Would love to hear your opinions as I’m in a very big debate right now (although I do have google on my side) 🤣

Theodore - could you call him Teddy for short/a nickname ??? I thought it was lovely but quite a few people are saying it’s not even a thing lol.

Wondering what your opinions are :)

For me...

Theodore = theo

Edward = Ted/teddy

If you want to call him teddy, put that on his birth certificate!

I'm from a big family, one of 6, my parents each gave us long names they had no intention of actually using!

Mooncake87 · 20/08/2019 00:23

Reminds me of Bundy 😂

bookishtartlet · 18/08/2019 18:27

My son's exact name. Not hugely popular here in my part of Scotland (Central belt) and I love it. I let him choose what nursery call him e.g. Theo or Teddy. I liked the options and I feel it's a name that will grow with him.

Ticklemeelmo · 18/08/2019 17:35

My cat is called Teddy. Not sure how well it translates to being an adult male, it's cute for little boys

HisBetterHalf · 18/08/2019 15:29

I prefer Theo

AverageMummy · 18/08/2019 15:22

I think Theodore is a lovely name and who cares if it ends up dating him to the generation he’s actually in?

Pippilangstrumpfi · 18/08/2019 14:53

My thoughts are; oh god, not ANOTHER Teddy!!

Mine too! And Theo.

Oblomov19 · 16/08/2019 07:28

I like it. My new nephew is called it and everyone calls him Theo.

MikeUniformMike · 16/08/2019 07:19

Theodore is awful sorry, but it is very popular, as is Theo as a full name.
Teddy is popular as a standalone name, and is popular as short for Theodore or Edward.
He'll go through life as Teddy/Theodore Surname or Teddy/Theodore S.
If you are ok with that, fine.

Cookit · 16/08/2019 06:26

Yes it’s 100% a nickname for Theodore.

My thoughts are; oh god, not ANOTHER Teddy!! (Bare in mind that nowadays most Edwards are Teddy too and some just named Teddy without a full name too).

Flowerspowersy · 16/08/2019 05:53

As these responses show, Theodore/Theo/Teddy is currently very fashionable- there will be lots of them. As a result the name will probably fall out of fashion soon and start to sound dated.

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 15/08/2019 23:08

Love the name

Prettylittlelady · 09/08/2019 22:25

Yes Teddy can defo be a nickname for Theodore
Just beware it is incredibly popular at the moment I know of 8/9 teddy’s who are between 9-12 years old and a couple more that are under 1.

IHaveBrilloHair · 09/08/2019 16:45

Very, very popular, but a lovely name.

Longqueue · 09/08/2019 16:44

I suspect that might be part of why it’s an uncommon shortening in the past few decades

Longqueue · 09/08/2019 16:43

It’s definitely a thing but shortening Theodore to Ted unfortunately makes me think of Bundy

Tweetingmagpie · 09/08/2019 16:20

This is my teddy

Theodore/ Teddy ???
Tweetingmagpie · 09/08/2019 16:19

It’s very popular but I can see why, it’s a great name and teddy is a great nickname.

growlingbear · 09/08/2019 16:19

I love the name Theodore and the nicknames Teddy, Ted, Theo.

Lavenderblues · 09/08/2019 16:18

Very very fashionable and popular at the moment! He'll be one of several in his class/year/place of work.

I feel Theo/Teddy is already starting to sound a little overused and dated.

Chlosavxox · 09/08/2019 16:02

@JuneSpoon it’s quite funny really as my new fav is Teddy and my boyfriends fav is Theodore so it’s the best of both worlds really 😁

I love it.
Theodore Roosevelt - Teddy Bear

It's top of my list but

  1. I am not pregnant!
  2. DH doesn't like it
Militantmartha · 09/08/2019 15:58

@Chlosavxox it's popular because it's a great name. So as long as it being popular doesn't bother you it's lovely. Sorry for your loss, I know what you mean about not using names picked before as they belong to that baby. All the best this time, I agree choosing baby names is lots of fun.

PurBal · 09/08/2019 15:56

I find the nickname Teddy for Theodore kind of annoying. Mainly because, traditionally, Teddy is short for Edward. And Theo is a more traditional shortening for Theodore. Arguable Ed is a more logical shortening for Edward. And I know a Ben whose full name is Benedict and a Chris whose full name is Chrisitan. So it's not unusual at all. It kind of messes with my head but for no other reason than I overthink it. There were 5 little ones at our wedding. 3 are called Teddy (2 are Edwards)

Bearno2 · 09/08/2019 15:53

I have a Theodore / Teddy. His nickname was going to be Theo but he turned out to be a Teddy / Ted
