Can I have a Magnus and a Fergus?

NC for this as it's very outing!

I have two sons, Magnus and Hamish, I love both of their names. I am now pregnant again and totally stuck for names.

We love Fergus (we are in Scotland btw, in case anyone is sensing a theme!) but can I have a Magnus and a Fergus? They are so similar sounding.

If not - any ideas for boys or girls names that would 'go' with my other two? I know some people hate matching set names but we've sort of gone down that road already!

Ruairidh, Innes, Callan, Oran, and Torin are my favourite Scottish boys names.

I love love love Alba, and like Mhairi and Eilidh. Quite like Ishbel even if it’s a wee bit old lady!

sandyfoot · 20/07/2019 21:20

Dugald. ❤️

Mhairi ❤️

Some great suggestions here, Kester was on the list for Hamish but literally everyone I mentioned it to hated it!

Flora is definitely on the list and I love Alba, but we are in real Scotland the brave territory with that one I think! I actually love Heather but it's a really common name among my age group (late 30s/early 40s) so I know loads of them.

For boys I have convinced DH to put Duncan and Arran on the list, I met a little Torin today as well and liked that.

I like them all - I really like Scottish names but no I think they're too similar sorry.

Fatkins · 20/07/2019 17:26

Sorry, that isn't a criticism btw. I think Lauren Laverne is quite a cool sleb to share baby names with Smile.

Fatkins · 20/07/2019 17:24

PPS: Lauren Laverne has a Fergus and a Mack! Quite similar to Fergus and Magnus maybe?

Lessstressedhemum · 20/07/2019 13:59

I think they are fine together. All my son's have strong Scottish names.

If you don't want to have Fergus what about
Fionnladh
Innes
Tearlach
Aibne
Andrew

Fatkins · 20/07/2019 13:44

PS: I also call him Gus for short, which I think is also a little marmite 🤔

Fatkins · 20/07/2019 13:07

I have a Fergus and he is fabulous! I get a lot of compliments on it, but when I don't get a compliment, I always am safe assuming the person HATES it 😂. It's a bit marmite I think, which I didn't realise until he was here and named! I am (mainly) Irish and it's a family name, but I also know a few Scottish and even English Ferguses. So I think it's actually quite classic and won't date like all the Alfie / Archie names.

I love Magnus and Hamish too and fwiw and I think Fergus and Magnus are ok together. I far prefer Fergus to Felix although we also considered Felix for our DS. It is lovely too.

I like Ruaridh better than Rory too and think it's fab to have "Scotland the brave" names. You are in Scotland after all!

What about Murdo?

Nellamelia · 19/07/2019 22:39

I like Fergus, I think you can definitely use it, it goes lovely with your other boys. I have two Scottish boys names too and I also love Torquil. Dh vetoed it though for any further children so you may have it ha!

For girls I like Eilish, Flora and Florrie.

GoFiguire · 19/07/2019 22:32

Balonzus

loveandlaughs · 19/07/2019 22:31

I like Duncan and Robbie suggested by pp. Also for a boy like Campbell better than Cameron.

For girls I like

Mhairi
Morven
Catriona
Caireann

Ledehe · 19/07/2019 22:27

Scottish here. Love your boys names. Can I suggest Gregor? Flows nicely with your other boys names and Gs and Rs just sound brilliant in a Scottish accent.

The main problem I find with Scottish girls names is that they are all very popular, especially Island names. Flora was my grannies name and I'd love it if it had a resurgence. I've got a scottish name myself but I very much doubt that will become popular again (it's not senga)

MWestie · 19/07/2019 22:27

Lennox, Oran, Frederick, Jamie, Malcolm, Murray?

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 19/07/2019 22:24

I think it’s doable; if my next baby is a boy then we will be in a similar but not identical dilemma; I’m in Scotland but don’t want to “overdo the tartan” IYSWIM.

I love Magnus, I love Fergus, together...yessssss BUT Feargal rolls better with Magnus and Hamish.

17caterpillars1mouse · 19/07/2019 22:19

I think it's fine but I will suggest Malcolm and Struan

For a girl Elspeth?

IVflytrap · 19/07/2019 22:10

I think Felix goes well.

Brodie
Robert
Keir
Kester
Leith
Finlay
Arran

Lorna
Rowan
Mirren
Morven
Sorcha
Marsaili
Isobel or Ishbel
Skye
Alba (I know a couple of English ones - might be too on the nose in Scotland?)

CallMeRachel · 19/07/2019 21:52

But the op didn't even ask for opinions on the name, you've missed the point of this thread and insulted the ops choice of name.Confused

Courtney555 · 19/07/2019 21:43

I know a Scottish family who had Hamish, Angus, (almost identical to your Magnus) and to keep the Scottish theme, third son was William. I think those three go beautifully.

Girls...not too sure what is typically Scottish? Laura? Fiona?

CrackOn · 19/07/2019 21:39

Well, what would be the point in that @kondokonvert? Presumably op wants people's genuine opinions- if she only wanted to be told it was lovely she'd ask people irl.

FWIW, I see no issue with Fergus and Magnus in terms of similarity, I'd just think that poor Fergus had got the raw end of the deal!

Kaykay06 · 19/07/2019 21:36

Seamus?
Cameron
Fraser
Ross
Alistair

I don’t like fergus sorry but Hamish and magnus are lovely.

Congratulations on your little one and am sure whatever you name them it’ll be lovely CakeFlowers
