Girl's name challenge

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 22/08/2019 19:24

I've found so many fab names on these threads, hoping someone can help me find the right name for my first daughter. The challenge:

  • Has to be fairly unusual (her brother's name is very rare but an old English name)
  • No flower names
  • No feminine versions of male names eg Philippa, Erica etc
  • Nothing too girly (like Posy or Belle)
  • Middle name will be Genevieve
  • Surname begins with L, 3 syllables. So combined with the long middle name, it needs to be fairly short.

Suggestions please! Grin

OP Jocelyn is s great name. Work on your DH!

TequilaMockingbird0 · 07/09/2019 20:17

Quinn?
I love that it's a strong name, easy to spell but not overly popular.

GetTheGoodLookingGuy · 07/09/2019 20:06

Okay, here's some more:

Merle
Romola
Nesta
Winona
Hester
Adeline
Avis
Viola
Irma

These are the names of children I have met at playgroups which have struck me as a bit more unusual:

Sybilla with nn Billy
Olive
Cecily
Greta
Lavinia nn Livvy

Early 20th Centary girls' school stories are great for this sort of thing. I shall have to dig mine out - the favourites I can remember are Avelyn (I think it should be two syllables AVE-lin) and Althea.

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 07/09/2019 10:18

From previous suggestions, I like Matilda but it's too popular, and Jocelyn but DH not keen.

@ThatCurlyGirl No problem, I appreciate all the suggestions!

Too many to give individual feedback but it's a general 'no' to:

  • Old lady names eg Florence, Nora, Enid, Harriet etc
  • 'pretty' girl's names (like Meriel, sorry PP). Girls don't have to be pretty or have pretty names. Strong names better for me
  • Female versions of men's names
  • Names which I associate with weak women from history/ literature. Eg Lydia will always be that airhead from Pride & Prej.
  • Nothing in top 300 or so for popularity

I am aware that makes my search hard!

We are now leaning towards Elowyn with a 'y' ...

Ianthe (I know flower connotations but not sure everyone would think that)
Felicity
Verity
Harriet
Arabella
Florence
Beatrice
Nancy
Melody
Elodie
Eloise
Connie
Polly
Holly
Delilah
Enid
Lydia
June
Matilda
Cecily
Isolde
Mary
Lettice
Aria
Delphine
Isla
Leonie

Magdelen will almost certainly be nicknamed Maggie so I think it depends if you like that name too.

Thanks for coming back on and responding to posters with some thoughts on their suggestions, lots of these threads don't and I find it really interesting!

Carenza/Kerenza
Helena
Thea
Ursula

I am such a plonker
I’ve already suggested it Grin
Feel free to ignore me

RickOShay · 07/09/2019 07:31

What about Meriel?
I think it’s so pretty.

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 06/09/2019 09:31

I like Demelza but always makes me think of the character in Poldark. Meredith similarly of Grey's Anatomy.

Love Freya but it's just too popular. Lilith was on our list for ages till I googled the baby-snatching demon aspect Shock

At the moment we have Elowen, Elinor, Livia & Ismae as possibles.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 05/09/2019 16:31

Demelza? Came to mind as it's another old Cornish name like Elowen. I think it sounds great with Genevieve too...

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 05/09/2019 16:21

Meredith

ABitOTT · 04/09/2019 22:43

Love Elowen. My imaginary DC3 is now called this

AverageAvenger · 04/09/2019 18:58

Endellion
Olwen
Linnet
Marlowe
Morvern

NeverSayFreelance · 04/09/2019 17:13

I've just recently developed a liking for the name Eilonwy - similar to Elowen?

Or perhaps Elyon? That was a character in my favourite cartoon as a child and I've always liked it.

MissHenty · 04/09/2019 17:09

Elowen’s nickname, whether you like it or not will be “Elo” (“Hello”) Ello ello ello

No don’t pick that name, find something else unusual instead

MissHenty · 04/09/2019 17:07

No Elowen I really don’t like, but I love unusual names

Willa is a lovely name

So is Vivienne (I wouldn’t worry about whether that goes with middle name or not, it’ll hardly ever get used anyway, I only found out my husbands middle name after 2 years of dating and have no idea what any of my school friends’ middle names were)

Phew999 · 03/09/2019 22:05

Seren

Tess

CocoLoco87 · 03/09/2019 18:18

Apparently so! I've never read or watched it Blush but I'm reliably informed she was a nice character?
