DM not keen on our name list

Me and DP are due to get married in the new year. So far the names we like are Levi Matthew, Conrad Erwin for boys or Ophelia Innogen, Eira Guinevere and Victoria Elizabeth for girls. DM is not keen on any of those names and has not failed to let me know so. I am somewhat disappointed that she did not like the names we picked. Is there anything genuinely wrong with them.

@BackOnceAgainWithABurnerEmail none of the names are made up

Why are you including anyone but you and your DP in this discussion? You have a baby, decide on a name between yourselves and let the rest of the world know. No one else should be involved in the process.

@CodenameVillanelle some of the names are middle names. So Levi Matthew because after research I learned that the apostle Matthew's birth name was Levi. It was one way to name the child after DP without giving him his first name. Conrad was DP's choice and Erwin is my grandfather's first name. Ophelia Innogen was because my love for Shakespeare and I found the names so pretty. Eira Guinevere once I looked up the meaning literally meant Snow White. While Victoria Elizabeth I wanted to name after the three greatest Queens we had.

I was just talking about kid names we liked because she brought up what she would have liked to call me and my name was forced onto her without her real input as she was so exhausted after giving birth.

Number 1 rule never discuss baby names with family, it never ends well.

MsSquiz · 07/08/2019 19:42

Meh, my gran and auntie (my DM's mum and sister) didn't like my name when I was born and didn't use it for the first 2 weeks of my life! (Just called me "the baby"!)
They got used to it and called me it for the rest of my life! (Now 33!)

You may well find that you change your mind when you conceive.

DH and I had a long list of names when we were TTC, but as soon as we found out we were having a girl, we got the list down to 2 names. We mentioned these to the in laws - who all gave their opinion. But their opinions wouldn't have affected our decision at all.

llangennith · 07/08/2019 19:41

Stop talking to her about names. By doing so you're inviting her opinion and she's given it.
I don't like any of the names either btw.

TheWildAndTheCurious · 07/08/2019 19:40

Codename - Ophelia and Genevieve are far from out there! Ophelia is Greek and Genevieve has Celtic, french and Germanic roots. They aren't very common but hardly unheard off! And Eira isn't odd at all. It's welsh! What a rude comment!

OP there is nothing wrong with any of your names. It's none of your mother's business what names you and your husband decide to give you children. If you love them, go for them!

formerbabe · 07/08/2019 19:38

Victoria and Elizabeth together don't work imo...though lovely individually.

Love Ophelia but not Innogen.

Matthew is a classic

Levi is hideous

Conrad is nice

It doesn't matter anyway as long as you like them.

Your mother has had her chance and time to name her own baby/babies. This is your baby so your choice.

NotSoFrankly · 07/08/2019 19:37

Let me get this straight. You haven’t had a baby. You aren’t pregnant. You aren’t trying to get pregnant. Nonetheless you are discussing a list of names of hypothetical future children with your mother?

ohmysoul · 07/08/2019 19:35

It's none of your mum's business but why are you discussing names with her any way. As PPs have said these are hypothetical children. You all need to calm down a bit.

CloserIAm2Fine · 07/08/2019 19:32

Why are you discussing names of imaginary children with your mother anyway?

They’re not particularly my taste but if you and DP love them then just don’t discuss it with other people until you’re introducing your child. People are far more likely to be rude about a hypothetical name than about your newborn!

BackOnceAgainWithABurnerEmail · 07/08/2019 19:31

I never understand why people get their family involved with ‘signing off’ names. Her view is irrelevant.

That said I don’t much like your selection either - a weird mix of boring and made up. But your baby so your choice.

CodenameVillanelle · 07/08/2019 19:27

Levi, Matthew, Victoria and Elizabeth are fine. Conrad and Erwin are a bit out there but ok. Ophelia and Guinevere are way out there. Innogen isn't a name and eira is a bit odd.

SeeSomethingSaySomething · 07/08/2019 19:27

All seem very ordinary names tbh.

What names did she suggest?
