Elizabeth.
Hello. We are expecting our 3 child any day now and really stuck with names this time around.
We have a 6 years old called Emily Minnie Harpin and a 4 years old boy called Ben Harpin.
We are expecting a girl and my husband is keen on the name Elizabeth.... I think it’s a bit boring...? He loves Lizzie the character from pride and prejudice, and says that’s it’s just classic and strong... he says it’s so not cool that it’s actually cool 😬😳😂
What do you guys think?
I’m so lost.... I wanted a bit more of a cool/ deferent name as we have very traditional names for the siblings.
Any advice? Suggestions?
Thank you!!!

I'm not keen actually. Prefer Nancy and Annie.
However I do like some of the shortenings:

  • Beth
  • Betsy
  • Betty
  • Ellie
  • Lizzie
  • Eliza
  • Effie
  • Bessie

I'm an Elizabeth known as Lizzie - honestly I think it's the best name! My parents chose it partly because of all the shortenings I could choose from. They called me Elizabeth and it was only when I started speaking I became Lizzie because it was the closest to how I pronounced it myself. I always have a great reaction to my name. Personally I don't Libby/Betsy etc too babyish and Liz just annoys me, otherwise I am happy for people to call me any other shortening.

It's a fun name but it's also strong, has a great meaning, and is not a feminised version of a male name - there's no male version of Elizabeth which is pretty cool.

I do have curly hair and often had the old 'busy, dizzy, frizzy Lizzie' combinations, but it's never bothered me and I'm almost fond of those now. I said to my husband I was sorry we couldn't use Elizabeth if we have a daughter but that would be weird these days!

Do you auavw up against the root growth? I did and it looked horrendous, I've started only shaving down, it doesnt tug and inflame the follicle.. even though you dont get the satin smooth finish it looks slightly better and doesnr look nearly as red.

Try shaving down x

I love it, it’s classic traditional and not try hard or of an era. It’s like Emily, Alice, Charlotte, Hannah etc. Very elegant.

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 01/07/2019 19:36

It's my middle name.

I'm an Alyce Elizabeth and get a fair few compliments on my name.

Saying that my mum cant remember I'd my actual birth certificate is Elizabeth or Elisabeth. She had a flare for mis-spelling so it seems!

CloserIAm2Fine · 01/07/2019 19:35

Elizabeth is my all time favourite name! Especially with Libby as the nickname

Potatopia · 01/07/2019 19:32

My favourite shortening of Elizabeth is Elle.
But will it bother you having 2 Miss E Harpins? Only thinking in terms of post.

teenmum18 · 01/07/2019 18:01

I also like Betsy for a shortened version of Elizabeth

PinkieTuscadero · 01/07/2019 17:58

I've always disliked the name Elizabeth for some reason but it does have good shortenings so that is in its favour. Just to nitpick for a mo, Elizabeth Bennet was actually a Lizzy rather than a Lizzie although she gets referred to as Eliza from time to time too. I also like Beth and Libby.

I love Nancy and think it goes well with your others kids' names.

bridgetreilly · 01/07/2019 17:29

Elizabeth is great. I'd be calling her Beth or Betsy for short, but you have so many options.

SwimmerGirl40 · 01/07/2019 17:27

Just a thought, if you like Alma, what about Aida? We considered it for DD.

Shadow1234 · 01/07/2019 17:16

I prefer Eliza as a stand alone name to Elizabeth.

HeronLanyon · 01/07/2019 16:39

Elizabeth along with Catherine are the ultimate classic lovely names.

TurquoiseAndPurple · 01/07/2019 16:29

Oooh yikes... Really don't like Elizabeth, Betty, Nancy... I'll just go 😂😂😂

CatkinToadflax · 01/07/2019 14:47

It’s awful - too long and formal. I should know! Wink

Fatkins · 01/07/2019 14:26

I have an Emma who was very nearly Elizabeth. Similar reason to your DH liking Lizzie.

I'm glad we went with Emma, as, in hindsight, I realise that I don't actually like the full name Elizabeth at all! I just like the shortenings. I especially love Eliza.

I'd probably still be tempted to use it one day though, if we ever had another girl though. There are just so many lovely shortening options. She'd have so many to pick from when she grows up.

SwimmerGirl40 · 01/07/2019 13:13

I love Arya too, beautiful name but very popular due to GOT and it will date terribly.

DuchessSybilVimes · 01/07/2019 12:47

Matilda is still mega popular which would put me off slightly.
Like Nancy quite a lot, have met a couple of new baby Nancys lately, it may be about to boom in popularity. Alma is ok. Noa just looks like a typo of Noah to me.

I really like Elizabeth.

Elizabeth or Nancy would be my vote!

SwimmerGirl40 · 01/07/2019 12:46

I like Alma ( a good one on the Handmaid’s Tale 😂). It’s quite unusual too. Matilda is lovely.

Rainbowshine · 01/07/2019 12:45

You’ll have two girls with E as an initial, that may be confusing on occasion (speaking from experience of sharing sibling initial).

CrackersDontMatter · 01/07/2019 12:45

I'm expecting a girl and my ds wants to call her Elizabeth. I think in terms of derivatives it's a fantastic name as there are just so many and they are quite diverse. I imagine there's one you could like but I guess the problem is that your husband likes it for Lizzie. Would he compromise on a different shortening?

Lironlavie1 · 01/07/2019 12:43

Thanks everyone. I’m warming up to the name. I like Betty as a short! Didn’t think about that. I also like Nancy...
what do you think about
Alma
Matilda
Anne/ Annie
Noa
?
Or is it better just to go with Elizabeth. I guess it does sound good with Emily and Ben... ahhhhh lost!
