"Pony club" names

I've seen that description every now and then on baby name threads. I know what it means but can't think of examples beyond Araminta. What do you consider to be "pony club" names?

Imogen shortened to Immy or Immo

I was talking to a woman very recently who was similarly cross about the whole pony club image issue. She also explained that it's about priorities. She has had to cut down to two foreign holidays a year and had to let the boat go in order to retain her lifestyle and the ponies.

I did chuckle.
(she was lovely BTW)

The pony club people I rode with (but didn’t attend club myself) were:-

Donna, Emma, Louise,Sarah, Gemma, Lorna, Katie, Rachel, Harriet, Aimee, Victoria, Bethan and Sophie.

This was the 90’s mind!!!

My MIL is a huge horse lover, owns a few and runs a horse riding club. She’s called Tracey Grin Grin.

VivienneHolt · 30/07/2019 14:52

What's a pony club? Do you actually have to own a pony to take part ?

You have to supply your own pony, either by owning one or borrowing one. There are weekly 'rallies' where you attend and have lessons on various aspects of riding and horse care. You can also sit various proficiency tests. Most branches have a summer camp. There are usually also shows and competitions.

Where I grew up it was the heart of farming country and everybody had a pony, so pony club wasn't at all unusual or exclusively for the posh. There were posh kids, for sure - but also loads of normal people.

That said, I appreciate that owning (or loaning) horses is an expensive business. If there could be a way of opening up access to people who couldn't afford their own horses it would be much better. Not sure how the logistics would work though.

Fatkins · 30/07/2019 12:35

Never heard or seen this! But I definitely know what you mean.

Fwiw, the only (former) pony club members I know are called Rachel, Lily, Claire and Frances. I don't think any of those are awfully "pony club". So it's a bit of a silly term to me.

I guess they mean things like Araminta though.

Reminds me when I was expecting my DD I had set my heart on calling her Bonnie Blue (Gone with the Wind tragic character.)
I was dissuaded. DD says she would have never forgiven me 😊

Rachelover40 · 29/07/2019 22:53

I've never heard of 'pony club' names, children who go riding have all sorts of names. Mine went riding as did our neighbours and there was nothing particularly distinctive about any of the children's names.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 29/07/2019 22:44

I wouldn't say Lacey or Isla were posh.Confused
Where I'm from. I'm falling over mothers screeching Aaahlllllerrrrr
Elizabeth is classes as much as it's classic.
Meaning it suits anyone from any walk of life. Which is why it's such a fab name.
I know an Elizabeth (Liz) who's as common as muck and The Queen of England bares the same name.

Harriet
Penelope
Antigone
Georgina
Tabitha
Bella
Juliet
Charlotte
Rosie
Eleanor

@AverageMummy of course- but there is more than just “rich/posh” and “poor” - most people in my experience at PC are just average. Not struggling to put food on the table, but not in possession of a trust fund either.
We live in an average house, with an unremarkable income, bugger all savings etc. Not had a holiday in years. We aren't poor but we are also living payday to payday.

@Megan2018 but ‘different priorities’ assumes people have the cash. We can’t afford holidays / phone contracts etc. I’d adore my kids to ride but there are no other priorities to swap as eating isn’t really optional. Didn’t mean to sound preachy there Grin just it isn’t accessible to many & so is still predominantly those with lots of disposable income.

Hunter Trials by John Betjeman

It’s awf’lly bad luck on Diana,
Her ponies have swallowed their bits;
She fished down their throats with a spanner
And frightened them all into fits.

So now she’s attempting to borrow.
Do lend her some bits, Mummy, do;
I’ll lend her my own for to-morrow,
But to-day I’ll be wanting them too.

Just look at Prunella on Guzzle,
The wizardest pony on earth;
Why doesn’t she slacken his muzzle
And tighten the breech in his girth?

I say, Mummy, there’s Mrs. Geyser
And doesn’t she look pretty sick?
I bet it’s because Mona Lisa
Was hit on the hock with a brick.

Miss Blewitt says Monica threw it,
But Monica says it was Joan,
And Joan’s very thick with Miss Blewitt,
So Monica’s sulking alone.

And Margaret failed in her paces,
Her withers got tied in a noose,
So her coronets caught in the traces
And now all her fetlocks are loose.

Oh, it’s me now. I’m terribly nervous.
I wonder if Smudges will shy.
She’s practically certain to swerve as
Her Pelham is over one eye.

Oh, wasn’t it naughty of Smudges?
Oh, Mummy, I’m sick with disgust.
She threw me in front of the Judges,
And my silly old collarbone’s bust.
