I don't love the name we finally chose

My son is 2 weeks old. I've had a couple of threads on here and with everyones help, we finally announced the name on Sunday to everyone - Micah.

But... I'm just not feeling it. It's a lovely name but I'm struggling to accept that its his name, if that makes sense?

What makes it worse is my great-auntie visited yesterday with a beautiful cross stitch picture that she has made with all of our names on, and was waiting for us to announce the name so she can add it. I'd feel terrible if we decided to change the name.

Micah is lovely but I have two things to say really:
1: If you don’t like it, change it - it really isn’t as huge a deal as it feels - I did it with my baby & am relieved I did
2: Name regret can be highly associated with PND as something to focus on - so it’s worth really thinking about how you’re feeling & doing generally

But I think you weren’t ever sure on your name choices so if you need to change it - change it !

It sometimes takes a while for a name to bed in. If it was your preferred name, then that’s the best option you have!

I love it!

I think sometimes it takes a while to adjust. We had a pet name that we called my daughter while I was pregnant, and once she was out it took me a while to adjust to calling her by her real name instead of the pet name.

I love both our children’s names but struggled to say them for a few weeks. I also know someone who just called her baby “baby” for 9 months. She also loved her daughter’s name it just felt odd to her attached to a baby.

Honestly I think all names seem ridiculous on babies for a while. They grow into them.

Deadringer · 26/06/2019 09:32

Oooh I love it! They do grow into their name. I didn't pick the names of my youngest two and I actively disliked one of their names, (bit of a stripper name) but I have got used to it and now it's part of who she is. (She is not a stripper)

Matleavemadam · 26/06/2019 09:25

I think its a lovely name, its sounds both soft and strong. It took me about 6 months to get used to my baby's name.

Some names don't work as well on babies as they will for the rest of their life. In the end I let DH use a family name he was desperate for, I really struggled with how much it didn't suit a teeny baby (traditional D Scottish name). But then we shortened it (kids TV show) and it 100% suits him as he's turned into a sturdy toddler and I wouldn't change it for the world now.

Micah is a lovely name. It might seem a little unusual now but it might just be a name he needs to grow into a little.

Oh I remember your thread.
Wasn’t your dad Michael and it was meant to be a nod to that? Or am I thinking of someone else...
Children do grow into their name but you have to like it.

LittleKitty1985 · 26/06/2019 06:23

He'll grow into his name. Of course it feels odd to you now, he's only 2 weeks old, you don't even know him yet. Try using his name a lot and explaining to him why you chose that name for him and how much you like it.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 26/06/2019 06:04

Tell your great auntie to wait.

The trouble is yours and your dp tastes are very different in names so someone, probably both of you, will have to compromise.

Micah is fine. But i preferred Otto/Otis!

Keep looking if you haven’t found the one yet.

dalmatianmad · 26/06/2019 05:37

How do you pronounce it?

Congratulations Flowers

FixItUpChappie · 26/06/2019 05:23

Probably won't help but it's a lovely and not overused name but of course you can change it if you feel you must. Congrats though Brew
