I didn't mean —
I only said that your hands weren't clean."
We went to the trees at the end of the green…
But Emmeline
Was not to be seen.

Emmeline
Came slipping between
The two tall trees at the end of the green.
We all ran up to her. "Emmeline!
Where have you been?
Where have you been?
Why, it's not more than week!" And Emmeline
Said, "Sillies, I went and saw the Queen.
She says my hands are purfickly clean!"

georgialondon · 28/08/2019 20:58

It's ok as long as you don't mind the song.

momo01 · 28/08/2019 20:55

It's beautiful and definitely Emma-leen. As in Emmeline Pankhurst.

Based on experience, some people will think it's Emily, but so what, that's a lovely name too. I try to enunciate, and if they get it wrong I just shrug and move on.

Skyejuly · 28/08/2019 15:34

Yes I spend my whole life saying 'not emily'

EmmiJay · 28/08/2019 15:23

Its like my DDs name. Love Emmeline. Be prepared to repeat it several times and practice spelling it out loud too lol

Kanga83 · 28/08/2019 15:22

Love it but only pronounced Emma-line, not Emma-leen

BohemianDream · 28/08/2019 15:19

Such a beautiful name it was on my list too, didn't get to use it.

Love it and love Emmy / Emme / Emmie nn too - great choice!

user1493494961 · 28/08/2019 14:23

Very pretty. Ignore the 'dated' comments.

ILoveAnOwl · 28/08/2019 12:40

Our daughter's name. Everyone hears it as Emily and then you have to either go with it or do a weird 'no, Emmeleeeeeeeen' kind of thing. I now avoid this by calling her Emmy.

I think it's a beautiful name (obviously!) and I hope she likes it as she gets older.

BabyMoonPie · 28/08/2019 12:12

My DD has Emmeline as a middle name. I sometimes wish it was her first name

kenandbarbie · 28/08/2019 12:05

Love it! Reminds me of the suffragette. Plus sounds lovely and is classic but not too popular.

Mintypea5 · 28/08/2019 11:55

Love it! Was on my short list. Really love Emmy was a nickname
