Baby #2 is due in October. I already have a son, Stanley.
I'm fussy with names
Nothing in top 50
Nothing with strong R or W sound (clashes with surname)
Not ambiguous to say/spell
Vintage or classic name
Has nickname options.
Middle name will be Elsie

So after a LOT of researching a name came to me out of nowhere. It's very unusual and a vintage girl name. I love it and Husband does. However when I look it up on websites, it seems to be a name people either love, or hate.
So now I'm doubting myself.
Do I just go with the name that feels right, and that meets my criteria and brace myself for a few possibly insensitive/negative comments OR just go back to the drawing board again?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Also Minty doesn't have to be the abbreviation.
Ara , Minta, and Min are all possibilities as shorts.

Sophronia · 24/07/2019 00:53

Elsie Araminta sounds better.

GuiltyPleasure · 24/07/2019 00:52

My friend named her daughter Araminta 20+ years ago. She's always been known as Minty & I think this will be the obvious diminutive. I've always found it a bit Jilly Cooper/ public school/pretentious but it does go well with Stanley IMO & if you like it go with it!

NeckPainChairSearch · 24/07/2019 00:48

I had to dash back to this thread...I went straight from here, to a friend's 'new baby' message. She's called her DD Araminta! Minty for a nn. What a fab coincidence! Grin

Monday55 · 24/07/2019 00:40

the name has the R sound though which you said you didn't like in your original Post. If you would change your name to Araminta by deed poll and feel happy bout it then go ahead and use the name on your child...otherwise please don't, its hideous and it's not a name most will be able to spell outright without your child correcting them for the next 80+ years to come.

NeckPainChairSearch · 24/07/2019 00:36

I don't mind Araminta, but I LOVE Stanley and Winifred (I know a pp beat me to it, mind).

Stanley and Winifred. Winifred Elsie. Yep, love that. Grin

TruffleWuffle · 24/07/2019 00:28

It’s an awful name. If you love it though, don’t tell anyone in advance. It’s easier to “sell” the name when it’s attached to an adorable newborn. Then your family/friends will love the girl and slightly disregard their true thoughts on the name, hopefully

Purplecatshopaholic · 24/07/2019 00:23

So you are going to have Stan and Minty....okaaaay

Mammyloveswine · 24/07/2019 00:22

Ah OP I think if you love it then you should choose it!

If I'm being honest I've never come across the name (and I work in childcare!) but that's no indication. Fwiw I love Elsie!!

What about Arabella, Analise, Annabelle?? I also loved Elodie but not personally with Elsie as a middle name.

Purplecatshopaholic · 24/07/2019 00:20

Exactly Derbee - major snigger

MrsDimmond · 24/07/2019 00:19

It's not to my taste. It sounds like an unnecessarily long name. A bit like Arabella or Petronella. And Minty definitely would be a member of the pony club ...

But, If you like it use it! My dd has a name that divides opinion, but I love it.

Derbee · 24/07/2019 00:15

I think Araminta is very pretty.

It doesn’t go with Stanley though. Araminta is a very upper middle class name. Stanley sounds like a real cockney working class type name.

If you like it, call her Araminta and who cares what anyone thinks. But they don’t go. It’s kind of like calling your kids Sebastian and Tracy

Purplecatshopaholic · 24/07/2019 00:14

Araminta is a lovely name. Stanley is not....

Playmytune · 24/07/2019 00:12

Araminta Elsie...poor child....not much else can be said...except don’t do it!!!

Astronica · 24/07/2019 00:11

What a great name! It's one of those names that I can't believe is not used more often. I assume Araminty is an even rarer version of the same name, and is one I really like especially because of the mother character, Mrs Brown, in National Velvet.

Myotherusernameisshy · 24/07/2019 00:08

I don’t love it or hate it but I am a little confused.

  • you want no r sounds and it has an r sound.
  • the middle name must be Elsie but Araminta Elsie doesnt flow at all well.
  • you have a son with a traditionally very working class name and are choosing a traditionally very upper class name for your daughter. Of course they don’t have to ‘go’ but personally I wouldn’t be comfortable doing that.
  • you want a name that is easy to say and spell. It is neither of these things.
What is it that makes you feel that this name is the one?
campion · 24/07/2019 00:06

Stanley might be trendy in MC circles at the moment but it was solidly WC last time round. Fashions come and go.

Anyway OP, I think Araminta is rather nice and it is an actual name which has been around for a few centuries, unlike some of the made up ones of today.
Middle names are nice to have but not that important in that they're not normally used in everyday situations, so just choose whatever you like for all names.

Frith2013 · 24/07/2019 00:03

Like in the Borrowers.

DramaAlpaca · 24/07/2019 00:00

Araminta is seriously posh, but it's OK. I can't bear Minty though. Nor Elsie, which is a completely different type of name to Araminta.

Multiple similar threads re Araminta.

Wakeupalready · 23/07/2019 23:53

I think it's great. So many options for abbreviations.
It's a pretty name.
Don't like Elsie with it , but Elsa might work instead.
I really wouldn't care if it matches your DS's name because I think you're on a hard road trying to match anything attractive with Stanley - Rhonda is the first thing that comes to my mind for some reason re matching, but that is not a great name.
Go for it. Your child, your choice.

puppy23 · 23/07/2019 23:49

Personally not to my liking, if I were you I'd go for Elsie as a first name instead, like PPs have said it fits nicely with Stanley.

Also would've said Stanley was much more of a MC name than WC- shocked so many think otherwise

floppybit · 23/07/2019 23:42

I used to watch a tv show as a kid and that was the lead characters name, I bloody love it! Love Minty for short too

Pleasebequietnow · 23/07/2019 23:40

I only know it from ‘Moondial’ (and I think the character wasn’t keen on it), but I think it’s pretty.

FurrySlipperBoots · 23/07/2019 23:37

I like it! And while it's 'posh' whereas Stanley is traditionally 'un-posh', only middle class parent call their boys Stanley these days so I think it works! Elsie as a middle name is like wearing shocking pink with red though!

Araminta and Stanley work
Elsie and Stanley work
Araminta Elsie is disastrous

Also, you may already be aware but 'Minnie' is a word commonly used to mean vulva. Just something to be aware of.
