If choosing a name in a couple isn't hard enough! Me and ex have recently split we have Ds together (Ellis) and I'm pregnant with Dd. We've finally agreed on a few names we both like, but he's got his preferences and I've got mine.

Me:
Betsy ( I'd quite like Elizabeth and shorten it but ex won't)
Matilda (Tilly(
Nelly (ex might consider Eleanor and shorten it)

Ex:
Annie
Georgie
Evie

Open to other suggestions but we've been through the baby book a hundred times and we've struggled to agree on these.

I think that’s lovely and also definitely prefer the Annabel spelling

PeachBeach · 22/08/2019 19:28

Definitely no to Bethany or similar, ex's ex was Bethany/Beth @mondler.

I know @autumnkate, shame as I like it. But really think he'd end up using Matty.

Think she's going to be Annabel (Annie) Matilda.

You can’t go with Matilda if he’d call her Matty Matthews 😱 (and I like Matty)

Annie is really lovely...

Strongly dislike Betsy tbh

mondler · 20/08/2019 11:03

What about Bethany or Bethan? Lots of knicknames including Annie and Beth and close to Betsy and Elizabeth x

PeachBeach · 19/08/2019 23:11

No he's only a baby @Ikeameatballs. They will be quite close in age.

We'd said if we do a longer name like Eleanor/Annabel it will just be on birth certificate and she'll be known by Annie/Nelly at school etc. So I'd hope that the Ellie/Ellis wouldn't be a issue, at least not until she's older and can decide for herself. In which case I won't mind what she chooses to go by.

If you are really struggling been two or need a middle name is your ds old enough to make a choice?

Ikeameatballs · 19/08/2019 22:21

I love both Annie and Matilda...however I prefer the “Matty” nn to “Tilly” and I agree that Matty Matthews sounds a bit odd.

I’d go with Annie Matthews.

Haffdonga · 19/08/2019 22:16

You really can't have an Ellis and an Eleanor.
Like it or not the names will get shortened at school to Ell/ Ellie. You'll end up with 2 dcs with the same name.

PeachBeach · 19/08/2019 22:06

Thanks @Feverslag. He's a idiot but he's a good dad and he wants to be as involved as possible, despite us being separated.

Christmastreeohchritmastree · 19/08/2019 21:16

what about Savannah and Annie for short

Horseshoe1 · 19/08/2019 21:06

I love Annie Matthews too. Sounds perfect. Annabel is a beautiful full name.

finallychangedmyusername · 19/08/2019 19:55

Annie Matilda Matthews is gorgeous. I love Matilda but Matty Matthews would be something I'd want to avoid too. Congrats!

Feverslag · 19/08/2019 19:28

I like Annie and Matilda OP but I just wanted to say I’m really glad you’re being reasonable in terms of that you’re ignoring the posters saying that your ex shouldn’t have as big a say as you. That would be really unfair and would certainly start the co-parenting relationship on a terrible footing. Hope it all goes well for you Flowers

Bookworm4 · 19/08/2019 19:26

Eleanor & Ellis too similar.
Matilda, double initials are very nice.

NoSauce · 19/08/2019 19:25

Matilda.

Betsy is terrible and will be one of those names that dates, like Elsie, Maisie etc.

I don’t like Annie either, it’s too harsh sounding to me. Anna is much nicer. Don’t like any of the others either sorry.

Mumshappy · 19/08/2019 19:24

Annie Matthew's sounds like it's meant to be. I'm biased though as I have an Annie.

PeachBeach · 19/08/2019 19:23

He's still her dad regardless (I ended things though) @Banjodancer. I'm not going to choose something I dislike, but equally he shouldn't dislike it either.
I was joking about the asking after she was born comment.

PeachBeach · 19/08/2019 19:21

Think we’re agreed on Annie/Annabel Matilda. Although ex messaged today. Do you think Annie suits a blonde haired child more than dark? Maybe we should see what we think when she’s born.
I’m like wtf!

Bouncingbelle · 19/08/2019 12:08

I think Eleanor/nelly/Ellie is too similar to Ellis.
Annie Matilda is gorgeous!

Heh1991 · 19/08/2019 08:11

I think Annie Matthews is really lovely!

For longer names you could have Anna, Annabel, Anastasia etc

I like Matilda with nickname Tilly but agree that Matty Matthews sounds strange!

For Nelly you could have longer names Eleanor, Ellen or Helen as options.

What about Annabel Elizabeth Matthews- you could then have nickname Annie or even play on middle name for your favourite Betsy? That might feel far enough removed for her name that your ex that agrees!

Banjodancer · 19/08/2019 06:51

Good lord if he has left a pg wife I wouldn't give a toss which name he preferred, having to convince him through the pain you go through in labour etc! If you left him I would still take the view that you are going to be doing most of the raising, form filling in etc for this child so it's daft if you are repeatedly writing and saying a name that doesn't really make you happy.

dreaming174 · 19/08/2019 06:46

I love Georgia, which can be NN Georgie

Cookit · 18/08/2019 20:54

Both Matilda and Annie / Annabel are lovely.

Maybe Annie / Annabel is a good compromise as it’s his choice of Annie (albeit one you like) but your choice that it needs to be Annabel officially.
