DM not keen on our name list

Me and DP are due to get married in the new year. So far the names we like are Levi Matthew, Conrad Erwin for boys or Ophelia Innogen, Eira Guinevere and Victoria Elizabeth for girls. DM is not keen on any of those names and has not failed to let me know so. I am somewhat disappointed that she did not like the names we picked. Is there anything genuinely wrong with them.

Imogen not Imo glen!

JoanieCash · 15/08/2019 23:23

I get that Innogen is the original imo glen spelling, but Inogen is also the leading brand name for portable oxygen machines. Quite frankly that’s in your head it’s kind of like calling your child hoover rather than harvey.

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 15/08/2019 23:11

Your Mum had her chance to name her children. Now it is your turn. Don’t tell her in future.

Crunchymum · 08/08/2019 23:42

So you aren't actually pregnant? Yet you are discussing names with your mum? Shock

Lilyrose90 · 08/08/2019 17:04

Doesn’t matter what your mum thinks. I’m sure she’d like them if you actually used them.
Having said that, personally I don’t like Conrad Erwin, Ophelia Innogen or the name Guinevere

Pinkout · 08/08/2019 16:10

Ophelia is lovely btw.

Pinkout · 08/08/2019 16:09

Don’t discuss names before the birth with anyone except your OH, it’s such a mistake. I made the same mistake with DC1 so just didn’t tell a soul with my other three children, it wasn’t worth the hassle!

MyOtherProfile · 08/08/2019 15:14

When is your baby due? Is there a chance she will have forgotten these names by then? If so please don't ever mention future names to her again.

Lilyannarose · 08/08/2019 15:09

I'd never heard of Innogen and assumed it was a typo for Imogen until I looked it up and realised she was a heroine in a Shakespeare play.
I think it's fine to use although you may have to correct people a lot if they mistake it for Imogen.
Ophelia is beautiful although becoming more popular now.
What ever you decide, it's your choice and your decision so maybe keep the names to yourself and don't mention until the baby arrives if your mum's opinion matters to you.

Littlejets · 08/08/2019 00:44

I haven't even read the thread because telling anyone your idea of a name will instantly put you off of it whether it be someone they know or just their opinion. Please keep your ideas to yourself. Choosing a name is hard!!!!!

I remember telling someone my choice and their irrelevant response was 'why would you name a child that' to which my response was 'why would you name your child "THAT" (we were due months apart and i was hormonal).

Peanutbuttericecream · 07/08/2019 22:30

Don’t discuss it with her. The decision on naming a baby is entirely the parent’s.

Your names are lovely.

UrsulaPandress · 07/08/2019 22:25

I'm loving Innogen.

NoSauce · 07/08/2019 22:21

I like all your names apart from Levi, Erwin and Conrad.

OP your mum is really being unfair. It’s nothing to do with her what you call your baby. She’s had her chance at naming her child. Try and ignore her.

Elizabeth is my favourite.

GlamGiraffe · 07/08/2019 22:10

The funny thing is I always knew exactly what is call my hypothetical children. Names I loved, appropriate meanings, names which went with mine etc....them.they were born. At that point it went totally out the window. With DD i had a name i liked during pregnancy but couldnt decide, with DS i couldnt decide on a boys name from 11 weeks. He was 3 weeks old before he has a name and DD was registered with a name at 7.5 weeks, so I wouldn't actually worry overly about it. What seems like a good idea now at seem different either when you are pregnant or when there's a little person lying in your arms. It's good to know the type of criteria for names you like though, it definitely helps narrow the array down.

carmellax · 07/08/2019 21:58

I don't think it's unusual to talk about baby names with a partner at all. I wouldn't mention to DM or MIL though. Especially if I wasn't even pregnant. When I was pregnant I told my mum a name I liked and she said she hated it put me right off! Didn't tell her anymore

That said I don't like any of the names on your list quite try hard

justchecking1 · 07/08/2019 21:57

Just FYI, Gwyneira is Welsh for Snow White. It's a complete name in itself

HJWT2 · 07/08/2019 21:51

DH's dad said the other day "Your not calling the baby that name are you??, you younger generation" and rolled his eyes! Cant wait to send a pic of baby in his PERSONALISED HAT to FIL now 😁😁😁

(I had to laugh FIL is 18 years older than DH, were he gets younger generation is beyond me)

KatherineJaneway · 07/08/2019 21:43

First four are try hard names, Victoria Elizabeth is fine.

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 07/08/2019 21:39

Jokes aside, though, I really like Eira as a name. I'd not heard it before.

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 07/08/2019 21:38

Isambard Copernicus*
or
Tuppence Dorcas*

In deadpan manner, you and DP need to regularly bandy those combinations around within your mother's hearing.
By comparison, any eventual, genuine choice(s) will come as a pleasant surprise to her...

Dislike Levi, Conrad and Innogen (also thought it was a typo)

Frith2013 · 07/08/2019 21:06

Inergen is a type of gas used to put out fires.

But these are all moot points as you’re not pregnant yet.

AnneLovesGilbert · 07/08/2019 20:59

Thanks! I got to comment on a thread where someone was considering Gilbert for her son which was my best MN moment ever Grin

That’s completely fair enough if you invited her thoughts. FWIW I love Matthew and Ophelia was on my list (not that I remembered at the time!)

As I said with my SM, no guarantee people will like your name even when faced with your gorgeous new baby, but it’s typical of her to have a strong opinion on something that’s nothing to do with her, love her though I do. She’s also picked her grandma variant which no child would ever be able to pronounce so we’ll tackle that down the line...

I’ll stop derailing now!

demureandgraceful · 07/08/2019 20:53

@AnneLovesGilbert really love your user name. big fan of the books. i did let her know though I value her opinion they are the names we like and that is the end of it. She did never bring it up again which I know is her accepting the names we picked and that's that. I am sure she will learn to love them when the time comes.

It’s fine to think about names in advance but it’s risky to let anyone else (in your family or circle) to think they get a say. We didn’t know what we were having so had several options for boys and girls with a top choice for each. In the drug addled haze after she was born we could only remember one of the girls names so that’s what she got and we loved it. When family asked what was on the cards when I was pregnant my SM said she hated the girls name and suggested a totally random other name a neighbour’s Granddaughter had. When we named DD she was still off about it and when she was about 3 months SM said - with massive fanfare - that she was coming round to the name. I had to stifle my laughter as her reticence hadn’t exactly been keeping me up at night and said with a beam on my face “oh goooooood”....
