There is a mum in my local nursery with a baby same age and name as my son. Potentially they will go to the same schools so forever more will be known as name and initial to differentiate them. It’s annoyed me so much :( neither of us copied each other just unfortunate coincidence. Am I making a fuss about nothing? It really is upsetting me. Can people let me know what they think to give some perspective. Am I right to feel like this or am I being stupid maybe. Thanks

You could have picked a more unusual name if this was something that concerned you. I know lots of Jessicas, not babies, but it is a very popular name.

BarryBarryTaylor · 18/07/2019 08:06

Unless either one of you is going to change your child’s name (which isn’t going to happen!) then there isn’t much you can do about it. Jessica is a very common name

Whoops75 · 18/07/2019 00:19

My dd has 3 Ryan’s in her class , it’s the only place they’re Ryan , A,B & C don’t sweat it.

I gave my dd a v common name and she’s the only one in the class!!
You just never know!

ABitOTT · 18/07/2019 00:12

I shouldn't worry. My DD went to sixth form with two others who were known by the same nickname. Weirdly the proper names were all different. One of the girls even had the same middle initial but none of this bothered my DD. My DS has an immensely popular name & hardly ever comes across another with the same name. Wouldn't bother him if he did & wouldn't bother me. Your child is unique whether they have a popular name & there's a dozen in their class. I grew up with an unusual name & while I love it now, as a child I desperately wanted to be called Tracy, Linda or Alison!

Nonnymum · 17/07/2019 22:53

It's really not that unusual for there to be two or more children with the same name. In a class. Unless your child has a veey unusual name the chances are that at some point in their life they will meet someone else with the same name. It's really not something to get upset about.

DCICarolJordan · 17/07/2019 22:52

Am I being stupid maybe
Yes.

Ginger1982 · 17/07/2019 22:42

When I was at school there were multiple kids called Jennifer, Joanne and David. There's nothing you can do about it so I wouldn't give it any headspace. It's not as if they have the same full name.

boosterrooster · 17/07/2019 21:25

I wouldn't worry, this happens a lot!

I had 2 Lorraine's in my class in school who were best friends & joint at the hip and don't remember there being any major confusion or issues

DPotter · 17/07/2019 20:45

At primary I shared the same first name with 2 others and we all had the same initial for our surnames so spent the whole time known by my full name. Similar in secondary lots of girls with same first names. It happens. Interestingly have never worked with someone of the same first name - all the others seem to have disappeared....!

Soubriquet · 17/07/2019 20:39

There were two Olivia’s in my dd’s class

One ended up being Olivia A and the other was Olivia B

Though obviously the letter was the first name of their surname not actually A and B

I do hope you mean your daughter is called Jessica....I’ve never heard of a boy called it..

QOD · 17/07/2019 20:36

Cool name for a boy. They’ll be unique

Drogosnextwife · 17/07/2019 20:34

Yes, get a grip and move on. My ds2 has this, my parter was in a primary class with 5 other boys with the same name as him, who cares? I can't believe someone would actually claim to be upset by something so ridiculous.

bridgetreilly · 17/07/2019 20:31

It won't do either of your children any harm to know someone else with the same name as them. You are being a bit ridiculous and precious to be upset about this.

devilishlygood · 17/07/2019 19:26

What can you do about it? It’s a waste of energy to spit about it now, both children are named.

Fifthtimelucky · 17/07/2019 14:33

There were 3 Emilys in my daughter's reception class. Emily had been on my shortlist, and I was very pleased we hadn't used it.

In the same class there were 3 Connors.

Frith2013 · 17/07/2019 09:43

My older son has an unusual first name. His 2 friends have the same first name and incredibly similar surnames!

Think Fred Perkins, Fred Perkinson and Fred Larkins.

FenellaMaxwell · 17/07/2019 09:15

To be fair, finding two boys called Jessica is white unusual. Perhaps you could change his name to Amanda or something?

MikeUniformMike · 17/07/2019 09:13

Maybe you could change your baby's name- to Jesse?
If the other baby is a girl, might she have a slightly stronger claim to the name, as it is usually a girl's name.
Could you use a different spelling? Jesseker or something?

feathermucker · 17/07/2019 08:51

You're wrong to be annoyed, but you'll find that it really doesn't matter in the long run.

I was one of 6 in the same class with my name in the 80s (very common name back then)

KnobJockey · 17/07/2019 08:42

We actually had two girls in my secondary school who had the exact same first, middle and last name, and date of birth (boxing day). What are the chances?

Yes you're overreacting, I'm sorry to say. I was one of about 3 Claire's in my primary school class, and very rarely had a class in secondary school where there wasn't another one. It just meant putting Claire S on my work when I was little!

GU24Mum · 17/07/2019 08:37

You can't let it worry you - the girls might not end up at the same school but equally two more Jessicas could move to the area. It's only at school that your DD will be Jessica X.

MrsXx4 · 17/07/2019 08:35

My son is also called Jessica

AJPTaylor · 17/07/2019 08:26

In dds reception year there were 5 Hannah's. I think you need to get a grip tbh.

MrsBertBibby · 17/07/2019 08:21

There's a kid round here who doesn't just have my son's first name (not that common, persistently round the 50th level for the last 20 years) but also shares his surname! Couldn't believe it when Boots told me I had to be super careful checking prescriptions as both boys were on their system.

Caused no end of hilarity with kids turning up to primary and then secondary being completely thrown by getting an unexpected boy for the name.

Unbelievably, when we moved house just before secondary school allocation deadline, the local authority changed both kids' addresses to my new address, so I was getting welcome packs for 2 different schools.

Never met the kid, although I reckon we saw them at a secondary school open day. Too mobbed to get the dad and ask surnames, though.

So, just be glad it's only one name they share!

AverageMummy · 17/07/2019 08:21

Two boys called Jessica???

Anyway yes you’re being silly - you don’t own a name. And children’s names aren’t designer handbags. Your child won’t care.
