Absolutely hate my 1.5 year olds name

Just that really. Absolutely hate the name we chose for her. We've called her a nickname since she was born (it sounds a bit like "baby" but it's not exactly that) and it's stuck 😳 she responds to that nickname and has absolutely no idea what her real name is.

Sometimes our family do call her by her real name and it makes my skin crawl I hate it so much.

What am I gonna do 😳

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I know an adult polly and a teen polly. Both very cool.

00100001 · 26/06/2019 20:09

Oh. Yes. Whoops. My mistake Blush

EleanorOalike · 26/06/2019 20:09

The name Bibi is a real name and sounds like Baby. Could you rename her that if you can’t get used to Polly?

AllTheGlitter · 26/06/2019 20:05

Just change it while she’s still young

Isitme13 · 26/06/2019 20:05

Is there a chance you’ll come to like it again/she’ll grow into it?

I love my dd1’s name, but it was just too ‘big’ for her as a baby. We used a nickname (not a shortening or derivative in any way, a completely different name!) for ages, so much so that she had no idea what her name was until she was about 4 Blush

When she was 2ish, I had a serious discussion with her dad about changing her name, as I really couldn’t ever see me using it - it just didn’t ‘fit’ at all.

I didn’t, and instead made an effort to use her name more (which at least stopped confusing everyone at TumbleTots, as she had always had one name on her name sticker, and been called another name Confused Grin), and she did gradually grow into it (helped by the fact that dd2 had started talking, couldn’t pronounce dd1’s name, and so a shortening became her everyday name)

Dd1 is 15 now, and uses her full name. I’m really glad I didn’t change it officially, it suits her and I can’t imagine her being called anything else now - not even the nickname we used for years!

If you really can’t see yourself ever liking it again, then change it. Life is too short to dislike something so important.

In what world does Polly sound like baby??

The OP said that the nickname that they use instead of Polly sounds like baby, didn’t she?

twinsrunmylife · 26/06/2019 20:03

@00100001 I think she means the name they call her sounds like baby

simplekindoflife · 26/06/2019 20:03

If you really hate it, change it! There's still time and she's still very young. Or has she got a middle name? Could you use that? Is the nn a real name? Just stick to that if so.

00100001 · 26/06/2019 20:02

In what world does Polly sound like baby?? Confused

koolaider · 26/06/2019 20:01

Polly is a lovely name.

Feelingwalkedover · 26/06/2019 20:00

Change it to dolly

user1494670108 · 26/06/2019 19:57

I have a teenage Polly and we both like it not helpful I'm so glad that the replies have been positive.
Use her middle name if you can't get over it

RefreshifyMe · 26/06/2019 19:53

Change it, but are you sure you don't have PND as that's often the case in here when people worry about names.

carmenbea · 26/06/2019 19:48

I love the name Polly x

ThanosSavedMe · 26/06/2019 19:46

Fab name but I know that’s not helpful. Sorry

Carpetburns · 26/06/2019 19:44

Polly is a gorgeous name! Own it OP! You made a great choice and Polly sounds like the name of a happy little girl

pumpernickledawnings · 26/06/2019 19:38

I LOVE Polly, it was my grandmother’s name.

But if you don’t like it, fair enough.

Laura221 · 26/06/2019 19:37

You just need to use it. Itll grow on you. It's not an awful name at all!

Marcipex · 26/06/2019 19:37

Polly is lovely.
I know a child who was always called Booboo at home. She answers to her given name at school though and it hasn’t caused any issues.

KondoKonvert · 26/06/2019 19:37

I struggled with my DD's name. It's a nice enough name, literally nothing wrong with it, but it just didn't suit her. I called her by a nickname until she started nursery at 3. I still use her nn at home but no longer cringe when I say her full name now she's at school.

She's never struggled between the nn and her full name.

Surfingtheweb · 26/06/2019 19:33

Start using it all the time, you'll get used to it. There used to be a name that absolutely made my skin crawl, I'm now married to someone with that name 😂

OrchidFlakes · 26/06/2019 19:31

Aww polly is gorgeous. I love it. Could you extend it to Pollyanna to give you the option of using Anne/Annie/Anna or possibly even Lana?

Mainlandeurope · 26/06/2019 19:30

Yes do it now if you hate it that much before it's too late. Doesn't matter whether we like Polly or not it's how you feel. How does your family feel?

Ilovemylabrador · 26/06/2019 19:26

Name change by deed poll with a solicitor ASAP ! Then change it at GP, nursery and passport etc job done. Choose a name you love really love. Make sure people call her by her new name - no harm done I promise!

NellysKnickers · 26/06/2019 19:25

Aw, Polly is lovely. Sorry no useful advice!
