Absolutely hate my 1.5 year olds name

Just that really. Absolutely hate the name we chose for her. We've called her a nickname since she was born (it sounds a bit like "baby" but it's not exactly that) and it's stuck 😳 she responds to that nickname and has absolutely no idea what her real name is.

Sometimes our family do call her by her real name and it makes my skin crawl I hate it so much.

What am I gonna do 😳

Change it x

SavoyCabbage · 26/06/2019 22:36

I think changing it is the way to go. Not that there is anything at all wrong with Polly, it’s a perfectly nice name.

Then you can spin the story that she was always known as whatever it is so you decided to change her name to BiBi or something else and never mention to anyone or to dd that you changed it because you didn’t like it.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 26/06/2019 22:36

It's a strong love or hate name. Bit like Sally. If you've been using a nickname anyway then change it! It's not ideal but I do know someone who adopted a child and had his name changed and he was 3 years old and has grown into it now he's 8.

SamBaileys · 26/06/2019 22:32

What would you change it to?

AverageMummy · 26/06/2019 22:26

Polly is such a brilliant name.

Did you suffer PND? I know it can be linked to fixing on hating a name & if it started a couple of weeks post birth....??

Could you use her middle name? Or find a different nickname you love? Pixie? Posey? Lee even?

Orlandointhewilderness · 26/06/2019 21:42

Oh I love Polly! But you can change it you know! What does your DH think?

ConfCall · 26/06/2019 21:33

Polly is a classy name. But if you loathe it, change it. It’s irrelevant that we all seem to like it.

AquaPris · 26/06/2019 21:28

Change to molly so it's similar?

BentBaastard · 26/06/2019 21:27

I love it.

I really do.

Kanga83 · 26/06/2019 21:25

I love Polly, it will suit a child, adult, old lady. I know a couple of children that are known by their middle names- would that be an option?

teenmum18 · 26/06/2019 21:18

I hated DD's name so much when she was a baby that I refused to say it Confused I called her baby for 18m then one day just started calling her her actual name. I love it now 17 years on. Names grow on you and I can't imagine her being called nothing else.

GinUnicorn · 26/06/2019 20:55

Does she have a middle name you could use?

Or could you make a nickname from Polly? Lea? Or Lee? Maybe Pia (thinking outside the box here!)

DogHasEatenTheSqueaker · 26/06/2019 20:42

I am very ahem, biased, about that name, and have significant experience of its day-to-day use...

It’s always always always ‘Pol’. Polly is the ‘shit I’m in trouble’ version. ‘Tis a good name though.

nothingtowearever · 26/06/2019 20:39

Polly is such a lovely name!

DoctorDread · 26/06/2019 20:34

I was going to say Bibi - very cute name!

noodlenosefraggle · 26/06/2019 20:31

Polly is lovely. What would you change it to if you could? What about Molly? Or just use her middle name as PP have said.

DharmaInitiativeLady · 26/06/2019 20:31

I LOVE the name Polly, it's beautiful! Don't change it, start calling her by her name and it will grow on you

Bluerussian · 26/06/2019 20:28

Nothing wrong with Polly, it's a good name. Get used to it, op, and don't let your daughter know you don't like it, it will make her self conscious.

TheRedFox · 26/06/2019 20:24

Love the name Polly!

CassandraCross · 26/06/2019 20:23

Polly is a nice name on it's own but often used as a short form/nickname for Dorothy or Mary apparently.

Is there a middle name you could use? It's not unusual for people to use middle names in preference to first names.

Can you pin point why and when you started to vehemently dislike the name?

What name would you rather have for your daughter?

If the name is causing you this much distress then change it but be absolutely sure before you do change it that you will not equally regret the new name you have chosen.

TatianaLarina · 26/06/2019 20:23

Polly is a great name! Love it.

I know two very beautiful cool adult Pollys.

pictish · 26/06/2019 20:20

No no...you are wrong! Polly is a fabulous name and was very nearly my daughter’s. We love the epic and tremendous Dillard and Clark song of the same name. It was between two and in the end the other name won out...but it wasn’t an easy choice.
Keep it. Oh please do!

InsertFunnyUsername · 26/06/2019 20:16

Its probably because you use a nickname, now can't imagine her with her original name. I would start using Polly (Love btw) and you might start liking it again.

rackhampearl · 26/06/2019 20:16

Love the name Polly! But I know how you feel. My DD was named Rosa for an entire year and I couldn't deal with it. I was just calling her 'the baby's we changed it to our original choice a week before her 1st birthday.

BoronationStreet · 26/06/2019 20:13

I love the name Polly! What a shame that you don't use it.
