Clarence - possible name for a girl?

I've just come across the name Clarence and instinctively thought it was a girl's name - turns out I was wrong!

However I think it's for quite a feminine feel to it so could be used for a girl - or am I going mad?!

Clarence is a cross eyed lion, an angel in Wonderful Life (Attaboy, Clarence!), and the inventor of the fish finger.

Sr Michael / Sr Mary Clarence don’t use those names because they are unisex - it refers to a devotion to a particular saint.

OP, Laurence has a similar feel and is a girls’ name in France but it would cause a lot of confusion if your DD is going to grow up in the UK. I agree with a PP that Clémence is lovely.

I’m going to put the amongst the pigeons by saying I’ve met a female Clarence.

I am pretty sure it's the name of the old man/ angel in It's A Wonderful Life.

TheRLodger · 29/07/2019 09:16

It’s one of those Victorian if a bit earlier flowery boys names which were all the rage back then

StuntCroissant · 29/07/2019 09:09

What about Clemence then? I know two girls called that and it doesn't have the "eee" sound.

TheRedFox · 29/07/2019 08:54

It's funny as I don't really like all the female "equivalents". I think it's "ee" sound in Clarice or Clemency - they sound a bit prissy to me.

Still quite a feminine boy's' name IMO!

No. What about Clarisse? Similar feel

Astronica · 29/07/2019 08:24

No, definitely boy only. Clemency and Clara are lovely though, or Florence for similar sounds.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 29/07/2019 08:15

Boys name for sure

sunshineys · 29/07/2019 08:14

Boys name

Neolara · 29/07/2019 08:10

No. Just no. Sorry.

Colourfulest · 29/07/2019 08:05

I had this with the name Ezra. Couldn't believe it was a boys name when I found out! For years I thought it was a girls name as it sounded to feminine to me!

OtraCosaMariposa · 29/07/2019 07:52

The nun in Derry Girls is Sister Michael.

That's a boys name too.

azulmariposa · 29/07/2019 07:38

Oops I meant Clarice!

azulmariposa · 29/07/2019 07:38

I watched sister act yesterday, and Whoopi's character was sister Mary Clarence! 😂

My Nan had a cousin that she always called Clarence, but since doing my family tree I found out that she was actually called Clarise.

Marcipex · 29/07/2019 07:33

I quite like it for a girl though. It’s not as if it’s in use for boys.

onalongsabbatical · 29/07/2019 07:28

Clarice, Clarissa, Cressida. Not Clarence (yes you ARE going mad!) Grin

OtraCosaMariposa · 29/07/2019 07:25

No It's a boys name.

Clemency, Clementine, Clare, Clara etc are girls names.
