Name you loved but it was just too quirky?

Is there a name you didn’t use because it was just too quirky or “out there” but still love?

I loved Starr, Juniper and Skye, DH vetoed! (Don’t even think those are that quirky, tbh.)

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Moss

Hotterthanallheck · 19/08/2019 09:58

I love the name Mercedes for a girl. But too many people would just think of the car.

MrsNai · 19/08/2019 09:56

Partway through pregnancy I really, really wanted to name my son Beowulf.

Decided not to as I was concerned that it could cause some bullying.

Still think that it would have been pretty cool.

CountSnackula · 19/08/2019 09:47

Shulamith. Severine. Kenneret.

Leonid. Abelard.

Shulamith is number one, though. God, I love that name.

JonnyPocketRocket · 19/08/2019 09:40

Sufjan, after the singer. Still love it but he'd spend his whole life telling people how to spell/pronounce it ("soof-yan" for anyone curious).
Also Inigo (not Indigo), as in Jones. But figured he'd spend his life having "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." quoted at him.
And Augustus but DH doesn't like "Gus" as a NN.
There are some beautiful names on here!

Takemebacktolondon · 19/08/2019 09:34

I always loved Romeo, way before the Beckhams used it.

Livpool · 19/08/2019 09:33

Castiel

MrsSB99 · 19/08/2019 09:24

I wish I’d called my daughter Tuesday or Bellamy

I also like Wednesday whoever else said that.

I had no chance for for a out there name though one of my cousins is called Arizona

SJP3 · 19/08/2019 09:03

@Rainbowknickers My DS middle name is Job. It's a name that runs right through DH's family tree and I've grown to totally love it!

Spoonsmum · 19/08/2019 08:30

I loved the name Tex but had a girl
When I was pregnant my friend named the bump Lionel as a laugh but it weirdly grew on me. Probably lucky I had a girl to be honest .

EdgarAllenSloe · 19/08/2019 08:22

Ariadne (didn't like any of the potential nicknames, and a four syllable name is bound to get shortened).
Artemis (just a bit much)
Zelda (we almost went for this one)

SwimSwim · 19/08/2019 05:58

Xanthe - I loved it for a girl but sadly DP hated it 😣. It's such a pretty name and I now see it lots, now it's on my radar.

whatausername · 19/08/2019 05:35

@Yestermo I guess those names are Vadim and Yahya but I really hope one of them is actually Hatshepshut bc I love it so much Grin I am super white British as is most of my village and I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable using names so clearly (currently anyway) from different cultures. Instead I admire them and am glad others get to have such pretty names!

Oh and Itohan. A client had the name Itohan and it's gorgeous.

Cassandrainthenight · 19/08/2019 01:23

On balance, I think another Oliver or Olivia is better than something very weird, unpronounceable, obviously made up and doesn't even sound beautiful.
Or too pretentious or is also a name for a random object or phenomena, which doesn't even create any pleasant associations for people when they first hear it.

Cassandrainthenight · 19/08/2019 01:17

Sleeping -
Ignatius I kind of like, because I have a friend called that, but he's a monk :) He used to be Andrew.

Icarus met a bad end so I wouldn't due to the weight of mythological connotations.

Cassandrainthenight · 19/08/2019 01:14

Also, what's wrong or out there with Tallulah?? I know of so many I assumed it's pretty mainstream...Smoorbs for me Tallulah sounds way better than another Olivia or Millie, I just feel like dying of boredom when I hear of a new baby named like that.

Only one poster mentioned at least using the desired name as a middle name, not so few people end up as adults being known by their middle name, look at Boris. I definitely would have done it if pined for a name but thought it'd make the child's name difficult.
Why not do that?

SleepingStandingUp · 19/08/2019 01:13

Balthazar or Theseus.

Poor twins still have no names, and lots of people hoping we rule out Ignatius and Icarus....

managedmis · 19/08/2019 01:04

Quentin

Thing is, DS would have rocked it

Cassandrainthenight · 19/08/2019 00:59

On the all inclusive holiday we've just been to our room's cleaner's name was Hortensia (I think she was from the Philippines).
I think it sounds pretty but it just means hydrangea in many European languages, I kept thinking of the maid as Hydrangea all the time, I think it'd put me off using it as a name (though it's a nice enough blossoming bush)

Krisskrosskiss · 19/08/2019 00:04

Phaedra, Lux, Eurydice, Olympia, Iolanthe, Artemisia, Aphra, Circe, Tristessa

We went for something pretty far out anyway though lol

Ritascornershop · 19/08/2019 00:03

Petula
Pearl
Cosima- all girls names vetoed by exh

Samuel - vetoed by exh, obviously perfectly normal name, he just didn’t like it.

Cattenberg · 18/08/2019 23:56

I love Oberon and Keir/Kier!

Rialta - it’s Italian and reminded me of Venice. But then someone pointed out that it’s a type of motor home.

Twyla - reminded me of twilight.

Sunniva - I thought Sunni would be a lovely nickname. But apparently it’s actually pronounced SOON-ee-va.

Esmeralda - I loved this one as a child.

Crunchymum · 18/08/2019 23:35

Albertine
Indiana (for a girl)
Juna

Ignacio

CatSmize · 18/08/2019 23:17

giggly · 18/08/2019 22:52
