Elowen or Dulcie?

I am expecting a baby girl very soon, dh and I cannot decide wether to name her Elowen or Dulcie.
As you can gather, we love unique names as we don't want her to start school and have other children with the same name.
We also haven't decided on a middle name either so any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thank you

Neither

Sorry OP

Elowen

theatrenerd31 · 15/08/2019 15:13

Elowen is struggle to pronounce. If it's "el-Owen" it reminds me of someone saying LOL. Not a fan, sorry!

Not really a fan of Dulcie either though, again I'd struggle on pronunciation, it just doesn't sound great spoken aloud either imho!

Sorry! Neither are my cup of tea!

Elowen is really nice but I just don’t GET Dulcie. Where did it come from? Why is it suddenly everywhere? It’s got like a vintage-nickname feel to it but I’ve never heard it used in old books, movies etc, or met any old people with the name like I have with other vintage-nicknames. Is it made up and then just caught on, like Nevaeh? It’s confuses me.

Elowen is lovely.

I never usually comment negatively on names on here but Dulcie is my least favourite name ever. Sorry.

missmouse101 · 15/08/2019 08:54

Elowen is fabulous. Dulcie I quite like but it sounds like a food for some reason!

AverageMummy · 15/08/2019 08:50

Dulcie is extremely rare there are only about 50 a year to Olivia’s 5,000 or whatever it is. And even the top names are less than 1%. Someone knowing one doesn’t mean it’s not rare.

There are a few more Dolcies than Dulcies a year if that spelling appeals. I love the name and have no idea why it’s so hated on mumsnet but the reaction did remove it from my list.

@CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook I’m sorry this is totally pointless but I’m completely baffled by what you mean about ‘oh the W is silent’
The description of Ell-o-en is surely identical to the word Low.... how would you make it sound any different with the W???

Poetryinaction · 14/08/2019 23:28

Dulcie makes me think of Dulce de leche. Yuck, sickly sweet. And I have met a few over the past 5 years. Elowen is ok.

Graymare · 14/08/2019 22:09

Elowen.

AverageMummy · 14/08/2019 22:00

I love Dulcie - I posted a few weeks back about it & was quite surprised about how hated it is here!
Elowen is also beautiful

Chillisauceboss · 14/08/2019 18:44

Dulcie is vey popular in London currently. I know if 4 in local baby groups

Cookit · 14/08/2019 18:38

Oh Elowen, I don’t like Dulcie at all.

Miljah · 14/08/2019 18:17

I am old enough to have great aunts called names like Dulcie. Her husband was Ewert...

I'd pronounce Elowen like Ell-OW-en, too.

hashtagthathappened · 13/08/2019 13:29

Same brie

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 13/08/2019 13:27

I am afraid I dislike both of them equally. No, actually, Dulcie is worse. Sorry.

birdling · 12/08/2019 20:14

I desperately wanted to call our dd Elowen. It would have suited her too. She is like a little fairy.

AfterSchoolWorry · 09/08/2019 10:23

Dulcie is atrocious.

Leleophants · 09/08/2019 10:17

Dulcie makes me think of people know name kids after designers and cars. Elowen is beautiful!

bebeboeuf · 08/08/2019 20:54

I prefer Dulcie

I think it’s really pretty

The other name is ok too but makes me think of a cockney saying Hello then

MikeUniformMike · 08/08/2019 20:53

Elowen is cornish. Its meaning is Elm Tree.

Oneforposy7 · 08/08/2019 20:29

Definitely Elowen

Bossbabynx5 · 08/08/2019 20:28

I've never heard of elowen, are u sure it's not made up? I like dulcie but I much prefer dolcie out of all of them.

MikeUniformMike · 08/08/2019 19:16

I think it's El-OH-wen too. Nice (even if it sounds like L Owen).
Dulcie is awful.

Greymoon2016 · 08/08/2019 18:44

Hello I had Elowyn chosen for my first but then I realised that w y n is masculine so In my hormonal pregnant state decided on Elodie instead. Its a beautiful name though I just preferred it spelt in the masculine manner lol 😂 I also like dulcie and I think elowen dulcie go together quite nicely x
