An-eye-EESE according to old French friends with the name and my French speaking mamma bear :)

Agree with previous posters that Anay is a mistake, made by ignoring or misunderstanding how the pronunciation is affected by the ï.

I went to uni with a French girl of this name and she pronounced it Anaayse.... as in pace.
When I queried the perfume which I pronounced anay anay she have me the eye roll. Yep, as others have said, it's never been anay. 😳

Overly invested @TatianaLarina Wink

HalfManHalfLabrador · 05/08/2019 16:54

An eye ees

TatianaLarina · 05/08/2019 16:51

This just gets funnier and weirder.

Leakinglikeacolander · 05/08/2019 16:31

Whoever said upthread about the perfume being pronounced an-ay an-ay is wrong.
People seem to get confused by school French and as soon as they see ais they think ay.
I am old enough to remember the advert on tv.

Fwiw its one of my dc names and she doesnt give a shit if people dont pronounce it exactly right, and answers to all sorts of weird pronounciatios such as Anayy or anneece. Choosing a french name, i guess it was to be expected.

TatianaLarina · 05/08/2019 14:29

Not sure why you’re so determined to tell a native French speaker that they can’t pronounce their own language Josepheen

TatianaLarina · 05/08/2019 14:27

I did agree with Tatiana on the 'naïve' example tbf and tried to elaborate on it. I think it's just difficult to put across in the written form, how it should be pronounced in English when in my head, I'm hearing it in French.

Exactly.

It’s hard to render the precise French pronunciation in English. I don’t agree that the English pronunciation of Anna + ees matches, for the reasons I gave.

Naïve is pronounced Na-eev, N-eye-eev is the anglicised way
Anaïs is therefore Anna-ees (emphasis on 's')

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's Ann-eye-eese. I reckon you can pronounce it the other ways too though?
