Margaret, Morag or Jean?

soundsystem · 20/07/2019 17:24

Margaret would get shorted to Margot, Greta or Peggy, depending on which best suited her.

Morag would just be Morag. (Though DD1 has suggested she might call her Morag the Toerag)

Jean might become Jeannie.

Give me your thoughts, please!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

CruCru I think you're right, I've been asking friends/colleagues with London accents to say Morag and it's not as nice! It is harsher, more like MoRAG. So it might be being ruled out (Although I've discovered it sounds nice in New Zealand, Italian and Czech accents, and particularly harsh in an East Midlands one!)

One thing I like about these names is that not many children are called them. They will actually identify the child.

Fatkins · 27/07/2019 08:30

I think the problem with all three of these is that your DD will need to be beautiful, cool and somewhat fabulous to carry them off

I totally disagree. And the op lives in East London. You HAVE to be cool there. It is actually the law. Little known legal fact there. You're welcome Grin.

I made the point earlier though, that I'd rather be a pretty wee flowery Morag than a badass tomboy called Ella-Bella-Amelia-Rosabella-Lilliana-Mae or whatever.

Fatkins · 27/07/2019 08:26

Also I really don’t see the point of giving a child a name and then immediately deciding what the nickname will be. Just call her the nickname 🤔

I definitely see the point in a longer name on the BC. Not in all cases, but generally, I definitely prefer names with options. Peggy when she's a baby / among close friends and family, Greta when she's a teenager / at work etc. Margaret for official forms and at her wedding.

I have a name like this. I would have hated having "Peggy" on my BC. It's so much better having options. I also love it when people don't know my full name as they're so used to my shorter version. It's a good conversation starter.

Also, since even a main member of this bonkers country's royal family got called "chavvy" for naming his son Archie, I can 100% see why people would avoid doing similar.

Derbee · 27/07/2019 04:06

I think they’re all pretty bad.

But I cannot believe anybody would consider calling a child Morag. Awful

Tillygetsit · 27/07/2019 00:16

Jeannie is GORGEOUS 😍

OpheliaTodd · 27/07/2019 00:05

They’re all ghastly. Sorry. All old lady-ish with an ugly sound especially Morag.

Also I really don’t see the point of giving a child a name and then immediately deciding what the nickname will be. Just call her the nickname 🤔

CruCru · 27/07/2019 00:00

I like all of them but probably Jean best of all. Morag sounds nice in a Scottish accent but not in a London one (I think).

Jean Charlotte sounds much better than Margaret Charlotte.

feelingverylazytoday · 26/07/2019 17:45

None of them.

GrabbyGertie · 26/07/2019 17:44

I like ALL the names but if you are going to use shortened versions why don’t you just give them as her actual name.

My favourite out of them all would be Jean. It’s a nice name and it’s unusual but not weird. I really like it.

MoistOwlette · 26/07/2019 17:40

Jean/Jeannie
Morag
Peggy

...all lovely and jump out as interesting choices.

HMArsey · 26/07/2019 17:36

I like Jean, but I think the problem with all three of these is that your DD will need to be beautiful, cool and somewhat fabulous to carry them off. They're all names I can imagine on a hefty apprentice nun.

Of course if she does turn out to be beautiful, cool and fabulous then they're amazing.

I love Peggy, but if your child is fat you're asking for trouble. DP and I vetoed it for that reason (as given our genes a porker was likely).

AverageMummy · 26/07/2019 15:00

I’m sorry they all sound horrific to me - less old in a romantic vintage way, more 50 year old woman’s name. I’m just one random internet stranger though.

SummerSeasoning · 26/07/2019 10:06

I have been reading quite a bit about mediaeval history this year and Margaret is beginning to grow on me.

SummerSeasoning · 26/07/2019 10:05

Jean / Jeannie I love.

applepieicecream · 26/07/2019 10:01

Jean is fine, the others are awful

LostInTheColonies · 26/07/2019 00:59

Ah - you're Scottish! I like all of them. What about Morven?

shinynewapple · 26/07/2019 00:34

Some posters have stated that these are 'old lady' names- and whilst both myself snd DH have aunts Jean and Margaret who are now in their 80's, some of the other names mentioned by posters such as Grace, Lily, and Rose are names which to me are a generation older than the Jeans and Margaret's as they were the names of elderly ladies when I was growing up.

It's true names are on a cycle.

Earlybed · 25/07/2019 23:44

Surprised Morag isn't more popular given Katie Morag's been on tv for years? I really like it but (disclaimer) I am Scottish and live in Scotland.

Probably Jeannie for me personally rather than Jean but only because it seems instinctively a bit too 'old' for me for a baby, but they will of course grow up! You could name her Jean but have Jeannie as a nickname? Fabulous Maggie Smith associations with Jean though!

Margaret, etc. great though not Peggy! Puts me in mind of Hi-de-hi...

ladycarlotta · 25/07/2019 23:22

When I was a kid in the 90s I knew sisters called Mary and Margaret nn Molly and Peggy, so perhaps that's why Peggy sounds like a sweet fun kid's name to me. And then there's Peggy Olson, who I think is a brilliant character.

ladycarlotta · 25/07/2019 23:19

OP, you do you! I love all your choices - they sound smart and chic. Love Peggy or Greta for Margaret, Morag is a lovely choice, but Jean totally has my heart. I've met two baby Joans but not a Jean yet.

Lemonchorizo · 23/07/2019 22:33

I am named one of the three options. Grin

Shortenings for Margaret include Mags, Maggie, Megan, Margie, Marge too - unfortunately their friends may decide which one they are called. Just something to consider.

sugarbum · 23/07/2019 11:58

I've never liked Morag - it just sounds a bit harsh to me.

My nan was Margaret. She was called Mags. Again. Harsh. But I like Peggy, Maggie, Meg, Meggie.

I don't mind Jean but I find it a bit blunt. Jeanie/Jeannie or Jeanne are ok (I don't know how you pronounce Jeanne (Jan? Jayanne?) - I like the way it looks on paper though LOL)

Jojobythesea · 23/07/2019 11:55

Jean. Love it. One of my picks

Fatkins · 23/07/2019 11:39

This was Ireland in the 90s fwiw.
