Still can’t decide between 2 names...

I’m 32w & having DS2. DS1 is called Noah (we liked it before it became popular).

Debating between Ezra & Asa (pronounced “Acer” like the tree). Middle name will be Michael.

Was pretty much settled on Ezra but I’m fed up of DH saying we’ll go with that because “we can’t come up with anything better!”. Asa has better nn potential (I LOVE Ace) but Ezra possibly sounds better with Michael? Argh I’m fed up of going round & round.

P.s I’ve never understood waiting until you meet baby. If I had done that with DS1 we would have named him Garden Gnome.

Please help!!

If names were never given because of the potential for mispronunciation, we’d all be known by the same handfuls of names!

Risk it! I have a name with so many ways of spelling and pronouncing...it has never irked me once and I’m 40! People actually cover up their embarrassment if they’ve mispronounced by asking me about my name, and there is a nice story behind why my parents chose it...it’s an ice breaker.

I like both names. But you’ll have people screwing their noses up at either or, it’s human nature. If your OH is more into one than the other or you’re in the fence with one, go with the one that you love best!

Ezra because in my accent (Scottish) Asa would/should be pronounced Ace-ah.

userabcname · 09/07/2019 06:45

I prefer Ezra

LadyWithLapdog · 09/07/2019 06:34

Asa is softer sounding and goes better with Noah.

HairyToity · 09/07/2019 06:15

Like both. Met two Asa's. One a romany traveller in his 70s, and another a four year old boy. Pronunciation never been an issue.

Never met an Ezra.

IHeartKingThistle · 08/07/2019 23:53

I prefer Asa but I like Asher more!

Mamabear20 · 08/07/2019 23:51

Ezra is lovely. Xx

Cathyheathcliff · 08/07/2019 23:47

Ezra is much nicer. Asa sounds unfinished Imo

WaxOnFeckOff · 08/07/2019 22:59

Hmm, but the pronunciation is down to accent though isn't it?

In your accent, you would pronounce Asa as Acer however in my accent it's Ay-sa. I'm not wrong and don't need corrected. You aren't wrong either really, it's just pronounced that way in your accent. If you stay living in the same place then you won't have any issue but if you move to a place with a rhotic accent then you'll have no luck telling people to pronounce it Acer, you just won't.

Owlbert · 08/07/2019 22:40

@happytobemrsg that makes sense, I can see why you would want the Hebrew spelling now. I do agree if someone pronounces it incorrectly once they have been corrected the majority will remember.
I would go for it as Asa is lovely and Ace is such a fab nickname!

BackforGood · 08/07/2019 22:24

Not really keen on either of them myself, but I'd go Ezra over Asa because of the pronunciation issue. I've only ever come across one Asa, and it was pronounced 'Ay-za', which is how I think a lot of people would pronounce it.

but if you correct it once people generally get it right??

Well, people that you have told, yes usually but your name gets read out by thousands of people throughout your life, that your Mum won't have had the chance to prime.

clpsmum · 08/07/2019 22:22

Both fab. I absolutely love asa though

Twillow · 08/07/2019 22:17

Both names are nice on their own, but Ezra Michael doesn't trip off the tongue easily to me.

RuthW · 08/07/2019 22:12

Ezra unless you don't mind wrong pronunciations all the time.

skankingpiglet · 08/07/2019 22:12

Ezra is the better choice IMO.
As others have said, you'll forever be correcting the spelling or pronunciation of Asa. I think Ace as a nickname is pretty corny - I'd hazard a guess you're not a Red Dwarf fan...

missmouse101 · 08/07/2019 22:04

Asa much nicer.

flumpybear · 08/07/2019 22:03

Asa- Ezra sounds old fashioned

miamiibiza · 08/07/2019 22:03

Ezra

username1724 · 08/07/2019 22:01

Asa is great, sounds so cool! I work in paediatrics and Ezra is VERY popular right now..

StevieNicksRhiannon · 08/07/2019 21:21

Ezra for the win.

NoCureForLove · 08/07/2019 21:17

Both are nice. Ira is even nicer!

Gummibaersy · 08/07/2019 21:14

Asa

Peachbubble · 08/07/2019 21:05

Ezra

happytobemrsg · 08/07/2019 20:57

@MeanMrMustardSeed that’s usually my thoughts when I see these threads, but if you correct it once people generally get it right??

I agree that would be easier perhaps for pronunciation issues @Owlbert, but the traditional Hebrew spelling is Asa so that’s what we’d go with (DH is Jewish)

I’m genuinely torn (much like this thread 😂)
