Name you loved but it was just too quirky?

Is there a name you didn’t use because it was just too quirky or “out there” but still love?

I loved Starr, Juniper and Skye, DH vetoed! (Don’t even think those are that quirky, tbh.)

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Aozora13 · 20/10/2019 00:48

We toyed with Rogue and Raven for DDs - although both their actual names have made this thread so didn’t play it too safe!

PulyaSochsup · 20/10/2019 00:38

I absolutely loved Joan and Ursula but DH disagreed 🙁.
I loved the name Charles at one point but settled on Edward instead.

Not exactly ‘out there’ but as far out as I would probably go.

MissPepper8 · 20/10/2019 00:27

Bear, DH still wants it but my parents raised the point about the shitting in the woods 😂. At the time we thought it was cute as we use to call our little boy bear when he was born so it had a sweet sentiment behind it.

I like Opheila, but lots of negative comments about the links of the name on here.

For DS I liked Idris for a while, we're Welsh so Cadir Idris is a mountain, Idris chair and I liked the meaning of "ardent lord" or "Prince" behind it. But it's a strong name to carry and didn't suit DS.

Bumfuzzled · 19/10/2019 23:05

I temporarily thought that Agapanthus would be a nice name for our DD. I totally blame the pregnancy hormones Grin

Themazeoflife · 19/10/2019 23:02

Storm - girl
Blaze - boy

Danglingmod · 19/10/2019 22:55

Loads of names mentioned here are totally not "out there" :

Dylan, Gabriel, Xanthe, Reuben, Aurora, Stella, Poppy, India... All completely normal...

I really like Welsh names and have taught children with some really lovely ones (we are nowhere near Wales). I think my favourite is Iestyn. A name I love but wouldn't have used is Arrietty.

steppemum · 19/10/2019 22:36

Kizzy- was too much like a cat name, plus not many people know the book 'Roots'.

only on page 4, but just had to say - we used to have a cat called Kizzy!
It came from a tv kids programme in 1970 called Kizzy the didakoi.

We lived in Saudi at the time, she was our cta their, and mum used to stand on back steo and call - Kizz, Kizz kizz kizzy!
Until someone told her that Kizz in arabic is pretty rude Blush

Paddingtonthebear · 19/10/2019 22:31

I work with children between newborn age to 9 years. So many names listed here that I recognise.

And Dexter is so popular now, not an out there choice at all! Steve would be an out there choice these days Grin

Bobbindale · 19/10/2019 22:30

Biba...everyone thought I was saying Bieber

CoffeeBeansGalore · 19/10/2019 22:27

Loved Cassiopia (but wouldn't go with surname). If DS had been a girl he would of been Darcy.

Clickncollect · 19/10/2019 22:14

Hercules! I absolutely love it but there is no way on earth I could call a boy such a grand name. We went for Conor instead.

Yorkshiremum17 · 19/10/2019 22:09

Mine loved but not used
Tegwyn
Ophelia
Digby
Zephaniah

bluerad · 19/10/2019 21:48

Cerise

finallychangedmyusername · 19/10/2019 21:31

Names I love but would never have used:

Ember, Linnea, Madeleif, Sophronia, Calliope, Seraphina, Xanthippe.

Alaric, Elnathan, Rudyard, Magnus, Ludovic, Jolyon, Casimir, Dashiell, Jacoby, Elric, Lazarus.

Ironically my kids names are both top 50. Grin

Santa

december20100 · 18/10/2019 13:24

I like Jaleesa, but I don't think I'd use it

AnExParrot · 17/10/2019 12:17

I absolutely adore Iorwerth and Geraint as boys' names but neither DH nor I are Welsh and we live in SE England. I can't condemn our lad to a lifetime of "Sorry, how do you spell/say that?"

fedupntired · 16/10/2019 17:57

Rubaiy
Loved those books!

OddshoesOddsocks · 16/10/2019 13:55

Dd1 could’ve been Arietty which I still love

Dd2 would’ve been a Stanley if she’d been a boy, it felt ever so ‘out there’ 5 years ago but 10 a penny round here now!

DC3 has had many names vetoed so far including Atticus and Cassius. I adore both but DP having none of it! I’ve also had Astrid and Margot poo-pooed, we have very different tastes in names!

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 16/10/2019 10:12

@fedupntired do i spot someone who read too many Anne McCaffrey books at an impressionable age...?

My list that DH vetoed:
Calliope
Nixie
Camille
Petra.
I’m due dd2 in 8 weeks, and he’s vetoed them all again this time round. Unreasonable so and so.

Hippee · 15/10/2019 21:41

Scout or Ruan for DD, from two of my favourite books - not particularly out there, but DH wasn't keen.

There is a Ptolemy locally and it does sound a bit wrong, when shouted across a swimming pool.

DS1 is at school with a Cosmo - we did joke that he might have siblings called Hello and Chat.

A friend has a Gertrude, which suits her perfectly.

CondeNasty · 15/10/2019 21:04

Artemis and Persephone were my two favourites but sound awful with our surname. Persephone worked better out of the two but too many people struggle to pronounce it and I didnt want her to be teased.

nottodaysatanlucifer · 15/10/2019 21:01

DH really loved Dexter.
But I either kept singing the theme to Dexter’s lab (cartoon) or worried he’d turn into Dexter the OCD serial killer

I am a big fan of both those programmes. (Dexter's lab was my all time favourite as a child).

I called my son Dexter in 2016. Better watch him like a hawk to make sure he doesn't turn into a serial killer just by name association 🧐
