Does this middle name sound strange with our chosen first name?

Our 20-week scan showed that we're having a girl, which is amazing and exciting - even more so because we couldn't agree on a boys name :-)

We both love Orla as a first name - reflects Irish heritage (we're using an anglicised version rather than Orlaith or Orlagh though as we live in England) and I'd love to use a much-loved and missed relative's name as a middle name, but DH isn't sure it "goes" with Orla.

What do you all think of Orla Joanie?

I prefer Orla Joanie
It goes and it is more modern

RedPandaFluff · 12/08/2019 20:42

Oh god does it, @IceAndFire0 ?! I didn't know that! Fada it is 😆

Lovely :)

IceAndFire0 · 12/08/2019 20:17

Órla Joan is lovely.

Orla without the fada means vomit so please spell her name with one! 😅

Ellmau · 12/08/2019 20:10

Orla Joan sounds lovely!

RedPandaFluff · 12/08/2019 20:10

I think it's going to be Orla Joan - thanks everyone . . . primarily because of @OtraCosaMariposa's comment 😆

Oria Joan is great. Joanie isn't so good.

Danglingmod · 12/08/2019 18:09

I love both names. Joanie (or Jeanie) would be a possible first name if we'd ever had a girl BUT I think Orla Joan works and sounds much better together.

MrsDimmond · 12/08/2019 18:06

Yes, Orla Joan sounds lovely - much better than Orla Joanie (I think its two names ending in vowels rather than syllables but eho knows Grin)

whatausername · 12/08/2019 18:06

Orla Joan is beautiful. I can't see the OJ thing happening unless you start it 😂 and Orla is so lovely I don't see why you would

ThunderR0ad78 · 12/08/2019 18:03

And that's for Joanie.....much before this, it's softer!

ThunderR0ad78 · 12/08/2019 18:01

I love it! Go for it!

OtraCosaMariposa · 12/08/2019 17:59

Orla Joanie sounds like a drunk person trying to say Orginally.

Joan is much better.

Marcipex · 12/08/2019 17:53

I think Orla Joan sounds better.

Luckingfovely · 12/08/2019 17:47

Yes, I agree that Orla Joan works so much better.

weekellye · 12/08/2019 16:41

Orla Joan seems to run off the tongue easier.

I knew an Orlaith Jean at uni. Always thought it sounded lovely.

Hmmmbop · 12/08/2019 16:39

Orla Joan sounds better but I think Orla Joanie is a nicer name! I know a baby Joni (pronounced Joanie) so if do think it's gaining popularity.

AcrobaticCardigan · 12/08/2019 16:12

Orla Joan has a nicer ring to it (in my opinion). Congrats by the way!

RedPandaFluff · 12/08/2019 15:10

Thanks for replies everyone. Lots of people seem to prefer Orla Joan - wonder if two syllables then one syllable is more pleasing than two-then two . . .

I'm overthinking this, aren't I? 😁

Orla Joan is much nicer.

starkid · 12/08/2019 14:39

I prefer Orla Joan :) congrats!

SallyWD · 12/08/2019 14:12

I think Orla Joan is beautiful and would still be a good tribute to the relative. If it must be Joanie it's still fine. No one ever hears the middle name after the birth announcement anyway! I don't know any of my friend's middle names.

Antonin · 12/08/2019 14:09

Orla Joan sounds best. Nice combination and not predictable.
Congratulations

ShhhBeQuiet · 12/08/2019 14:04

No one uses middle names apart from new parents when they are telling everyone the babies new name so I don't think it matters at all whether the names go together or not.
Having said that Orla Joan or Orla Joanie sounds very good together.

I think I prefer Joan to Joanie but both are lovely.

IsobelRae23 · 12/08/2019 14:01

Remember your baby is only a baby for a small portion of her life- then she will be an adult. So Joan would be more appropriate than a ‘younger’ Joanie.
